4
وَعَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا سَـٰحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ wa`ajibū an jā-ahum mundhirun minhum ۖ waqālal-kāfirūna hādhā sāḥirun kadhhāb They consider it odd that there should come to them a warner from among themselves, and the faithless say, ‘This is a magician, a mendacious liar.’
5
أَجَعَلَ ٱلْـَٔالِهَةَ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عُجَابٌ aja`alal-ālihata ilāhan wāḥidā ۖ inna hādhā lashay-un `ujāb ‘Has he reduced the gods to one god? This is indeed an odd thing!’
6
وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِنْهُمْ أَنِ ٱمْشُوا۟ وَٱصْبِرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ يُرَادُ wanṭalaqal mala-u minhum anim-shū waṣbirū `alā ālihatikum ۖ inna hādhā lashay-un yurād Their elite go about [urging others]: ‘Go and stand by your gods! This is indeed the desirable thing [to do].
7
مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِى ٱلْمِلَّةِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا ٱخْتِلَـٰقٌ mā sami`nā bihādhā fil millatil-ākhirati in hādhā illakh-tilāq We did not hear of this in the latter-day creed. This is nothing but a fabrication.
8
أَءُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّ مِّن ذِكْرِى ۖ بَل لَّمَّا يَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِ a-unzila `alayhidh dhikru min bayninā ۚ bal hum fī shakkin min dhikrī ۖ bal lammā yadhūqū `adhāb Has the Reminder been sent down to him out of [all of] us?’ Indeed, they are in doubt concerning My Reminder. Indeed, they have not yet tasted My punishment.
9
أَمْ عِندَهُمْ خَزَآئِنُ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْوَهَّابِ am `indahum khazā-inu raḥmati rabbikal `azīzil wahhāb Do they possess the treasuries of the mercy of your Lord, the All-mighty, the All-munificent?
10
أَمْ لَهُم مُّلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ فَلْيَرْتَقُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَسْبَـٰبِ am lahum mulkus samāwāti wal-arḍi wa mā baynahumā ۖ falyartaqū fil-asbāb Do they own the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them? [If so,] let them ascend [to the higher spheres] by the means [of ascension].
11
جُندٌ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ jundun mā hunālika mahzūmun minal-aḥzāb [They are but] a host routed out there of the factions.
12
كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو ٱلْأَوْتَادِ kadhhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin wa`ādun wafir`awnu dhul-awtād Before them Noah’s people impugned [their apostle] and [so did the people of] ‘Ad, and Pharaoh, the Impaler [of his victims],
13
وَثَمُودُ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍ وَأَصْحَـٰبُ لْـَٔيْكَةِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ wathamūdu waqawmu lūṭin wa-aṣ-ḥābul-aykah ۚ ulā-ikal-aḥzāb and Thamud, and the people of Lot, and the inhabitants of Aykah: those were the factions.
14
إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ in kullun illā kadhhabar rusula faḥaqqa `iqāb There was not any one but such as impugned the apostles; so My retribution became due [against them].
15
وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقٍ wa mā yanẓuru hā-ulā-i illā ṣayḥatan wāḥidatan mā lahā min fawāq These [too] do not await but a single Cry, which will not grant [them] any respite.
16
وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ waqālū rabbanā `ajjil lanā qiṭṭanā qabla yawmil ḥisāb They say, ‘Our Lord! Hasten on for us our share before the Day of Reckoning.’
17
ٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلْأَيْدِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ iṣ-bir `alā mā yaqūlūna wadhkur `abdanā dāwūda dhal-ayd ۖ innahu awwāb Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant, David, [the man] of strength. Indeed he was a penitent [soul].
18
إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ innā sakhharnal jibāla ma`ahu yusabbiḥna bil `ashiyyi wal-ishrāq We disposed the mountains to glorify [Allah] with him at evening and dawn,
19
وَٱلطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةً ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ waṭ ṭayra maḥshūrah ۖ kullul lahu awwāb and the birds [as well], mustered [in flocks]; all echoing him [in a chorus].
20
وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ washadadnā mulkahu wa-ātaynāhul ḥikmata wafaṣlal-khiṭāb We consolidated his kingdom and gave him wisdom and conclusive speech.
21
وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا۟ ٱلْمِحْرَابَ wahal atāka naba-ul khaṣmi idh tasawwarul miḥrāb Has there not come to you the account of the contenders, when they scaled the wall into the sanctuary?
22
إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ دَاوُۥدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ خَصْمَانِ بَغَىٰ بَعْضُنَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَٱهْدِنَآ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ idh dakhalū `alā dāwūda fafazi`a minhum ۖ qālū lā takhaf ۖ khaṣmāni baghā ba`ḍunā `alā ba`ḍin faḥkum baynanā bil ḥaqqi walā tushṭiṭ wāhdinā ilā sawā-iṣ ṣirāṭ When they entered into the presence of David, he was alarmed by them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid. [We are only] two contenders: one of us has bullied the other. So judge justly between us, and do not exceed [the bounds of justice], and show us the right path.’
23
إِنَّ هَـٰذَآ أَخِى لَهُۥ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِىَ نَعْجَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ inna hādhā akhī lahu tis`un watis`ūna na`jatan waliya na`jatun wāḥidatun faqāla akfilnīhā wa`azzanī fil khiṭāb ‘This brother of mine has ninety-nine ewes, while I have only a single ewe, and [yet] he says, ‘Commit it to my care,’ and he browbeats me in speech.’
24
قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّـٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ ۩ qāla laqad ẓalamaka bisu-āli na`jatika ilā ni`ājih ۖ wa inna kathīran minal khulaṭā-i layabghī ba`ḍuhum `alā ba`ḍin illal ladhīna āmanū wa`amiluṣ ṣāliḥāti waqalīlun mā hum ۗ waẓanna dāwūdu annamā fatannāhu fastaghfara rabbahu wakharra rāki`an wa-anāb ۩ He said, ‘He has certainly wronged you by asking your ewe in addition to his own ewes, and indeed many partners bully one another, except such as have faith and do righteous deeds, and few are they.’ Then David knew that We had tested him, whereat he pleaded with his Lord for forgiveness, and fell down in prostration and repented.
25
فَغَفَرْنَا لَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ faghafarnā lahu dhālik ۖ wa inna lahu `indanā lazulfā waḥusna ma-āb So We forgave him that, and indeed he has [a station of] nearness with Us and a good destination.

Indeed, We have made you a vicegerent on the earth. So judge between people with justice, and do not follow your desires, or they will lead you astray from the way of Allah. Indeed there is a severe punishment for those who stray from the way of Allah, because of their forgetting the Day of Reckoning.’
27
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَـٰطِلًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ wa mā khalaqnas samā-a wal-arḍa wa mā baynahumā bāṭilā ۚ dhālika ẓannul ladhīna kafarū ۚ fawaylul lilladhīna kafarū minan nār We did not create the sky and the earth and whatever is between them in vain. That is a conjecture of the faithless. So woe to the faithless for the Fire!
28
أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ كَٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ كَٱلْفُجَّارِ am naj`alul ladhīna āmanū wa`amiluṣ ṣāliḥāti kal mufsidīna fil-arḍi am naj`alul muttaqīna kal fujjār Shall We treat those who have faith and do righteous deeds like those who cause corruption on the earth? Shall We treat the Godwary like the vicious?
