4
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى وَهَنَ ٱلْعَظْمُ مِنِّى وَٱشْتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا وَلَمْ أَكُنۢ بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّا qāla rabbi innī wahanal `aẓmu minnī washta`alar ra-su shayban walam akun bidu`ā-ika rabbi shaqiyyā He said, ‘My Lord! 8
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِى غُلَـٰمٌ وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًا وَقَدْ بَلَغْتُ مِنَ ٱلْكِبَرِ عِتِيًّا qāla rabbi annā yakūnu lī ghulāmun wakānatim-ra-atī `āqiran waqad balaghtu minal kibari `itiyyā He said, ‘My Lord! 10
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجْعَل لِّىٓ ءَايَةً ۚ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَـٰثَ لَيَالٍ سَوِيًّا qāla rabbij-`al lī āyah ۚ qāla āyatuka allā tukalliman nāsa thalātha layālin sawiyyā He said, ‘My Lord! Appoint a sign for me.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three complete nights.’
11
فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلْمِحْرَابِ فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِمْ أَن سَبِّحُوا۟ بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا fakharaja `alā qawmihi minal miḥrābi fa-awḥā ilayhim an sabbiḥū bukratan wa`ashiyyā So he emerged before his people from the Temple, and signalled to them that they should glorify [Allah] morning and evening.
12
[We said,] ‘Hold on with power to the Book!’ And We gave him judgement while still a child,

21
قَالَ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ هُوَ عَلَىَّ هَيِّنٌ ۖ وَلِنَجْعَلَهُۥٓ ءَايَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَرَحْمَةً مِّنَّا ۚ وَكَانَ أَمْرًا مَّقْضِيًّا qāla kadhāliki qāla rabbuki huwa `alayya hayyin ۖ walinaj`alahu āyatan linnāsi waraḥmatan minnā ۚ wakāna amran maqḍiyyā He said, ‘So shall it be. 27
فَأَتَتْ بِهِۦ قَوْمَهَا تَحْمِلُهُۥ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْـًٔا فَرِيًّا fa-atat bihi qawmahā taḥmiluh ۖ qālū yāmaryamu laqad ji-ti shay-an fariyyā Then carrying him she brought him to her people. They said, ‘O Mary, you have certainly come up with an odd thing!

35
مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ مِن وَلَدٍ ۖ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥٓ ۚ إِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ mā kāna lillāhi an yattakhidha min walad ۖ subḥānah ۚ idhā qaḍā amran fa-innamā yaqūlu lahu kun fayakūn It is not for Allah to take a son. Immaculate is He! When He decides on a matter, He just says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is.
36
وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ wa innallāha rabbī warabbukum fa`budūh ۚ hādhā ṣirāṭun mustaqīm [And Jesus said,] ‘Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him. This is a straight path.’
37
فَٱخْتَلَفَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ مِنۢ بَيْنِهِمْ ۖ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن مَّشْهَدِ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ fakhtalafal-aḥzābu min baynihim ۖ fawaylul lilladhīna kafarū min mash-hadi yawmin `aẓīm But the factions differed among themselves. So woe to the faithless at the scene of a tremendous day.
38
أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ يَوْمَ يَأْتُونَنَا ۖ لَـٰكِنِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ٱلْيَوْمَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ asmi` bihim wa-abṣir yawma ya-tūnanā ۖ lākiniẓ ẓālimūnal yawma fī ḍalālin mubīn How well they will hear and how well they will see on the day when they come to Us! 39
وَأَنذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَسْرَةِ إِذْ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ وَهُمْ فِى غَفْلَةٍ وَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ wa-andhirhum yawmal ḥasrati idh quḍiyal-amru wahum fī ghaflatin wahum lā yu-minūn Warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be decided, while they are [yet] heedless and do not have faith.

Why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees, and is of no avail to you in any way?
43
Indeed a knowledge has already come to me, which has not come to you. So follow me that I may guide you to a right path.
44
Do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan is disobedient to the All-beneficent.
45
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٌ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَـٰنِ وَلِيًّا yā-abati innī akhāfu an yamassaka `adhābun minar raḥmāni fatakūna lishhayṭāni waliyyā Father! I am indeed afraid that a punishment from the All-beneficent will befall you, and you will become Satan’s accomplice.’
46
قَالَ أَرَاغِبٌ أَنتَ عَنْ ءَالِهَتِى يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ ۖ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ لَأَرْجُمَنَّكَ ۖ وَٱهْجُرْنِى مَلِيًّا qāla arāghibun anta `an ālihatī yā-ibrāhīm ۖ la-in lam tantahi la-arjumannak ۖ wāhjurnī maliyyā He said, ‘Abraham! وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ وَمَا تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى عَسَىٰٓ أَلَّآ أَكُونَ بِدُعَآءِ رَبِّى شَقِيًّا wa-a`tazilukum wa mā tad`ūna min dūnillāhi wa-ad`ū rabbī `asā allā akūna bidu`ā-i rabbī shaqiyyā I dissociate myself from you and whatever you invoke besides Allah. I will supplicate my Lord. Hopefully, I will not be disappointed in supplicating my Lord.’
49
فَلَمَّا ٱعْتَزَلَهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا نَبِيًّا falamma'-tazalahum wa mā ya`budūna min dūnillāhi wahabnā lahu is-ḥāqa waya`qūb ۖ wakullan ja`alnā nabiyyā So when he had left them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each We made a prophet.
50

54
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ إِسْمَـٰعِيلَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صَادِقَ ٱلْوَعْدِ وَكَانَ رَسُولًا نَّبِيًّا wadhkur fil kitābi ismā`īl ۚ innahu kāna ṣādiqal wa`di wakāna rasūlan nabiyyā And mention in the Book Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and an apostle and prophet.

When the signs of the All-beneficent were recited to them, they would fall down weeping in prostration.
59
فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيًّا fakhalafa min ba`dihim khalfun aḍā`uṣ ṣalāta wattaba`ush shahawāt ۖ fasawfa yalqawna ghayyā But they were succeeded by an evil posterity who neglected the prayer, and followed [their base] appetites. So they will soon encounter [the reward of] perversity,
60

67
أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْـًٔا awalā yadhkurul-insānu annā khalaqnāhu min qablu walam yaku shay-ā Does not man remember that We created him before when he was nothing?

76
وَيَزِيدُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱهْتَدَوْا۟ هُدًى ۗ وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ مَّرَدًّا wayazīdullāhul ladhīnah-tadaw hudā ۗ wal bāqiyātuṣ ṣāliḥātu khayrun `inda rabbika thawāban wakhayrun maraddā Allah enhances in guidance those who are [rightly] guided, and lasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord in reward, and better at the return [to Allah].

أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى كَفَرَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَقَالَ لَأُوتَيَنَّ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا afara aytal ladhī kafara bi-āyātinā waqāla la-ūtayanna mālan wawaladā Have you not regarded him who defies Our signs, and says, ‘I will surely be given wealth and children’?
78
أَطَّلَعَ ٱلْغَيْبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًا aṭṭala`al ghayba amit-takhadha `indar raḥmāni `ahdā Has he come to know the Unseen, or taken a promise from the All-beneficent?
79
كَلَّا ۚ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا يَقُولُ وَنَمُدُّ لَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ مَدًّا kallā ۚ sanaktubu mā yaqūlu wanamuddu lahu minal `adhābi maddā No indeed! We will write down what he says, and We will prolong his punishment endlessly.
80

81
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً لِّيَكُونُوا۟ لَهُمْ عِزًّا wattakhadhū min dūnillāhi ālihatan liyakūnū lahum `izzā They have taken gods besides Allah that they may be a [source of] might to them.
82
كَلَّا ۚ سَيَكْفُرُونَ بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ وَيَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضِدًّا kallā ۚ sayakfurūna bi`ibādatihim wayakūnūna `alayhim ḍiddā No Indeed! Soon they will disown their worship, and they will be their opponents.
83
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّا alam tara annā arsalnash shayāṭīna `alal-kāfirīna ta-uzzuhum azzā Have you not regarded that We unleash the devils upon the faithless to urge them vigorously?
84
فَلَا تَعْجَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا نَعُدُّ لَهُمْ عَدًّا falā ta`jal `alayhim ۖ innamā na`uddu lahum `addā So do not make haste against them; indeed We are counting for them, a counting [down].
85

89
لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِدًّا laqad ji-tum shay-an iddā You have certainly advanced something hideous!
90
تَكَادُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ يَتَفَطَّرْنَ مِنْهُ وَتَنشَقُّ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَتَخِرُّ ٱلْجِبَالُ هَدًّا takādus samāwātu yatafaṭṭarna minhu watanshaqqul-arḍu watakhirrul jibālu haddā The heavens are about to be rent apart at it, the earth to split open, and the mountains to collapse into bits,
91
أَن دَعَوْا۟ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ وَلَدًا an da`aw lirraḥmāni waladā that they should ascribe a son to the All-beneficent!
92
وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا wa mā yanbaghī lirraḥmāni an yattakhidha waladā It does not behoove the All-beneficent to take a son.
93

Can you descry any one of them, or hear from them so much as a murmur?
