بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ yā-ayyuhal muzzammil O you wrapped up in your mantle!
2
قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا qumil layla illā qalīlā Stand vigil through the night, except for a little [of it],
3
نِّصْفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا niṣfahu awin-quṣ minhu qalīlā a half, or reduce a little from that
4
أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا aw zid `alayhi warattilil qur-āna tartīlā or add to it, and recite the Quran in a measured tone.
5
إِنَّا سَنُلْقِى عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا innā sanulqī `alayka qawlan thaqīlā Indeed soon We shall cast on you a weighty discourse.
6
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ هِىَ أَشَدُّ وَطْـًٔا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا inna nāshi-atal layli hiya ashaddu waṭ-an wa-aqwamu qīlā Indeed the watch of the night is firmer in tread and more upright in respect to speech,
7
إِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا inna laka fin nahāri sabḥan ṭawīlā for indeed during the day you have drawn-out engagements.
8
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا wadhkuris-ma rabbika watabattal ilayhi tabtīlā So celebrate the Name of your Lord and dedicate yourself to Him with total dedication.
9
رَّبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا rabbul mashriqi wal maghribi lā ilāha illā huwa fattakhidh-hu wakīlā Lord of the east and the west, there is no god except Him; so take Him for your trustee,
10
وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا waṣbir `alā mā yaqūlūna wāhjurhum hajran jamīlā and be patient over what they say, and distance yourself from them in a graceful manner.
11
وَذَرْنِى وَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُو۟لِى ٱلنَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا wadharnī wal mukadhhibīna ulin na`mati wa mahhilhum qalīlā Leave Me [to deal] with the deniers, the opulent, and give them a little respite.
12
إِنَّ لَدَيْنَآ أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا inna ladaynā ankālan wajaḥīmā Indeed with Us are heavy fetters and a fierce fire,
13
وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا waṭa`āman dhā ghuṣṣatin wa`adhāban alīmā and a food that chokes [those who eat it], and a painful punishment [prepared for]
14
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا yawma tarjuful-arḍu wal jibālu wakānatil jibālu kathīban mahīlā the day when the earth and the mountains will quake, and the mountains will be like dunes of shifting sand.
15
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَـٰهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا innā arsalnā ilaykum rasūlan shāhidan `alaykum kamā arsalnā ilā fir`awna rasūlā Indeed We have sent to you an apostle, to be a witness to you, just as We sent an apostle to Pharaoh.
16
فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا fa`aṣā fir`awnur rasūla fa-akhadhnāhu akhdhan wabīlā But Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a terrible seizing.
17
فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَ شِيبًا fakayfa tattaqūna in kafartum yawman yaj`alul wildāna shībā So, if you disbelieve, how will you avoid the day, which will make children white-headed,
18
ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرٌۢ بِهِۦ ۚ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَفْعُولًا as-samā-u munfaṭirun bih ۚ kāna wa`duhu maf`ūlā and wherein the sky will be rent apart? His promise is bound to be fulfilled.
19
إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا inna hādhihi tadhkirah ۖ faman shā-at-takhadha ilā rabbihi sabīlā This is indeed a reminder. So let anyone who wishes take the way toward his Lord.
20
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَىِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةٌ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۚ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا ۚ وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌۢ inna rabbaka ya`lamu annaka taqūmu adnā min thuluthayil layli waniṣfahu wathuluthahu waṭā-ifatun minal ladhīna ma`ak ۚ wallāhu yuqaddirul layla wan nahār ۚ `alima an lan tuḥṣūhu fatāba `alaykum ۖ faqra-ū mā tayassara minal qur-ān ۚ `alima an sayakūnu minkum marḍā wa-ākharūna yaḍribūna fil-arḍi yabtaghūna min faḍlillāhi wa-ākharūna yuqātilūna fī sabīlillāh ۖ faqra-ū mā tayassara minh ۚ wa-aqīmuṣ ṣalāta wa-ātuz zakāta wa-aqriḍullāha qarḍan ḥasanā ۚ wa mā tuqaddimū li-anfusikum min khayrin tajidūhu `indallāhi huwa khayran wa-a`ẓama ajrā ۚ wastaghfirullāh ۖ innallāha ghafūrun raḥīm Indeed your Lord knows that you stand vigil for nearly two thirds of the night—or [at times] a half or a third of it—along with a group of those who are with you. Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you cannot calculate it [exactly], and so He was lenient toward you. So recite as much of the Quran as is feasible. He knows that some of you will be sick, while others will travel in the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and yet others will fight in the way of Allah. So recite as much of it as is feasible, and maintain the prayer and pay the zakat and lend Allah a good loan. Whatever good you send ahead for your souls you will find it with Allah [in a form] that is better and greater with respect to reward. And plead to Allah for forgiveness; indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
