Al-Fajr (#89)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
وَٱلْفَجْرِ wal fajr By the Dawn,
2
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ walayālin `ashr by the ten nights,
3
وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ wash shaf`i wal watr by the Even and the Odd,
4
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ wal layli idhā yasr by the night when it departs!
5
هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ hal fī dhālika qasamul lidhī ḥijr Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect?
6
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ alam tara kayfa fa`ala rabbuka bi`ād Have you not regarded how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ‘Ad,
7
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ irama dhātil `imād [and] Iram, [the city] of the pillars,
8
ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ allatī lam yukhlaq mithluhā fil bilād the like of which was not created among cities,
9
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ wathamūdal ladhīna jābuṣ ṣakhra bil wād and [the people of] Thamud, who hollowed out the rocks in the valley,
10
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ wafir`awna dhil-awtād and Pharaoh, the impaler
11
ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ alladhīna ṭaghaw fil bilād —those who rebelled [against Allah] in their cities
12
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ fa-aktharū fīhal fasād and caused much corruption in them,
13
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ faṣabba `alayhim rabbuka sawṭa `adhāb so your Lord poured on them lashes of punishment.
14
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ inna rabbaka labil mirṣād Indeed your Lord is in ambush.
15
فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ fa-ammal-insānu idhā mab-talāhu rabbuhu fa-akramahu wana``amahu fayaqūlu rabbī akraman As for man, whenever his Lord tests him, and grants him honour, and blesses him, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me.’
16
وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ wa-ammā idhā mab-talāhu faqadara `alayhi rizqahu fayaqūlu rabbī ahānan But when He tests him and tightens for him his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’
17
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ kallā ۖ bal lā tukrimūnal yatīm No indeed! No, you do not honour the orphan,
18
وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ walā taḥāḍḍūna `alā ṭa`āmil miskīn and do not urge the feeding of the needy.
19
وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا wata-kulūnat turātha aklal lammā You eat the inheritance rapaciously,
20
وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا watuḥibbūnal māla ḥubban jammā and love wealth with much fondness.
21
كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا kallā idhā dukkatil-arḍu dakkan dakkā No indeed! When the earth is levelled to a plain,
22
وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا wajā-a rabbuka wal malaku ṣaffan ṣaffā and your Lord [’s edict] arrives with the angels in ranks,
23
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ wajī-a yawma-idhin bijahannam ۚ yawma-idhiy yatadhakkarul-insānu wa-annā lahudh dhikrā the day when hell is brought [near], man will take admonition on that day, but what will that admonition avail him?
24
يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى yaqūlu yālaytanī qaddamtu liḥayātī He will say, ‘Alas, had I sent ahead for my life [in the Hereafter]!’
25
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ fayawma-idhin lā yu`adhhibu `adhābahu aḥad On that day none shall punish as He punishes,
26
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ walā yūthiqu wathāqahu aḥad and none shall bind as He binds.
27
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ yā-ayyatuhan nafsul muṭma-innah ‘O soul at peace!
28
ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً irji`ī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyah Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing!
29
فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى fadkhulī fī `ibādī Then enter among My servants,
30
وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى wadkhulī jannatī and enter My paradise!’
