bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
allāhumma ṣalli `alā muḥammadin wa āli muḥammad
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
1
`an jābiribni `abdillāhil anṣāri
Narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari
2
`an fāṭimataz zahrā-i `alayhas salāmu binti rasūlillāhi ṣallallāhu `alayhi wa ālihi qāl
From Fatima al-Zahra, peace be upon her, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, who said:
3
sami`tu fāṭimata annahā qālat
I heard Fatima say:
4
dakhala `alayya abī rasūlullāhi fī ba`ḍil ayyām
My father, the Messenger of Allah, came to me one day
5
faqāla as salāmu `alayki yā fāṭimah
And said, "Peace be upon you, O Fatima"
6
faqultu `alaykas salām
I replied, "And peace be upon you"
7
qāla innī ajidu fī badanī ḍu`fā
He said, "I feel weakness in my body"
8
faqultu lahu u`idhuka billāhi yā abatāhu minaḍ ḍu`f
I said to him, "I seek Allah's protection for you, O father, from weakness"
9
faqāla yā fāṭimatu ītīnī bil kisā-il yamānī faghaṭṭīnī bih
He said, "O Fatima, bring me the Yemeni cloak and cover me with it"
10
fa-ataytuhu bil kisā-il yamānī faghaṭṭaytuhu bih
So I brought him the Yemeni cloak and covered him with it
11
waṣir-tu anẓuru ilayhi wa idhā wajhuhu yatala-la-u
I was looking at him and his face was shining
12
ka-annahul badru fī laylati tamāmihi wakamālih
Like the full moon on the night of its perfection and completeness
13
famā kānat illā sā`atan wa idhā biwaladiyal ḥasani qad aqbal
After a while, my son Hassan came
14
waqāla as salāmu `alayki yā ummāh
And said, "Peace be upon you, O mother"
15
faqultu wa`alaykas salāmu yā qurrata `aynī wathamarata fu-di
I replied, "And peace be upon you, O coolness of my eyes and fruit of my heart"
16
faqāla yā ummāhu innī ashammu `indaki rā-iḥatan ṭayyibah
He said, "O mother, I smell a sweet fragrance here
17
ka-annahā rā-iḥatu jaddī rasūlillāh
Like the fragrance of my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah"
18
faqultu na`am inna jaddaka taḥtal kisā
I said, "Yes, your grandfather is under the cloak"
19
fa-aqbalal ḥasanu naḥwal kisā-i waqāla as salāmu `alayka yā jaddāhu yā rasūlallāh
Hassan approached the cloak and said, "Peace be upon you, O grandfather, O Messenger of Allah
20
ata-dhanu lī an adkhula ma`aka taḥtal kisā
Do you permit me to enter with you under the cloak?"
21
faqāla wa`alaykas salāmu yā waladī wayā ṣāḥiba ḥawḍi
He replied, "Peace be upon you, O my son and O keeper of my pond
22
qad adhintu lak
I permit you"
23
fadakhala ma`ahu taḥtal kisā
So he entered with him under the cloak
24
famā kānat illā sā`atan wa idhā biwaladiyal ḥusayni qad aqbala waqāl
After a while, my son Hussain came and said,
25
as salāmu `alayki yā ummāh
"Peace be upon you, O mother"
26
faqultu wa`alaykas salāmu yā waladī wayā qurrata `aynī wathamarata fu-di
I replied, "And peace be upon you, O my son and coolness of my eyes and fruit of my heart"
27
faqāla lī yā ummāhu innī ashammu `indaki rā-iḥatan ṭayyibah
He said to me, "O mother, I smell a sweet fragrance here
28
ka-annahā rā-iḥatu jaddī rasūlillāhi ṣallallāhu `alayhi wa ālih
Like the fragrance of my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family"
29
faqultu na`am inna jaddaka wa-akhāka taḥtal kisā
I said, "Yes, your grandfather and your brother are under the cloak"
30
fadanal ḥusaynu naḥwal kisā
Hussain approached the cloak
31
waqāla as salāmu `alayka yā jaddāhu as salāmu `alayka yā manikhtārahullāh
And said, "Peace be upon you, O grandfather. Peace be upon you, O chosen one of Allah
32
ata-dhanu lī an akūna ma`akumā taḥtal kisā
Do you permit me to be with you both under the cloak?"
33
faqāla wa`alaykas salāmu yā waladi
He replied, "Peace be upon you, O my son
34
wayā shāfi`a ummatī qad adhintu lak
And O intercessor of my nation, I permit you"
35
fadakhala ma`ahumā taḥtal kisā
So he entered with them under the cloak
36
fa-aqbala `inda dhālika abulḥasani `aliyyubnu abī ṭālib
Then Abu al-Hassan Ali ibn Abi Talib came
37
waqāla as salāmu `alayki yā binta rasūlillāh
And said, "Peace be upon you, O daughter of the Messenger of Allah"
38
faqultu wa`alaykas salāmu yā abal ḥasani wa yā amīral mu-minīn
I replied, "And peace be upon you, O Abu al-Hassan and O Commander of the Faithful"
39
faqāla yā fāṭimatu innī ashammu `indaki rā-iḥatan ṭayyibah
He said, "O Fatima, I smell a sweet fragrance here
40
ka-annahā rā-iḥatu akhī wabni `ammī rasūlillāh
Like the fragrance of my brother and cousin, the Messenger of Allah"
41
I said, "Yes, he is here with your two sons under the cloak"
42
fa-aqbala `aliyyun naḥwal kisā
Ali approached the cloak
43
waqāla as salāmu `alayka yā rasūlallāh
And said, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah
44
ata-dhanu lī an akūna ma`akum taḥtal kisā
Do you permit me to be with you under the cloak?"
45
qāla lahu wa`alaykas salāmu yā akhī yā waṣiyyi
He said to him, "Peace be upon you, O my brother, O my trustee
46
wakhalīfatī waṣāḥiba liwā-ī
My successor, and bearer of my banner
47
qad adhintu laka fadakhala `aliyyun taḥtal kisā
I permit you." So Ali entered under the cloak
48
thumma ataytu naḥwal kisā
Then I approached the cloak
49
waqultu as salāmu `alayka yā abatāhu yā rasūlallāh
And said, "Peace be upon you, O father, O Messenger of Allah
50
ata-dhanu lī an akūna ma`akum taḥtal kisā
Do you permit me to be with you under the cloak?"
51
qāla wa`alaykis salāmu yā bintī wayā baḍ`atī qad adhintu lak
He said, "Peace be upon you, O my daughter and part of me, I permit you"
52
fadakhaltu taḥtal kisā
So I entered under the cloak
53
falammaktamalnā jamī`an taḥtal kisā-i akhadha abī rasūlullāhi biṭarafayil kisā
When we were all gathered under the cloak, my father, the Messenger of Allah, took the two edges of the cloak
54
wa-awma-a biyadihil yumnā ilas samā-i waqāl
And pointed with his right hand toward the sky and said:
55
allāhumma inna hā-ulā-i ahlu baytī wakhāṣṣatī waḥāmmatī
"O Allah, these are my family members, my special ones, and my close ones
56
laḥmuhum laḥmī wadamuhum damī
Their flesh is my flesh and their blood is my blood
57
yu-limunī mā yu-limuhum
What pains them pains me
58
wayaḥzununī mā yaḥzunuhum
And what grieves them grieves me
59
anā ḥar-bun liman ḥārabahum
I am at war with whoever wars against them
60
wasilmun liman sālamahum
And at peace with whoever is at peace with them
61
wa`aduwwun liman `ādāhum
And an enemy to whoever is their enemy
62
wamuḥibbun liman aḥabbahum
And a friend to whoever befriends them
63
innahum minnī wa ana minhum
They are from me and I am from them
64
faj`al ṣalawātika wabarakātika waraḥmatak
So place Your blessings, benedictions, mercy
65
waghufrānaka wariḍwānaka `alayy
Forgiveness, and pleasure upon me
66
wa`alayhim wa-adh-hib `anhumur rijsa waṭahhir-hum taṭ-hirā
And upon them, and remove from them impurity and purify them thoroughly."
67
faqālallāhu `azzawajall
Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:
68
yā malā-ikatī wayā sukkāna samāwāti
"O My angels and dwellers of My heavens
69
innī mā khalaqtu samā-an mabniyyatan walā ar-ḍan mad-ḥiyyatan walā qamaran munīrā
I have not created a built sky, nor a spread-out earth, nor a shining moon
70
walā shamsan muḍī-atan walā falakan yadūru walā baḥran yajrī walā fulkan yasri
Nor a bright sun, nor a revolving orbit, nor a flowing sea, nor a sailing ship
71
illā fī maḥabbati hā-ulā-il khamsatil ladhīna hum taḥtal kisā
Except for the love of these five who are under the cloak."
72
faqālal amīnu jibrā-īlu yā rabbi waman taḥtal kisā
The Trustworthy Angel Gabriel said, "O Lord, who is under the cloak?"
73
faqāla `azzawajall
The Mighty and Majestic said:
74
hum ahlu baytin nubuwwati wama`dinur risālah
"They are the People of the House of Prophethood and the treasures of the Message
75
hum fāṭimatu wa-abūhā waba`luhā wabanūhā
They are Fatima, her father, her husband, and her sons."
76
faqāla jibrā-īlu yā rabbi ata-dhanu lī an ahbiṭa ilal ar-ḍ
Gabriel said, "O Lord, do You permit me to descend to earth
77
li-akūna ma`ahum sādisā
To be with them as the sixth?"
78
faqālallāhu na`am qad adhintu lak
Allah said, "Yes, I permit you."
79
fahabaṭal amīnu jibrā-īlu waqāla as salāmu `alayka yā rasūlallāh
So the Trustworthy Gabriel descended and said, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah
80
al `aliyul a`lā yuqri-ukas salāma wayakhuṣṣuka bittaḥiyyati wal-ikrām
The Most High sends His greetings to you and honors you with special greetings and reverence
81
wayaqūlu laka wa`izzatī wajalāli
And says to you, by My Might and Majesty,
82
innī mā khalaqtu samā-an mabniyyah
I have not created a built sky
83
walā ar-ḍan mad-ḥiyyatan walā qamaran munīran walā shamsan muḍi-ah
Nor a spread-out earth, nor a shining moon, nor a bright sun
84
walā falakan yadūru walā baḥran yajrī walā fulkan yasri
Nor a revolving orbit, nor a flowing sea, nor a sailing ship
85
illā li-ajlikum wamaḥabbatikum
Except for your sake and your love
86
waqad adhina lī an adkhula ma`akum
And He has permitted me to join you
87
fahal tadhanu lī yā rasūlallāh
So do you permit me, O Messenger of Allah?"
88
faqāla rasūlullāhi wa`alaykas salāmu yā amīna waḥyillāh
The Messenger of Allah replied, "Peace be upon you, O trustee of Allah's revelation
89
innahu na`am qad adhintu lak
Yes, I permit you."
90
fadakhala jibrā-īlu ma`anā taḥtal kisā
So Gabriel entered with us under the cloak
91
faqāla li-abī innallāha qad awḥā ilaykum yaqūl
He said to my father, "Allah has revealed to you saying:
92
innamā yuridullāhu liyudh-hiba `ankumur rijs
'Allah only desires to keep away impurity from you,
93
ahlal bayti wayuṭahhirakum taṭ-hirā
O People of the House, and to purify you thoroughly.'"
94
faqāla `aliyyun li-abī yā rasūlallāhi akhbir-nī mā lijulūsinā
Then Ali said to my father, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me what merit our gathering
95
hādhā taḥtal kisā-i minal faḍli `indallāh
Under this cloak has with Allah?"
96
faqālan nabiyy
The Prophet said:
97
walladhī ba`athanī bil ḥaqqi nabiyyā
"By Him Who sent me with the truth as a Prophet
98
waṣṭafānī birrisālati najiyyā
And chose me with the message as a confidant
99
mā dhukira khabarunā hādhā fī maḥfilin min maḥāfil
This event of ours is not mentioned in any gathering
100
ahlil ar-ḍi wafīhi jam`un min shī`atinā wamuḥibbīnā
On earth in which our Shia and lovers are present
101
illā wanazalat `alayhimur raḥmah
Without mercy descending upon them
102
waḥaffat bihimul malā-ikatu wastaghfarat lahum ilā an yatafarraqū
And angels surrounding them, asking forgiveness for them until they disperse."
103
faqāla `aliyyun idhan wallāhi fuznā wafāza shī`atunā warabbil ka`bah
Ali said, "Then, by Allah, we have succeeded, and our Shia have succeeded, by the Lord of the Kaaba!"
104
faqālan nabiyyu thāniyā
The Prophet said a second time:
105
yā `aliyyu walladhī ba`athanī bil ḥaqqi nabiyyā
"O Ali, by Him Who sent me with the truth as a Prophet
106
waṣṭafānī birrisālati najiyyā
And chose me with the message as a confidant
107
mā dhukira khabarunā hādhā fī maḥfilin min maḥāfili ahlil ar-ḍ
This event of ours is not mentioned in any gathering on earth
108
wafīhi jam`un min shī`atinā wamuḥibbīnā
In which our Shia and lovers are present
109
wafīhim mahmūmun illā wafarrajallāhu hammah
And among them is anyone distressed, without Allah relieving his distress
110
walā maghmūmun illā wakashafallāhu ghammah
Nor anyone sorrowful, without Allah removing his sorrow
111
walā ṭālibu ḥājatin illā waqaḍallāhu ḥājatah
Nor anyone with a need, without Allah fulfilling his need."
112
faqāla `aliyyun idhan wallāhi fuznā wasu`idnā
Ali said, "Then, by Allah, we have succeeded and are blessed
113
wakadhālika shī`atunā fāzū wasu`idū fid dunyā wal-akhirati warabbil ka`bah
And likewise, our Shia have succeeded and are blessed in this world and the Hereafter, by the Lord of the Kaaba!"
114
allāhumma ṣalli `alā muḥammadin wa āli muḥammad
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
