Al-Balad (#90)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ lā uqsimu bihādhal balad I swear by this town,
2
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ wa-anta ḥillun bihādhal balad as you reside in this town;
3
وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ wawālidin wa mā walad [and] by the father and him whom he begot:
4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ laqad khalaqnal-insāna fī kabad certainly We created man in travail.
5
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ayaḥsabu an lan yaqdira `alayhi aḥad Does he suppose that no one will ever have power over him?
6
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا yaqūlu ahlaktu mālal lubadā He says, ‘I have squandered immense wealth.’
7
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ayaḥsabu an lam yarahu aḥad Does he suppose that no one sees him?
8
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ alam naj`al lahu `aynayn Have We not made for him two eyes,
9
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ walisānan washafatayn a tongue, and two lips,
10
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ wahadaynāhun najdayn and shown him the two paths [of good and evil]?
11
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ falaq-taḥamal `aqabah Yet he has not embarked upon the uphill task.
12
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ wa mā adrāka mal `aqabah And what will show you what is the uphill task?
13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ fakku raqabah [It is] the freeing of a slave,
14
أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ aw iṭ`āmun fī yawmin dhī masghabah or feeding, during days of [general] starvation,
15
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ yatīman dhā maqrabah an orphan among relatives
16
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ aw miskīnan dhā matrabah or a needy man in desolation,
17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ thumma kāna minal ladhīna āmanū watawāṣaw biṣ ṣabri watawāṣaw bil marḥamah while being one of those who have faith and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to compassion.
18
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ulā-ika aṣ-ḥābul maymanah They are the People of the Right Hand.
19
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ wal ladhīna kafarū bi-āyātinā hum aṣ-ḥābul mash-amah But those who defy Our signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.
20
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ `alayhim nārun mu-ṣadah A closed Fire will be [imposed] upon them.
