Adh-Dhariyat (#51)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
وَٱلذَّٰرِيَـٰتِ ذَرْوًا wadh dhāriyāti dharwā By the scattering [winds] that scatter [the clouds];
2
فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقْرًا fal ḥāmilāti wiqrā by the [rain] bearing [clouds] laden [with water];
3
فَٱلْجَـٰرِيَـٰتِ يُسْرًا fal jāriyāti yusrā by [the ships] which move gently [on the sea];
4
فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ أَمْرًا fal muqassimāti amrā by [the angels] who dispense [livelihood] by [His] command:
5
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌ innamā tū`adūna laṣādiq indeed what you are promised is true,
6
وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٌ wa innad dīna lawāqi` and indeed the retribution will surely come to pass!
7
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْحُبُكِ was samā-i dhātil ḥubuk By the sky full of adornment [with stars],
8
إِنَّكُمْ لَفِى قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍ innakum lafī qawlin mukhtalif indeed you are of different opinions!
9
يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَ yu-faku `anhu man ufik He who has been turned away [from the truth] is turned away from it.
10
قُتِلَ ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَ qutilal-kharrāṣūn Perish the liars,
11
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ alladhīna hum fī ghamratin sāhūn who are heedless in a stupor!
12
يَسْـَٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ yas-alūna ayyāna yawmud dīn They ask, ‘When will be the Day of Retribution?’
13
يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ yawma hum `alan nāri yuftanūn It is the day when they will be tormented in the Fire,
14
ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ dhūqū fitnatakum hādhal ladhī kuntum bihi tasta`jilūn [and will be told]: ‘Taste your torment. This is what you used to hasten.’
15
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ innal muttaqīna fī jannātin wa`uyūn Indeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and springs,
16
ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ ākhidhīna mā ātāhum rabbuhum ۚ innahum kānū qabla dhālika muḥsinīn receiving what their Lord has given them, for they had been virtuous aforetime.
17
كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ kānū qalīlan minal layli mā yahja`ūn They used to sleep a little during the night,
18
وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ wabil-as-ḥāri hum yastaghfirūn and at dawns they would plead for forgiveness,
19
وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ wafī amwālihim ḥaqqul lissā-ili wal maḥrūm and there was a share in their wealth for the beggar and the deprived.
20
وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ wafil-arḍi āyātul lil-mūqinīn In the earth are signs for those who have conviction,
21
وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ wafī anfusikum ۚ afalā tubṣirūn and in your souls [as well]. Will you not then perceive?
22
وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ wafis samā-i rizqukum wa mā tū`adūn And in the sky is your provision and what you are promised.
23
فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ fawarabbis samā-i wal-arḍi innahu laḥaqqun mithla mā annakum tanṭiqūn By the Lord of the sky and the earth, it is indeed the truth, just as [it is a fact that] you speak.
24
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ hal atāka ḥadīthu ḍayfi ibrāhīmal mukramīn Did you receive the story of Abraham’s honoured guests?
25
إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ idh dakhalū `alayhi faqālū salāmā ۖ qāla salāmun qawmun munkarūn When they entered into his presence, they said, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’ He answered, ‘[You are] an unfamiliar folk.’
26
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ farāgha ilā ahlihi fajā-a bi`ijlin samīn Then he retired to his family and brought a fat [roasted] calf,
27
فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ faqarrabahu ilayhim qāla alā ta-kulūn and put it near them. He said, ‘Will you not eat?’
28
فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ fa-awjasa minhum khīfah ۖ qālū lā takhaf ۖ wabashharūhu bighulāmin `alīm Then he felt a fear of them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid!’ and they gave him the good news of a wise son.
29
فَأَقْبَلَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ فِى صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ fa-aqbalatim-ra-atuhu fī ṣarratin faṣakkat wajhahā waqālat `ajūzun `aqīm Then his wife came forward crying [with joy]. She beat her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman!’
30
قَالُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ qālū kadhāliki qāla rabbuk ۖ innahu huwal ḥakīmul `alīm They said, ‘So has your Lord said. Indeed He is the All-wise, the All-knowing.’
31
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ qāla famā khaṭbukum ayyuhal mursalūn He said, ‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’
32
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ qālū innā ursilnā ilā qawmin mujrimīn They said, ‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,
33
لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍ linursila `alayhim ḥijāratan min ṭīn that We may rain upon them stones of clay,
34
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ musawwamatan `inda rabbika lil-musrifīn sent for the transgressors from your Lord.
35
فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ fa-akhrajnā man kāna fīhā minal mu-minīn So We picked out those who were in it of the faithful,
36
فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ famā wajadnā fīhā ghayra baytin minal muslimīn but We did not find there other than one house of Muslims,
37
وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ wataraknā fīhā āyatan lilladhīna yakhāfūnal `adhābal-alīm and We have left therein a sign for those who fear a painful punishment.’
38
وَفِى مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ wafī mūsā idh arsalnāhu ilā fir`awna bisulṭānin mubīn And in Moses [too there is a sign] when We sent him to Pharaoh with a manifest authority.
39
فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكْنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَـٰحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ fatawallā biruknihi waqāla sāḥirun aw majnūn But he turned away assured of his might, and said, ‘A magician or a crazy man!’
40
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ fa-akhadhnāhu wajunūdahu fanabadhnāhum fil yammi wahuwa mulīm So We seized him and his hosts, and cast them into the sea, while he was blameworthy.
41
وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَ wafī `ādin idh arsalnā `alayhimur rīḥal `aqīm And in ‘Ad when We unleashed upon them a barren wind.
42
مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ mā tadharu min shay-in atat `alayhi illā ja`alat-hu kar ramīm It left nothing that it came upon without making it like decayed bones.
43
وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ wafī thamūda idh qīla lahum tamatta`ū ḥattā ḥīn And in Thamud, when they were told, ‘Enjoy for a while.’
44
فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ fa`ataw `an amri rabbihim fa-akhadhat-humuṣ ṣā`iqatu wahum yanẓurūn Then they defied the command of their Lord; so the thunderbolt seized them as they looked on.
45
فَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ famas-taṭā`ū min qiyāmin wa mā kānū muntaṣirīn So they were neither able to rise up, nor to come to one another’s aid.
46
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ waqawma nūḥin min qabl ۖ innahum kānū qawman fāsiqīn And the people of Noah aforetime. Indeed, they were a transgressing lot.
47
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ was samā-a banaynāhā bi-aydin wa innā lamūsi`ūn We have built the heaven with might, and indeed it is We who are its expanders.
48
وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَـٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَـٰهِدُونَ wal-arḍa farashnāhā fani`mal māhidūn And We have spread out the earth, so how excellent spreaders We have been!
49
وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ wa min kulli shay-in khalaqnā zawjayni la`allakum tadhakkarūn In all things We have created pairs so that you may take admonition.
50
فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ fafirrū ilallāh ۖ innī lakum minhu nadhīrun mubīn ‘So flee toward Allah. Indeed, I am from Him a manifest warner to you.
51
وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ walā taj`alū ma`allāhi ilāhan ākhar ۖ innī lakum minhu nadhīrun mubīn Do not set up another god besides Allah. Indeed I am from Him a manifest warner to you.’
52
كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ kadhālika mā atal ladhīna min qablihim min rasūlin illā qālū sāḥirun aw majnūn So it was that there did not come any apostle to those who were before them but they said, ‘A magician,’ or ‘A crazy man!’
53
أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ atawāṣaw bih ۚ bal hum qawmun ṭāghūn Did they enjoin this upon one another?! Rather, they were a rebellious lot.
54
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍ fatawalla `anhum famā anta bimalūm So turn away from them, as you will not be blameworthy.
55
وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ wadhakkir fa-innadh dhikrā tanfa`ul mu-minīn And admonish, for admonition indeed benefits the faithful.
56
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ wa mā khalaqtul jinna wal-insa illā liya`budūn I did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me.
57
مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ mā urīdu minhum min rizqin wa mā urīdu an yuṭ`imūn I desire no provision from them, nor do I desire that they should feed Me.
58
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ innallāha huwar razzāqu dhul quwwatil matīn Indeed it is Allah who is the All-provider, Powerful and All-strong.
59
فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصْحَـٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ fa-inna lilladhīna ẓalamū dhanūban mithla dhanūbi aṣ-ḥābihim falā yasta`jilūn Indeed the lot of those who do wrong [now] will be like the lot of their [earlier] counterparts. So let them not ask Me to hasten on [that fate].
60
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن يَوْمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ fawaylul lilladhīna kafarū min yawmihimul ladhī yū`adūn Woe to the faithless for the day they are promised!
