بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ wan najmi idhā hawā By the star when it sets:
2
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ mā ḍalla ṣāḥibukum wa mā ghawā your companion has neither gone astray, nor amiss.
3
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ wa mā yanṭiqu `anil hawā Nor does he speak out of [his own] desire:
4
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ in huwa illā waḥyun yūḥā it is just a revelation that is revealed [to him],
5
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ `allamahu shadīdul quwā taught him by one of great powers,
6
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ dhū mirratin fastawā possessed of sound judgement. He settled,
7
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ wahuwa bil-ufuqil-a`lā while he was on the highest horizon.
8
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ thumma danā fatadallā Then he drew nearer and nearer
9
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ fakāna qāba qawsayni aw adnā until he was within two bows’ length or even nearer,
10
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ fa-awḥā ilā `abdihi mā awḥā whereat He revealed to His servant whatever He revealed.
11
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ mā kadhabal fu-ādu mā ra-ā The heart did not deny what it saw.
12
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ afatumārūnahu `alā mā yarā Will you then dispute with him about what he saw?!
13
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ walaqad ra-āhu nazlatan ukhrā Certainly he saw it yet another time,
14
عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ `inda sidratil muntahā by the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary,
15
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ `indahā jannatul ma-wā near which is the Garden of the Abode,
16
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ idh yaghshas sidrata mā yaghshā when there covered the Lote Tree what covered it.
17
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ mā zāghal baṣaru wa mā ṭaghā His gaze did not swerve, nor did it overstep the bounds.
18
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ laqad ra-ā min āyāti rabbihil kubrā Certainly he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.
19
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ afara aytumullāta wal `uzzā Have you considered Lat and ‘Uzza?
20
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ wa manātath thālithatal-ukhrā and Manat, the third one?
21
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ alakumudh dhakaru walahul-unthā Are you to have males and He females?
22
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā That, then, will be an unfair division!
23
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ in hiya illā asmā-un sammaytumūhā antum wa-ābā-ukum mā anzalallāhu bihā min sulṭān ۚ in yattabi`ūna illaẓ ẓanna wa mā tahwal-anfus ۖ walaqad jā-ahum min rabbihimul hudā These are but names, which you have coined—you and your fathers—for which Allah has not sent down any authority. They follow nothing but conjectures and the desires of the [lower] soul, while there has already come to them the guidance from their Lord.
24
أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ am lilinsāni mā tamannā Shall man have whatever he yearns for?
25
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ falillāhil-ākhiratu wal-ūlā Yet to Allah belong this world and the Hereafter.
26
وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ wakam min malakin fis samāwāti lā tughnī shafā`atuhum shay-an illā min ba`di an ya-dhanallāhu liman yashā-u wayarḍā How many an angel there is in the heavens whose intercession is of not any avail, except after Allah permits whomever He wishes and approves of!
27
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ innal ladhīna lā yu-minūna bil-ākhirati layusammūnal malā-ikata tasmiyatal-unthā Indeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter give female names to the angels.
28
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا wa mā lahum bihi min `il-m ۖ in yattabi`ūna illaẓ ẓann ۖ wa innaẓ ẓanna lā yughnī minal ḥaqqi shay-ā They do not have any knowledge of that. They follow nothing but conjectures, and conjecture is no substitute for the truth.
29
فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا fa-a`riḍ `an man tawallā `an dhikrinā walam yurid illal-ḥayātad dunyā So avoid those who turn away from Our remembrance and desire nothing but the life of the world.
30
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ dhālika mablaghuhum minal `il-m ۚ inna rabbaka huwa a`lamu biman ḍalla `an sabīlihi wahuwa a`lamu bimanih-tadā That is the ultimate reach of their knowledge. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are [rightly] guided.
31
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى walillāhi mā fis samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍi liyajziyal ladhīna asā-ū bimā `amilū wayajziyal ladhīna aḥsanū bil ḥusnā To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil for what they have done, and reward those who do good with the best [of rewards].
32
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ alladhīna yajtanibūna kabā-iral-ithmi wal fawāḥisha illallamam ۚ inna rabbaka wāsi`ul maghfirah ۚ huwa a`lamu bikum idh ansha-akum minal-arḍi wa idh antum ajinnatun fī buṭūni ummahātikum ۖ falā tuzakkū anfusakum ۖ huwa a`lamu bimanit-taqā Those who avoid major sins and indecencies, apart from [minor and occasional] lapses. Indeed your Lord is expansive in [His] forgiveness. He knows you best since [the time] He produced you from the earth and since you were foetuses in the bellies of your mothers. So do not flaunt your piety: He knows best those who are Godwary.
33
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ afara aytal ladhī tawallā Did you see him who turned away,
34
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ wa-a`ṭā qalīlan wa-akdā gave a little and held off?
35
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ a`indahu `il-mul ghaybi fahuwa yarā Does he have the knowledge of the Unseen so that he sees?
36
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ am lam yunabba-bimā fī ṣuḥufi mūsā Has he not been informed of what is in the scriptures of Moses,
37
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ wa ibrāhīmal ladhī waffā and of Abraham, who fulfilled [his summons]:
38
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ allā taziru wāziratun wizra ukhrā that no bearer shall bear another’s burden,
39
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ wa-an laysa lilinsāni illā mā sa`ā that nothing belongs to man except what he strives for,
40
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ wa-anna sa`yahu sawfa yurā and that he will soon be shown his endeavour,
41
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ thumma yujzāhul jazā-al-awfā then he will be rewarded for it with the fullest reward;
42
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ wa-anna ilā rabbikal muntahā that the terminus is toward your Lord,
43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ wa-annahu huwa aḍ-ḥaka wa-abkā that it is He who makes [men] laugh, and weep,
44
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا wa-annahu huwa amāta wa-aḥyā that it is He who brings death and gives life,
45
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ wa-annahu khalaqaz zawjaynidh dhakara wal-unthā that it is He who created the mates, the male and the female,
46
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ min nuṭfatin idhā tumnā from a drop of [seminal] fluid when emitted;
47
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ wa-anna `alayhin nash-atal-ukhrā that with Him lies the second genesis,
48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ wa-annahu huwa aghnā wa-aqnā that it is He who enriches and grants possessions,
49
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ wa-annahu huwa rabbush shi`rā that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius;
50
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ wa-annahu ahlaka `ādanl-ūlā that it is He who destroyed the former ‘Ad,
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ waqawma nūḥin min qabl ۖ innahum kānū hum aẓlama wa-aṭghā and the people of Noah before that; indeed they were more unjust and rebellious;
53
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ wal mu-tafikata ahwā and He overthrew the town that was overturned,
54
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ faghashhāhā mā ghashhā covering it with what covered it.
55
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ fabi-ayyi ālā-i rabbika tatamārā Then which of the bounties of your Lord will you dispute?
56
هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ hādhā nadhīrun minan nudhuril-ūlā This is a warner, [in the tradition] of the warners of old.
57
