بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1

3
وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِ سَبْحًا was sābiḥāti sabḥā by those who swim smoothly,
4
فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِ سَبْقًا fas sābiqāti sabqā by those who, racing, take the lead,

8
قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ qulūbun yawma-idhin wājifah hearts will be trembling on that day,
9
أَبْصَـٰرُهَا خَـٰشِعَةٌ abṣāruhā khāshi`ah bearing a humbled look.
10
يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ yaqūlūna a-innā lamardūdūna fil ḥāfirah They will say, ‘Are we being returned to our earlier state?
11
أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَـٰمًا نَّخِرَةً a-idhā kunnā `iẓāman nakhirah What, even after we have been decayed bones?!’
12
قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ qālū tilka idhan karratun khāsirah They will say, ‘This is, then, a ruinous return!’
13
فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidah Yet it will be only a single shout,
14
فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ fa-idhā hum bis sāhirah and behold, they will be awake.
15
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ hal atāka ḥadīthu mūsā Did you receive the story of Moses,
16
إِذْ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى idh nādāhu rabbuhu bil wādil muqaddasi ṭuwā when his Lord called out to him in the holy valley of Tuwa?

18
فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ faqul hal laka ilā an tazakkā and say, ‘‘Would you purify yourself?
19
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ wa-ahdiyaka ilā rabbika fatakhshā I will guide you to your Lord, that you may fear [Him]?’’ ’
20

22
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ thumma adbara yas`ā Then he turned back, walking swiftly,
23
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ faḥashara fanādā and gathered [the people] and proclaimed,
24
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ faqāla ana rabbukumul-a`lā saying, ‘I am your exalted lord!’
25
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ fa-akhadhahullāhu nakālal-ākhirati wal-ūlā So Allah seized him with the punishment of this life and the Hereafter.
26
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ inna fī dhālika la`ibratan liman yakhshā There is indeed a moral in that for someone who fears!
27

29
وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا wa-aghṭasha laylahā wa-akhraja ḍuḥāhā and darkened its night, and brought forth its forenoon.
30
وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ wal-arḍa ba`da dhālika daḥāhā Thereafter He spread out the earth,
31
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا akhraja minhā mā-ahā wa mar`āhā brought forth from it its water and pastures,
32
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا wal jibāla arsāhā setting firm the mountains,

مَتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ matā`al lakum wali-an`āmikum as a [place of] sustenance for you and your livestock.
34
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ fa-idhā jā-atiṭ ṭāmmatul kubrā When the Greatest Catastrophe befalls
35
يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ yawma yatadhakkarul-insānu mā sa`ā —the day when man will remember his endeavours
36
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ waburrizatil jaḥīmu liman yarā and hell is brought into view for those who can see—
37
فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ fa-ammā man ṭaghā as for him who has been rebellious
38
وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا wa-ātharal ḥayātad dunyā and preferred the life of this world,
39

41
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ fa-innal jannata hiyal ma-wā his refuge will indeed be paradise.

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ ilā rabbika muntahāhā Its outcome is with your Lord.
45
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا innamā anta mundhiru man yakhshāhā You are only a warner for those who are afraid it.
46
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا ka-annahum yawma yarawnahā lam yalbathū illā `ashiyyatan aw ḍuḥāhā The day they see it, it shall be as if they had not stayed [in the world] except for an evening or forenoon.
