Al-Qiyamah (#75)

Translation

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ lā uqsimu biyawmil qiyāmah I swear by the Day of Resurrection!
2
وَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ walā uqsimu bin nafsillawwāmah And I swear by the self-critical soul!
3
أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ ayaḥsabul-insānu allan najma`a `iẓāmah Does man suppose that We will not put together his bones [at resurrection]?
4
بَلَىٰ قَـٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّىَ بَنَانَهُۥ balā qādirīna `alā an nusawwiya banānah Yes indeed, We are able to [re]shape [even] his fingertips!
5
بَلْ يُرِيدُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ bal yurīdul-insānu liyafjura amāmah Indeed, man desires to go on living viciously.
6
يَسْـَٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ yas-alu ayyāna yawmul qiyāmah He asks, ‘When will be this “day of resurrection”?!’
7
فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلْبَصَرُ fa-idhā bariqal baṣar But when the eyes are dazzled,
8
وَخَسَفَ ٱلْقَمَرُ wakhasafal qamar the moon is eclipsed,
9
وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ wajumi`ash shamsu wal qamar and the sun and the moon are brought together,
10
يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ yaqūlul-insānu yawma-idhin aynal mafarr that day man will say, ‘Where is the escape [from this day]?’
11
كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ kallā lā wazar No indeed! There will be no refuge!
12
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ ilā rabbika yawma-idhinil-mustaqarr That day the [final] goal will be toward your Lord.
13
يُنَبَّؤُا۟ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ yunabba-ul-insānu yawma-idhin bimā qaddama wa-akhhar That day man will be informed about what [works] he had sent ahead [to the scene of judgement] and [the legacy that he had] left behind.
14
بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ balil-insānu `alā nafsihi baṣīrah Indeed, man is a witness to himself,
15
وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ walaw alqā ma`ādhīrah though he should offer excuses [to justify his failings].
16
لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِۦٓ lā tuḥarrik bihi lisānaka lita`jala bih Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.
17
إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ inna `alaynā jam`ahu waqur-ānah Indeed it is up to Us to put it together and to recite it.
18
فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَـٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ fa-idhā qara-nāhu fattabi` qur-ānah And when We have recited it, follow its recitation.
19
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ thumma inna `alaynā bayānah Then, its exposition [also] lies with Us.
20
كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ kallā bal tuḥibbūnal `ājilah No! Indeed, you love this transitory life
21
وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ watadharūnal-ākhirah and forsake the Hereafter.
22
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ wujūhun yawma-idhin nāḍirah Some faces will be fresh on that day,
23
إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ ilā rabbihā nāẓirah looking to their Lord,
24
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَاسِرَةٌ wawujūhun yawma-idhin bāsirah and some faces will be scowling on that day,
25
تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ taẓunnu an yuf`ala bihā fāqirah knowing that they will be dealt out a punishment breaking the spine.
26
كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِىَ kallā idhā balaghatit tarāqiy No indeed! When it reaches up to the collar bones
27
وَقِيلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍ waqīla man ۜ rāq and it is said, ‘Who will take him up?’
28
وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلْفِرَاقُ waẓanna annahul firāq and he knows that it is the [time of] parting,
29
وَٱلْتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ wal taffatis sāqu bis sāq and each shank clasps the other shank,
30
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمَسَاقُ ilā rabbika yawma-idhinil-masāq that day he shall be driven toward your Lord.
31
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ falā ṣaddaqa walā ṣallā He neither confirmed [the messages of Allah], nor did he pray,
32
وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ walākin kadhhaba watawallā but denied [them] and turned away,
33
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ thumma dhahaba ilā ahlihi yatamaṭṭā and went back swaggering to his family.
34
أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ awlā laka fa-awlā So, woe to you! Woe to you!
35
ثُمَّ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰٓ thumma awlā laka fa-awlā Again, woe to you! Woe to you!
36
أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى ayaḥsabul-insānu an yutraka sudā Does man suppose that he has been abandoned to futility?
37
أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّن مَّنِىٍّ يُمْنَىٰ alam yaku nuṭfatan min maniyyin yumnā Was he not a drop of emitted semen,
38
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ thumma kāna `alaqatan fakhalaqa fasawwā and then a clinging mass? Whereat He created and proportioned [him],
39
فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ faja`ala minhuz zawjaynidh dhakara wal-unthā and made of him the two sexes, male and female.
40
أَلَيْسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَـٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحْـِۧىَ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ alaysa dhālika biqādirin `alā an yuḥ-yiyal mawtā Is not [someone like] that able to revive the dead?
