Al-Insan (#76)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ حِينٌ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْـًٔا مَّذْكُورًا hal atā `alal-insāni ḥīnun minad dahri lam yakun shay-an madhkūrā Has there been a period of time for man when he was not anything worthy of mention?
2
إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا innā khalaqnal-insāna min nuṭfatin amshājin nabtalīhi faja`alnāhu samī`an baṣīrā Indeed We created man from the drop of a mixed fluid so that We may put him to test, so We endowed with hearing and sight.
3
إِنَّا هَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا innā hadaynāhus sabīla immā shākiran wa immā kafūrā Indeed We have guided him to the way, be he grateful or ungrateful.
4
إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ سَلَـٰسِلَا۟ وَأَغْلَـٰلًا وَسَعِيرًا innā a`tadnā lilkāfirīna salāsila wa-aghlālan wasa`īrā Indeed for the faithless We have prepared chains, iron collars, and a blaze.
5
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا innal-abrāra yashrabūna min ka-sin kāna mizājuhā kāfūrā Indeed the pious will drink from a cup seasoned with Kafur,
6
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًا `aynan yashrabu bihā `ibādullāhi yufajjirūnahā tafjīrā a spring where Allah’s servants will drink, making it gush forth as they please.
7
يُوفُونَ بِٱلنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُۥ مُسْتَطِيرًا yūfūna bin nadhri wayakhāfūna yawman kāna sharruhu mustaṭīrā They fulfill their vows and fear a day whose ill will be widespread.
8
وَيُطْعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا wayuṭ`imūnaṭ ṭa`āma `alā ḥubbihi miskīnan wayatīman wa-asīrā For the love of Him, they feed the needy, the orphan and the prisoner,
9
إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ ٱللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَآءً وَلَا شُكُورًا innamā nuṭ`imukum liwajhillāhi lā nurīdu minkum jazā-an walā shukūrā [saying,] ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We desire no reward from you, nor thanks.
10
إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًا innā nakhāfu min rabbinā yawman `abūsan qamṭarīrā Indeed we fear a frowning and fateful day from our Lord.’
11
فَوَقَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّىٰهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا fawaqāhumullāhu sharra dhālikal yawmi walaqqāhum naḍratan wasurūrā So Allah saved them from that day’s ills and graced them with freshness [on this faces] and joy [in their hearts].
12
وَجَزَىٰهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا wajazāhum bimā ṣabarū jannatan waḥarīrā He rewarded them for their patience with a garden and [garments of] silk,
13
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ ۖ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا muttaki-īna fīhā `alal-arā-ik ۖ lā yarawna fīhā shamsan walā zamharīrā reclining therein on couches, without facing any [scorching] sun, or [biting] cold.
14
وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَـٰلُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًا wadāniyatan `alayhim ẓilāluhā wadhullilat quṭūfuhā tadhlīlā Its shades will be close over them and its clusters [of fruits] will be hanging low.
15
وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِـَٔانِيَةٍ مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا۠ wayuṭāfu `alayhim bi-āniyatim min fiḍḍatin wa-akwābin kānat qawārīrā They will be served around with vessels of silver and goblets of crystal
16
قَوَارِيرَا۟ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا qawārīra min fiḍḍatin qaddarūhā taqdīrā —crystal of silver— [from] which they will dispense in a precise measure.
17
وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنجَبِيلًا wayusqawna fīhā ka-san kāna mizājuhā zanjabīlā They will be served therein with a cup of a drink seasoned with Zanjabeel,
18
عَيْنًا فِيهَا تُسَمَّىٰ سَلْسَبِيلًا `aynan fīhā tusammā salsabīlā from a spring in it named Salsabeel.
19
وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ حَسِبْتَهُمْ لُؤْلُؤًا مَّنثُورًا wayaṭūfu `alayhim wildānun mukhalladūna idhā ra-aytahum ḥasibtahum lu-lu-an manthūrā They will be waited upon by immortal youths, whom, were you to see them, you will suppose them to be scattered pearls.
20
وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًا wa idhā ra-ayta thamma ra-ayta na`īman wa mulkan kabīrā As you look on, you will see there bliss and a great kingdom.
21
عَـٰلِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ ۖ وَحُلُّوٓا۟ أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ وَسَقَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُورًا `āliyahum thiyābu sundusin khuḍrun wa istabraq ۖ waḥullū asāwira min fiḍḍatin wasaqāhum rabbuhum sharāban ṭahūrā Upon them will be cloaks of green silk and brocade and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver. Their Lord will give them to drink a pure drink.
22
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَآءً وَكَانَ سَعْيُكُم مَّشْكُورًا inna hādhā kāna lakum jazā-an wakāna sa`yukum mashkūrā [They will be told]: ‘This is your reward, and your efforts have been well-appreciated.’
23
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَنزِيلًا innā naḥnu nazzalnā `alaykal qur-āna tanzīlā Indeed We have sent down to you the Quran in a gradual descent.
24
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ ءَاثِمًا أَوْ كَفُورًا faṣbir liḥukmi rabbika walā tuṭi` minhum āthiman aw kafūrā So submit patiently to the judgement of your Lord and do not obey any sinner or ingrate from among them,
25
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا wadhkuris-ma rabbika bukratan wa-aṣīlā and celebrate the Name of your Lord morning and evening,
26
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَٱسْجُدْ لَهُۥ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا wa minal layli fasjud lahu wasabbiḥ-hu laylan ṭawīlā and worship Him for a watch of the night and glorify Him the night long.
27
إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ يُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَآءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا inna hā-ulā-i yuḥibbūnal `ājilata wayadharūna warā-ahum yawman thaqīlā Indeed they love this transitory life, and disregard a heavy day that is ahead of them.
28
نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَآ أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَآ أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًا naḥnu khalaqnāhum washadadnā asrahum ۖ wa idhā shi-nā baddalnā amthālahum tabdīlā We created them and strengthened their joints, and We will replace them with others like them whenever We like.
29
إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا inna hādhihi tadhkirah ۖ faman shā-at-takhadha ilā rabbihi sabīlā This is indeed a reminder. So let anyone who wishes take the way toward his Lord.
30
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا wa mā tashā-ūna illā an yashā-allāh ۚ innallāha kāna `alīman ḥakīmā But you will not wish unless it is willed by Allah. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
31
يُدْخِلُ مَن يَشَآءُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ وَٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًۢا yudkhilu man yashā-u fī raḥmatih ۚ waẓ ẓālimīna a`adda lahum `adhāban alīmā He admits whomever He wishes into His mercy, and He has prepared a painful punishment for the wrongdoers.
