Al-Muddaththir (#74)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ yā-ayyuhal muddathhir O you wrapped up in your mantle!
2
قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ qum fa-andhir Rise up and warn!
3
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ warabbaka fakabbir Magnify your Lord,
4
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ wathiyābaka faṭahhir and purify your clothes,
5
وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ war rujza fahjur and keep away from all impurity!
6
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ walā tamnun tastakthir Do not grant a favour seeking a greater gain,
7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ walirabbika faṣbir and be patient for the sake of your Lord.
8
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ fa-idhā nuqira fin nāqūr When the Trumpet will be sounded,
9
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ fadhālika yawma-idhiy yawmun `asīr that will be a day of hardship,
10
عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ `alal-kāfirīna ghayru yasīr not at all easy for the faithless.
11
ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا dharnī wa man khalaqtu waḥīdā Leave Me [to deal] with him whom I created alone,
12
وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا waja`altu lahu mālan mamdūdā and furnished him with extensive means,
13
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا wabanīna shuhūdā [gave him] sons to be at his side,
14
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا wa mahhadtu lahu tamhīdā and facilitated [all matters] for him.
15
ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ thumma yaṭma`u an azīd Still he is eager that I should give him more.
16
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا kallā ۖ innahu kāna li-āyātinā `anīdā No indeed! He is an obstinate opponent of Our signs.
17
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا sa-urhiquhu ṣa`ūdā Soon I will overwhelm him with hardship.
18
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ innahu fakkara waqaddar Indeed he reflected and decided.
19
فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ faqutila kayfa qaddar Perish he, how he decided!
20
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ thumma qutila kayfa qaddar Again, perish he, how he decided!
21
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ thumma naẓar Then he looked;
22
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ thumma `abasa wabasar then frowned and scowled.
23
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ thumma adbara wastakbar Then he walked away disdainfully,
24
فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ faqāla in hādhā illā siḥrun yu-thar saying, ‘It is nothing but traditional sorcery.
25
إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ in hādhā illā qawlul bashar It is nothing but the speech of a human.’
26
سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ sa-uṣlīhi saqar Soon I will cast him into Saqar.
27
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ wa mā adrāka mā saqar And what will show you what is Saqar?
28
لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ lā tubqī walā tadhar It neither spares, nor leaves [anything].
29
لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ lawwāḥatun lilbashar It burns the skin.
30
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ `alayhā tis`ata `ashar There are nineteen [keepers] over it.
31
وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ wa mā ja`alnā aṣ-ḥāban nāri illā malā-ikatan wa mā ja`alnā `iddatahum illā fitnatan lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqinal ladhīna ūtul kitāba wayazdādal ladhīna āmanū-iymānan walā yartābal ladhīna ūtul kitāba wal mu-minūna waliyaqūlal ladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wal kāfirūna mādhā arādallāhu bihādhā mathalā ۚ kadhālika yuḍillullāhu man yashā-u wayahdī man yashā-u ۚ wa mā ya`lamu junūda rabbika illā huw ۚ wa mā hiya illā dhikrā lilbashar We have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and so that those who were given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and so that those who were given the Book and the faithful may not be in doubt, and so that the faithless and those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, ‘What did Allah mean by this description?’ Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans.
32
كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ kallā wal qamar No indeed! By the Moon!
33
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ wal layli idh adbar By the night when it recedes!
34
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ waṣ ṣubḥi idhā asfar By the dawn when it brightens!
35
إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ innahā la-iḥdal kubar Indeed they are one of the greatest [signs of God]
36
نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ nadhīral lilbashar —a warner to all humans,
37
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ liman shā-a minkum an yataqaddama aw yata-akhhar [alike] for those of you who like to advance ahead and those who would remain behind.
38
كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ kullu nafsin bimā kasabat rahīnah Every soul is hostage to what it has earned,
39
إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ illā aṣ-ḥābal yamīn except the People of the Right Hand.
40
فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ fī jannātiy yatasā-alūn [They will be] in gardens, questioning
41
عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ `anil mujrimīn the guilty:
42
مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ mā salakakum fī saqar ‘What drew you into Hell?’
43
قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ qālū lam naku minal muṣallīn They will answer, ‘We were not among those who prayed.
44
وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ walam naku nuṭ`imul miskīn Nor did we feed the poor.
45
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ wakunnā nakhūḍu ma`al khā-iḍīn We used to indulge in [profane] gossip along with the gossipers,
46
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ wakunnā nukadhhibu biyawmid dīn and we used to deny the Day of Retribution
47
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ ḥattā atānal yaqīn until death came to us.’
48
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ famā tanfa`uhum shafā`atush shhāfi`īn So the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them.
49
فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ famā lahum `anit tadhkirati mu`riḍīn What is the matter with them that they evade the Reminder
50
كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ ka-annahum ḥumurun mustanfirah as if they were terrified asses
51
فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ farrat min qaswarah fleeing from a lion?
52
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً bal yurīdu kullum-ri-in minhum an yu-tā ṣuḥufan munashharah But everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures [from Allah]!
53
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ kallā ۖ bal lā yakhāfūnal-ākhirah No! Indeed, they do not fear the Hereafter.
54
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ kallā innahu tadhkirah No! It is indeed a reminder.
55
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ faman shā-a dhakarah So let anyone who wishes be mindful of it.
56
وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ wa mā yadhkurūna illā an yashā-allāh ۚ huwa ahlut taqwā wa-ahlul maghfirah And they will not be mindful unless Allah wishes. He is worthy of [your] being wary [of Him] and He is worthy to forgive.
