Al-Waqi'ah (#56)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ idhā waqa`atil wāqi`ah When the Imminent [Hour] befalls
2
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ laysa liwaq`atihā kādhibah —there is no denying that it will befall—
3
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ khāfiḍatun rāfi`ah [it will be] lowering and exalting.
4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا idhā rujjatil-arḍu rajjā When the earth is shaken violently,
5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا wabussatil jibālu bassā and the mountains are shattered into bits
6
فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا fakānat habā-an munbathhā and become scattered dust,
7
وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً wakuntum azwājan thalāthah you will be three groups:
8
فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ fa-aṣ-ḥābul maymanati mā aṣ-ḥābul maymanah The People of the Right Hand—and what are the People of the Right Hand?!
9
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ wa-aṣ-ḥābul mash-amati mā aṣ-ḥābul mash-amah And the People of the Left Hand—and what are the People of the Left Hand?!
10
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ was sābiqūnas sābiqūn And the Foremost Ones are the foremost ones:
11
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ulā-ikal muqarrabūn they are the ones brought near [to Allah],
12
فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ fī jannātin na`īm [who will reside] in the gardens of bliss.
13
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ thullatun minal-awwalīn A multitude from the former [generations]
14
وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ waqalīlun minal-ākhirīn and a few from the latter ones.
15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ `alā sururin mawḍūnah On brocaded couches
16
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ muttaki-īna `alayhā mutaqābilīn reclining on them, face to face.
17
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ yaṭūfu `alayhim wildānun mukhalladūn They will be waited upon by immortal youths,
18
بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ bi-akwābin wa-abārīqa waka-sin min ma`īn with goblets and ewers and a cup of a clear wine,
19
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ lā yuṣadda`ūna `anhā walā yunzifūn which causes them neither headache nor stupefaction,
20
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ wafākihatim mimmā yatakhayyarūn and such fruits as they prefer
21
وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūn and such flesh of fowls as they desire,
22
وَحُورٌ عِينٌ waḥūrun `īn and big-eyed houris
23
كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ka-amthālillu-lu-il maknūn like guarded pearls,
24
جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ jazā-an bimā kānū ya`malūn a reward for what they used to do.
25
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا lā yasma`ūna fīhā laghwan walā ta-thīmā They will not hear therein any vain talk or sinful speech,
26
إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا illā qīlan salāman salāmā but only the watchword, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’
27
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ wa-aṣ-ḥābul yamīni mā aṣ-ḥābul yamīn And the People of the Right Hand—what are the People of the Right Hand?!
28
فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ fī sidrin makhḍūd Amid thornless lote trees
29
وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ waṭalḥin manḍūd and clustered spathes
30
وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ waẓillin mamdūd and extended shade,
31
وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ wa mā-in maskūb and ever-flowing water
32
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ wafākihatin kathīrah and abundant fruits,
وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ wafurushin marfū`ah and noble spouses.
35
إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً innā ansha-nāhunna inshā-ā We have created them with a special creation,
36
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا faja`alnāhunna abkārā and made them virgins,
37
عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا `uruban atrābā loving, of a like age,
38
لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ li-aṣ-ḥābil yamīn for the People of the Right Hand.
39
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ thullatun minal-awwalīn A multitude from the former [generations]
40
وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ wathullatun minal-ākhirīn and a multitude from the latter [ones].
41
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ wa-aṣ-ḥābush shimāli mā aṣ-ḥābush shimāl And the People of the Left Hand—what are the People of the Left Hand?!
42
فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ fī samūmin waḥamīm Amid infernal miasma and boiling water
43
وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ waẓillin min yaḥmūm and the shadow of a dense black smoke,
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ innahum kānū qabla dhālika mutrafīn Indeed they had been affluent before this,
46
وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ wakānū yuṣirrūna `alal-ḥinthil `aẓīm and they used to persist in the great sin.
47
وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ wakānū yaqūlūna a-idhā mitnā wakunnā turāban wa`iẓāman a-innā lamab`ūthūn And they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?!
48
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ awa-ābā-unal-awwalūn And our forefathers too?!’
49
قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ qul innal-awwalīna wal-ākhirīn Say, ‘Indeed the former and latter generations
50
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ lamajmū`ūna ilā mīqāti yawmin ma`lūm will all be gathered for the tryst of a known day.
لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ la-ākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūm will surely eat from the Zaqqum tree
53
فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ famāli-ūna minhal buṭūn and stuff your bellies with it,
54
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ fashāribūna `alayhi minal ḥamīm and drink boiling water on top of it,
55
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ fashāribūna shurbal hīm drinking like thirsty camels.’
56
هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ hādhā nuzuluhum yawmad dīn Such will be the hospitality they receive on the Day of Retribution.
57
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūn We created you. Then why do you not acknowledge it?
58
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ afara aytum mā tumnūn Have you considered the sperm that you emit?
59
ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ a-antum takhluqūnahu am naḥnul khāliqūn Is it you who create it, or are We the creator?
60
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumul mawta wa mā naḥnu bimasbūqīn We have ordained death among you, and We are not to be outmaneuvered
61
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ `alā an nubaddila amthālakum wanunshi-akum fī mā lā ta`lamūn from replacing you with your likes and recreating you in [a realm] you do not know.
62
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ walaqad `alimtumun nash-atal-ūlā falawlā tadhakkarūn Certainly you have known the first genesis, then why do you not take admonition?
63
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ afara aytum mā taḥruthūn Have you considered what you sow?
64
ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ a-antum tazra`ūnahu am naḥnuz zāri`ūn Is it you who make it grow, or are We the grower?
65
لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ law nashā-u laja`alnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūn If We wish, We turn it into chaff, whereat you are left stunned [saying to yourselves,]
66
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ innā lamughramūn ‘Indeed we have suffered loss!
67
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn No, we are deprived!’
68
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ afara aytumul mā-al ladhī tashrabūn Have you considered the water that you drink?
69
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ a-antum anzaltumūhu minal muzni am naḥnul munzilūn Is it you who bring it down from the rain cloud, or is it We who bring [it] down?
70
لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ law nashā-u ja`alnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūn If We wish We can make it bitter. Then why do you not give thanks?
71
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ afara aytumun nāral latī tūrūn Have you considered the fire that you kindle?
72
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ a-antum ansha-tum shajaratahā am naḥnul munshi-ūn Was it you who caused its tree to grow, or were We the grower?
73
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ naḥnu ja`alnāhā tadhkiratan wa matā`al lil-muqwyn It was We who made it a reminder and a boon for the desert-dwellers.
74
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ fasabbiḥ bismi rabbikal `aẓīm So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme.
75
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ falā uqsimu bimawāqi`in nujūm I swear by the places where the stars set!
76
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ wa innahu laqasamul law ta`lamūna `aẓīm And indeed it is a great oath, should you know.
77
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ innahu laqur-ānun karīm This is indeed a noble Quran,
78
فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ fī kitābin maknūn in a guarded Book
79
لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ lā yamassuhu illal-muṭahharūn —no one touches it except the pure ones—
80
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ tanzīlun min rabbil `ālamīn sent down gradually from the Lord of all the worlds.
81
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ afabihādhal ḥadīthi antum mud-hinūn What! Do you take lightly this discourse?
82
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ wataj`alūna rizqakum annakum tukadhhibūn And make your denial of it your vocation?
83
فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ falawlā idhā balaghatil ḥulqūm So when it reaches the throat [of the dying person],
84
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ wa-antum ḥīna-idhin tanẓurūn and at that moment you are looking on [at his bedside]
85
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tubṣirūn —and We are nearer to him than you are, though you do not perceive—
86
فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīn then why do you not restore it, if you are not subject
87
تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ tarji`ūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīn [to Divine dispensation], if you are truthful?
88
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ fa-ammā in kāna minal muqarrabīn Then, if he be of those brought near,
89
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu na`īm then ease, abundance, and a garden of bliss.
90
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ wa-ammā in kāna min aṣ-ḥābil yamīn And if he be of the People of the Right Hand,
91
فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ fasalāmul laka min aṣ-ḥābil yamīn then [he will be told,] ‘Peace be on you, from the People of the Right Hand!’
92
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ wa-ammā in kāna minal mukadhhibīnaḍ ḍāllīn But if he be of the impugners, the astray ones,
93
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ fanuzulun min ḥamīm then a treat of boiling water
94
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ wataṣliyatu jaḥīm and entry into hell.
95
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqul yaqīn Indeed this is certain truth.
96
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ fasabbiḥ bismi rabbikal `aẓīm So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme!
