Ash-Shams (#91)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا wash shamsi waḍuḥāhā By the sun and her forenoon splendour,
2
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا wal qamari idhā talāhā by the moon when he follows her,
3
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا wan nahāri idhā jallāhā by the day when it reveals her,
4
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا wal layli idhā yaghshāhā by the night when it covers her,
5
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا was samā-i wa mā banāhā by the sky and Him who built it,
6
وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا wal-arḍi wa mā ṭaḥāhā by the earth and Him who spread it,
7
وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا wanafsin wa mā sawwāhā by the soul and Him who fashioned it,
8
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا fa-alhamahā fujūrahā wataqwāhā and inspired it with [discernment between] its virtues and vices:
9
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا qad aflaḥa man zakkāhā one who purifies it is felicitous,
10
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا waqad khāba man dassāhā and one who betrays it fails.
11
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ kadhhabat thamūdu biṭaghwāhā The [people of] Thamud denied [Allah’s signs] out of their rebellion,
12
إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا idhin-ba`atha ashqāhā when the most wretched of them rose up.
13
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا faqāla lahum rasūlullāhi nāqatallāhi wasuqyāhā The apostle of Allah had told them, ‘This is Allah’s she-camel, let her drink!’
14
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا fakadhhabūhu fa`aqarūhā fadamdama `alayhim rabbuhum bidhanbihim fasawwāhā But they impugned him and hamstrung her. So their Lord took them unawares by night because of their sin, and levelled it.
15
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَا walā yakhāfu `uqbāhā And He does not fear its outcome.
