بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
حمٓ ḥā mīm Ha, Meem.
2
تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ tanzīlul kitābi minallāhil `azīzil ḥakīm The [gradual] sending down of the Book is from Allah, the All-mighty, All-wise.
3
إِنَّ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ inna fis samāwāti wal-arḍi la-āyātin lil-mu-minīn In the heavens and the earth there are indeed signs for the faithful,
4
وَفِى خَلْقِكُمْ وَمَا يَبُثُّ مِن دَآبَّةٍ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ wafī khalqikum wa mā yabuthhu min dābbatin āyātul liqawmiy yūqinūn There are signs for people who have certainty in your own creation and in animals, He scatters abroad.
5
وَٱخْتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مِن رِّزْقٍ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَتَصْرِيفِ ٱلرِّيَـٰحِ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ wakhtilāfil layli wan nahāri wa mā anzalallāhu minas samā-i min rizqin fa-aḥyā bihil-arḍa ba`da mawtihā wataṣrīfir riyāḥi āyātul liqawmiy ya`qilūn There are signs for people who exercise their reason in the alternation of night and day, in the provision that Allah sends down from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death, and in the changing of the winds.
6
تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِ نَتْلُوهَا عَلَيْكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍۭ بَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ يُؤْمِنُونَ tilka āyātullāhi natlūhā `alayka bil ḥaqq ۖ fabi-ayyi ḥadīthin ba`dallāhi wa-āyātihi yu-minūn These are the signs of Allah that We recite for you in truth. So what discourse will they believe after Allah and His signs?
7
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ waylul likulli affākin athīm Woe to every sinful liar,
8
يَسْمَعُ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُصِرُّ مُسْتَكْبِرًا كَأَن لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا ۖ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ yasma`u āyātillāhi tutlā `alayhi thumma yuṣirru mustakbiran ka-an lam yasma`hā ۖ fabashhirhu bi`adhābin alīm who hears the signs of Allah being recited to him, yet persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So inform him of a painful punishment.
9
وَإِذَا عَلِمَ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا شَيْـًٔا ٱتَّخَذَهَا هُزُوًا ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ wa idhā `alima min āyātinā shay-anit-takhadhahā huzuwā ۚ ulā-ika lahum `adhābun muhīn Should he learn anything about Our signs, he takes them in derision. For such there is a humiliating punishment.
10
مِّن وَرَآئِهِمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَلَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مَّا كَسَبُوا۟ شَيْـًٔا وَلَا مَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ min warā-ihim jahannam ۖ walā yughnī `anhum mā kasabū shay-an walā mat-takhadhū min dūnillāhi awliyā-a ۖ walahum `adhābun `aẓīm Ahead of them is hell, and neither what they have earned, nor what they had taken as guardians besides Allah will avail them in any way, and there is a great punishment for them.
11
هَـٰذَا هُدًى ۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مِّن رِّجْزٍ أَلِيمٌ hādhā hudā ۖ wal ladhīna kafarū bi-āyāti rabbihim lahum `adhābun min rijzin alīm This is [true] guidance, and there is a painful punishment due to defilement for those who defy the signs of their Lord.
12
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلْبَحْرَ لِتَجْرِىَ ٱلْفُلْكُ فِيهِ بِأَمْرِهِۦ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ allāhul ladhī sakhhara lakumul baḥra litajriyal fulku fīhi bi-amrihi walitabtaghū min faḍlihi wala`allakum tashkurūn It is Allah who disposed the sea for you[r benefit] so that the ships may sail in it by His command, that you may seek of His bounty and that you may give thanks.
13
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مِّنْهُ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ wasakhhara lakum mā fis samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍi jamī`an minh ۚ inna fī dhālika la-āyātin liqawmiy yatafakkarūn He has disposed for you[r benefit] whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth; all is from Him. There are indeed signs in that for a people who reflect.
14
قُل لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ لَا يَرْجُونَ أَيَّامَ ٱللَّهِ لِيَجْزِىَ قَوْمًۢا بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ qul lilladhīna āmanū yaghfirū lilladhīna lā yarjūna ayyāmallāhi liyajziya qawman bimā kānū yaksibūn Say to the faithful to forgive those who do not expect Allah’s days, that He may [Himself] requite every people for what they used to earn.
15
مَنْ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ وَمَنْ أَسَآءَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۖ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ man `amila ṣāliḥan falinafsih ۖ wa man asā-a fa`alayhā ۖ thumma ilā rabbikum turja`ūn Whoever acts righteously, it is for his own soul, and whoever does evil, it is to its own detriment, then you will be brought back to your Lord.
16
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْحُكْمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَفَضَّلْنَـٰهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ walaqad ātaynā banī isrā-iylal-kitāba wal ḥukma wan nubuwwata warazaqnāhum minaṭ ṭayyibāti wafaḍḍalnāhum `alal-`ālamīn Certainly We gave the Children of Israel the Book, judgement and prophethood and We provided them with all the good things. We gave them an advantage over all the nations,
17
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم بَيِّنَـٰتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ فَمَا ٱخْتَلَفُوٓا۟ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْعِلْمُ بَغْيًۢا بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْضِى بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ wa-ātaynāhum bayyinātin minal-amr ۖ famakh-talafū illā min ba`di mā jā-ahumul `il-mu baghyan baynahum ۚ inna rabbaka yaqḍī baynahum yawmal qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn and We gave them manifest precepts. But they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Indeed your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that about which they used to differ.
18
ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَـٰكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِيعَةٍ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ فَٱتَّبِعْهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَآءَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ thumma ja`alnāka `alā sharī`atim minal-amri fattabi`hā walā tattabi` ahwā-al ladhīna lā ya`lamūn Then We set you upon a clear course of the Law; so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.
19
إِنَّهُمْ لَن يُغْنُوا۟ عَنكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًٔا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ innahum lan yughnū `anka minallāhi shay-ā ۚ wa innaẓ ẓālimīna ba`ḍuhum awliyā-u ba`ḍ ۖ wallāhu waliyyul muttaqīn Indeed they will not avail you in any way against Allah. Indeed the wrongdoers are allies of one another, but Allah is the ally of the Godwary.
20
هَـٰذَا بَصَـٰٓئِرُ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ hādhā baṣā-iru linnāsi wahudan waraḥmatun liqawmiy yūqinūn These are eye-openers for mankind, and guidance and mercy for a people who have certainty.
21
أَمْ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱجْتَرَحُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ أَن نَّجْعَلَهُمْ كَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَوَآءً مَّحْيَاهُمْ وَمَمَاتُهُمْ ۚ سَآءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ am ḥasibal ladhīnaj-taraḥus sayyi-āti an naj`alahum kal ladhīna āmanū wa`amiluṣ ṣāliḥāti sawā-an maḥyāhum wa mamātuhum ۚ sā-a mā yaḥkumūn Do those who have perpetrated misdeeds suppose that We shall treat them like those who have faith and do righteous deeds, their life and death being equal? Evil is the judgement that they make!
22
وَخَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلِتُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ wakhalaqallāhus samāwāti wal-arḍa bil ḥaqqi walitujzā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat wahum lā yuẓlamūn Allah created the heavens and the earth with consummate wisdom, so that every soul may be requited for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.
23
أَفَرَءَيْتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِۦ وَقَلْبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَـٰوَةً فَمَن يَهْدِيهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ afara ayta manit-takhadha ilāhahu hawāhu wa-aḍallahullāhu `alā `il-min wakhatama `alā sam`ihi waqalbihi waja`ala `alā baṣarihi ghishāwatan faman yahdīhi min ba`dillāh ۚ afalā tadhakkarūn Have you seen him who has taken his desire to be his god and whom Allah has led astray knowingly, set a seal upon his hearing and heart, and put a blindfold on his sight? So who will guide him after Allah [has consigned him to error]? Will you not then take admonition?
24
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا يُهْلِكُنَآ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهْرُ ۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ waqālū mā hiya illā ḥayātunad dunyā namūtu wanaḥyā wa mā yuhlikunā illad dahr ۚ wa mā lahum bidhālika min `il-m ۖ in hum illā yaẓunnūn They say, ‘There is nothing but the life of this world: we live and we die, and nothing but time destroys us.’ But they do not have any knowledge of that, and they only make conjectures.
25
وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُنَا بَيِّنَـٰتٍ مَّا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ wa idhā tutlā `alayhim āyātunā bayyinātin mā kāna ḥujjatahum illā an qālu-tū bi-ābā-inā in kuntum ṣādiqīn When Our manifest signs are recited to them, their only argument is to say, ‘Bring our fathers back [to life], if you are truthful.’
26
قُلِ ٱللَّهُ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يَجْمَعُكُمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ qulillāhu yuḥyīkum thumma yumītukum thumma yajma`ukum ilā yawmil qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi walākinna aktharan nāsi lā ya`lamūn Say, ‘It is Allah who gives you life, then He makes you die. Then He will gather you on the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.’
27
وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَخْسَرُ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ walillāhi mulkus samāwāti wal-arḍ ۚ wayawma taqūmus sā`atu yawma-idhiy yakhsarul mubṭilūn To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and when the Hour sets in, the falsifiers will be losers on that day.
28
وَتَرَىٰ كُلَّ أُمَّةٍ جَاثِيَةً ۚ كُلُّ أُمَّةٍ تُدْعَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ watarā kulla ummatin jāthiyah ۚ kullu ummatin tud`ā ilā kitābihal yawma tujzawna mā kuntum ta`malūn And you will see every nation fallen on its knees. Every nation will be summoned to its book: ‘Today you will be requited for what you used to do.
29
هَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبُنَا يَنطِقُ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَسْتَنسِخُ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ hādhā kitābunā yanṭiqu `alaykum bil ḥaqq ۚ innā kunnā nastansikhu mā kuntum ta`malūn This is Our book, which speaks truly against you. Indeed We used to record what you used to do.’
30
فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَيُدْخِلُهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْمُبِينُ fa-ammal ladhīna āmanū wa`amiluṣ ṣāliḥāti fayudkhiluhum rabbuhum fī raḥmatih ۚ dhālika huwal fawzul mubīn As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is the manifest success!
31
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَفَلَمْ تَكُنْ ءَايَـٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ وَكُنتُمْ قَوْمًا مُّجْرِمِينَ wa-ammal ladhīna kafarū afalam takun āyātī tutlā `alaykum fastakbartum wakuntum qawman mujrimīn But as for the faithless, [they will be asked,] ‘Were not My signs recited to you? But you were disdainful, and you were a guilty lot.
32
وَإِذَا قِيلَ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا قُلْتُم مَّا نَدْرِى مَا ٱلسَّاعَةُ إِن نَّظُنُّ إِلَّا ظَنًّا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُسْتَيْقِنِينَ wa idhā qīla inna wa`dallāhi ḥaqqun was sā`atu lā rayba fīhā qultum mā nadrī mas sā`atu in naẓunnu illā ẓannan wa mā naḥnu bimustayqinīn When it was said, ‘‘Allah’s promise is indeed true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,’’ you said, ‘‘We do not know what the Hour is. We know nothing beyond conjectures, and we do not possess any certainty.’’ ’
33
وَبَدَا لَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ wabadā lahum sayyi-ātu mā `amilū waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahzi-ūn The evils of what they had done will appear to them, and they will be besieged by what they used to deride.
34
وَقِيلَ ٱلْيَوْمَ نَنسَىٰكُمْ كَمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَـٰذَا وَمَأْوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِينَ waqīlal-yawma nansākum kamā nasītum liqā-a yawmikum hādhā wa ma-wākumun nāru wa mā lakum min nāṣirīn And it will be said, ‘Today We will forget you, just as you forgot the encounter of this day of yours. The Fire will be your abode, and you will not have any helpers.
35
ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذْتُمْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُوًا وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ فَٱلْيَوْمَ لَا يُخْرَجُونَ مِنْهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ dhālikum bi-annakumut-takhadhtum āyātillāhi huzuwan wagharratkumul ḥayātud dunyā ۚ fal yawma lā yukhrajūna minhā walā hum yusta`tabūn That is because you took the signs of Allah in derision, and the life of the world had deceived you.’ So today, they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be asked to propitiate [Allah].
36
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْحَمْدُ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَرَبِّ ٱلْأَرْضِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ falillāhil ḥamdu rabbis samāwāti warabbil-arḍi rabbil `ālamīn So all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, the Lord of all the worlds.
37
وَلَهُ ٱلْكِبْرِيَآءُ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ walahul kibriyā-u fis samāwāti wal-arḍ ۖ wahuwal `azīzul ḥakīm To Him belongs all supremacy in the heavens and the earth, and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
