بَرَآءَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ barā-atun minallāhi warasūlihi ilal ladhīna `āhadtum minal mushrikīn IMMUNITY is granted those idolaters by God and his Apostle with whom you have a treaty.
2
فَسِيحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْزِى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ fasīḥū fil-arḍi arba`ata ash-hurin wa`lamū annakum ghayru mu`jizillāhi wa-annallāha mukhzil kāfirīn (They can) move about for four months freely in the land, but should know they cannot escape (the law of) God, and that God can put the unbelievers to shame.

وَأَذَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ wa-adhānun minallāhi warasūlihi ilan nāsi yawmal ḥajjil-akbari annallāha barī-un minal mushrikīna warasūluh ۚ fa-in tubtum fahuwa khayrul lakum ۖ wa in tawallaytum fa`lamū annakum ghayru mu`jizillāh ۗ wabashhiril ladhīna kafarū bi`adhābin alīm A general proclamation is (made) this day of the Greater Pilgrimage on the part of God and His Apostle, that God is not bound (by any contract) to idolaters, nor is His Apostle. It is, therefore, better for you to repent. If you do not, remember that you cannot elude (the grip of) God. So announce to those who deny the truth the news of painful punishment,
4
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَلَمْ يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ illal ladhīna `āhadtum minal mushrikīna thumma lam yanquṣūkum shay-an walam yuẓāhirū `alaykum aḥadan fa-atimmū ilayhim `ahdahum ilā muddatihim ۚ innallāha yuḥibbul muttaqīn Except those idolaters with whom you have a treaty, who have not failed you in the least, nor helped anyone against you. Fulfil your obligations to them during the term (of the treaty). God loves those who take heed for themselves.
5
فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلْأَشْهُرُ ٱلْحُرُمُ فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ ۚ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ fa-idhan-salakhal-ash-hurul ḥurumu faqtulul mushrikīna ḥaythu wajadtumūhum wakhudhūhum wāḥṣurūhum waq`udū lahum kulla marṣad ۚ fa-in tābū wa-aqāmuṣ ṣalāta wa-ātawuz zakāta fakhallū sabīlahum ۚ innallāha ghafūrun raḥīm But when these months, prohibited (for fighting), are over, slay the idolaters wheresoever you find them, and take them captive or besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every likely place. But if they repent and fulfil their devotional obligations and pay the zakat, then let them go their way, for God is forgiving and kind.
6
وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ٱسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ wa in aḥadun minal mushrikīnas-tajāraka fa-ajirhu ḥattā yasma`a kalāmallāhi thumma abligh-hu ma-manah ۚ dhālika bi-annahum qawmul lā ya`lamūn If an idolater seeks protection, then give him asylum that he may hear the word of God. Then escort him to a place of safety, for they are people who do not know.
7
كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّمْ عِندَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖ فَمَا ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ kayfa yakūnu lil-mushrikīna `ahdun `indallāhi wa`inda rasūlihi illal ladhīna `āhadtum `indal masjidil ḥarām ۖ famas-taqāmū lakum fastaqīmū lahum ۚ innallāha yuḥibbul muttaqīn How could there be a treaty between idolaters and God and His Apostle, except those you covenanted by the Sacred Mosque? Therefore as long as they are honest with you be correct with them, for God loves those who are godly.
8
كَيْفَ وَإِن يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُوا۟ فِيكُمْ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ يُرْضُونَكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتَأْبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ kayfa wa in yaẓharū `alaykum lā yarqubū fīkum illan walā dhimmah ۚ yurḍūnakum bi-afwāhihim wata-bā qulūbuhum wa-aktharuhum fāsiqūn How (can they be trusted)? If they prevail against you they will neither observe pacts nor good faith with you. They flatter you with their tongues, but their hearts are averse to you, for most of them are iniquitous.
9
ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ish-taraw bi-āyātillāhi thamanan qalīlan faṣaddū `an sabīlih ۚ innahum sā-a mā kānū ya`malūn They barter away the words of God for a petty price, and obstruct (others) from His path. How evil indeed are the things they do!
10
لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِى مُؤْمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ lā yarqubūna fī mu-minin illan walā dhimmah ۚ wa-ulā-ika humul mu`tadūn They have no regard for kinship or treaties with believers, for they are transgressors.
11
فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ ۗ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ fa-in tābū wa-aqāmuṣ ṣalāta wa-ātawuz zakāta fa-ikhwānukum fid dīn ۗ wanufaṣṣilul-āyāti liqawmiy ya`lamūn But if they repent and are firm in devotion and pay the zakat, then they are your brothers in faith. We explain Our commands distinctly for those who understand.
12
وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَـٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَ wa in nakathū aymānahum min ba`di `ahdihim waṭa`anū fī dīnikum faqātilū a-immatal kufri innahum lā aymāna lahum la`allahum yantahūn If they break their pledge after giving their word and revile your faith, fight these specimens of faithlessness, for surely their oaths have no sanctity: They may haply desist.
13
أَلَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخْرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ alā tuqātilūna qawman nakathū aymānahum wahammū bi-ikhrājir rasūli wahum bada-ūkum awwala marrah ۚ atakhshawnahum ۚ fallāhu aḥaqqu an takhshawhu in kuntum mu-minīn Will you not fight those who broke their pledge and plotted to banish the Apostle, and who were the first to attack you? Are you afraid of them? If you are believers you should fear God more.
14
قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ qātilūhum yu`adhhibhumullāhu bi-aydīkum wayukhzihim wayanṣurkum `alayhim wayashfi ṣudūra qawmin mu-minīn Fight them so that God may punish them at your hands, and put them to shame, and help you against them, and heal the wounds of the hearts of believers,
15
وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَيَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ wayudh-hib ghayẓa qulūbihim ۗ wayatūbullāhu `alā man yashā-u ۗ wallāhu `alīmun ḥakīm And remove the anger from their breasts; for God turns to whosoever desires. God is all-knowing and all-wise.
16
أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تُتْرَكُوا۟ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيجَةً ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ am ḥasibtum an tutrakū walammā ya`lamillāhul ladhīna jāhadū minkum walam yattakhidhū min dūnillāhi walā rasūlihi walal mu-minīna walījah ۚ wallāhu khabīrun bimā ta`malūn Do you think you will get away before God knows who among you fought and did not take anyone but God, His Apostle and the faithful, as their friends? God is cognisant of all that you do.
17
مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَن يَعْمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ mā kāna lil-mushrikīna an ya`murū masājidallāhi shāhidīna `alā anfusihim bil kufr ۚ ulā-ika ḥabiṭat a`māluhum wafin nāri hum khālidūn The idolaters have no right to visit the mosques of God while bearing testimony to their disbelief. Meaningless will be their acts, and in Hell they will bide for ever,
18
إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ فَعَسَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَن يَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ innamā ya`muru masājidallāhi man āmana billāhi wal yawmil-ākhiri wa-aqāmaṣ ṣalāta wa-ātaz zakāta walam yakhsha illallāh ۖ fa`asā ulā-ika an yakūnū minal muhtadīn Only those who believe in God and the Last Day, who fulfil their devotional obligations, pay the zakat, and fear no one but God, can visit the mosques of God. They may hope to be among the guided.
19
أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ ٱلْحَآجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَجَـٰهَدَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوُۥنَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ aja`altum siqāyatal ḥājji wa`imāratal masjidil ḥarāmi kaman āmana billāhi wal yawmil-ākhiri wajāhada fī sabīlillāh ۚ lā yastawūna `indallāh ۗ wallāhu lā yahdil qawmaẓ ẓālimīn Do you think that giving a drink of water to the pilgrims and going on a visit to the Sacred Mosque, is the same as believing in God and the Last Day, and striving in the cause of God? In the eyes of God it is not the same; and God does not show the unrighteous the way.
20
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ alladhīna āmanū wahājarū wajāhadū fī sabīlillāhi bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim a`ẓamu darajatan `indallāh ۚ wa-ulā-ika humul fā-izūn Those who accepted the faith and left their homes and fought in the way of God, wealth and soul, have a greater reward with God, and will be successful.
21
يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ yubashhiruhum rabbuhum biraḥmatim minhu wariḍwānin wajannātin lahum fīhā na`īmun muqīm Their Lord announces to them news of His mercy, acceptance, and gardens of lasting bliss

23
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنِ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْكُفْرَ عَلَى ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ yā-ayyuhal ladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū ābā-akum wa ikhwānakum awliyā-a inis-taḥabbul kufra `alal-iymān ۚ wa man yatawallahum minkum fa-ulā-ika humuẓ ẓālimūn O you who believe, do not hold your fathers and brothers as friends if they hold disbelief more dear than faith; and those of you who do so are iniquitous.
24
قُلْ إِن كَانَ ءَابَآؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلٌ ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَـٰرَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَآ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادٍ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ qul in kāna ābā-ukum wa-abnā-ukum wa ikhwānukum wa-azwājukum wa`ashīratukum wa-amwālunq-taraftumūhā watijāratun takhshawna kasādahā wa masākinu tarḍawnahā aḥabba ilaykum minallāhi warasūlihi wajihādin fī sabīlihi fatarabbaṣū ḥattā ya-tiyallāhu bi-amrih ۗ wallāhu lā yahdil qawmal fāsiqīn You tell them: "If your fathers and sons, your brothers and wives and families and wealth, or the business you fear may fail, and the mansions that you love, are dearer to you than God, His Apostle, and struggling in His cause, then wait until God's command arrives, for God does not show transgressors the way."
25
لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ laqad naṣarakumullāhu fī mawāṭina kathīratin wayawma ḥunaynin idh a`jabatkum kathratukum falam tughni `ankum shay-an waḍāqat `alaykumul-arḍu bimā raḥubat thumma wallaytum mudbirīn Indeed God has helped you on many occasions, even during the battle of Hunain, when you were elated with joy at your numbers which did not prove of the least avail, so that the earth and its vast expanse became too narrow for you, and you turned back and retreated.
26
ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ thumma anzalallāhu sakīnatahu `alā rasūlihi wa`alal-mu-minīna wa-anzala junūdal lam tarawhā wa`adhhabal ladhīna kafarū ۚ wadhālika jazā-ul kāfirīn Then God sent down a sense of tranquility on His Apostle and the faithful; and sent down troops invisible to punish the infidels. This is the recompense of those who do not believe.
27
ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ thumma yatūbullāhu min ba`di dhālika `alā man yashā-u ۗ wallāhu ghafūrun raḥīm Yet God may turn (even) after this to whomsoever He please, for God is compassionate and kind.

So they should not approach the Holy Mosque after this year. In case you fear indigence (from the stoppage of business with them), then God will enrich you of His bounty if He will, for God is all-knowing and all-wise.
29

وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖ يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوْلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ waqālatil yahūdu `uzayrunib-nullāhi waqālatin naṣāral masīḥub-nullāh ۖ dhālika qawluhum bi-afwāhihim ۖ yuḍāhi-ūna qawlal ladhīna kafarū min qabl ۚ qātalahumullāh ۚ annā yu-fakūn The Jews say: "Ezra is the son of God;" the Christians say: "Christ is the son of God." That is what they say with their tongues following assertions made by unbelievers before them. May they be damned by God: How perverse are they!

Too holy is He for what they ascribe to Him!
32
يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُطْفِـُٔوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَيَأْبَى ٱللَّهُ إِلَّآ أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ yurīdūna an yuṭfi-ū nūrallāhi bi-afwāhihim waya-ballāhu illā an yutimma nūrahu walaw karihal kāfirūn They wish to extinguish the light of God by uttering blasphemies; but God will not have it so, for He wills to perfect His light, however the unbelievers be averse.

To those who accumulate gold and silver, and do not spend in the way of God, announce the news of painful punishment.

Of these four are holy. This is the straight reckoning. So do not exceed yourselves during them; but fight the idolaters to the end as they fight you in like manner; and remember, God is with those Who preserve themselves from evil and do the right.

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِى ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ innaman nasī-u ziyādatun fil kufr ۖ yuḍallu bihil ladhīna kafarū yuḥillūnahu `āman wayuḥarrimūnahu `āmal liyuwāṭi-ū `iddata mā ḥarramallāhu fayuḥillū mā ḥarramallāh ۚ zuyyina lahum sū-u a`mālihim ۗ wallāhu lā yahdil qawmal kāfirīn Intercalating a month is adding to unbelief. The unbelievers are misguided by this, for they take the same month to be sacred one year and sacrilegious the next, thus making the number of months sanctified by God accord with theirs in order to make what God has forbidden, lawful. Attractive seem to them their evil deeds; but God does not show the unbelievers the way.

When both of them were in the cave, he said to his companion: "Do not grieve, for God is with us." Then God sent divine peace on him, and invisible armies for his help, and made the unbelievers' purpose abject. Most exalted is God's word, for God is all-mighty and all-wise.

They encourage what is bad and dissuade from the good, and tighten their purses (when it comes to spending in the way of God). Of God they are oblivious; so He is oblivious of them. The hypocrites are indeed transgressors.

This is sufficient for them: They have God's condemnation and lasting torment,

They did it only out of vengeance for God and His Apostle had enriched them by their grace. So, if they repent it is better for them. If they turn away then God would afflict them with painful punishment in this world and the next; and none will they have on the face of the earth to protect or help them.

يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ yaḥlifūna lakum litarḍaw `anhum ۖ fa-in tarḍaw `anhum fa-innallāha lā yarḍā `anil qawmil fāsiqīn They will plead on oath that you accept them. Even if you accept them, remember God does not accept people who are disobedient.

For them will be the adverse change, as God hears all and knows everything.

This is certainly a means of achieving nearness (to God), and God will admit them to His mercy, for God is forgiving and kind.

It may be that God will accept their repentance, for God is forgiving and kind.

Your blessings will surely bring them peace, for God hears all and knows everything.

Yet they will surely swear: "We had only meant well." But God is witness that they are liars.

But God does not guide the people who are wilfully unjust.

They fight in the cause of God, and kill and are killed. This is a promise incumbent on Him, as in the Torah, so the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is more true to his promise than God? So rejoice at the bargain you have made with Him; for this will be triumph supreme.

Yet when it became evident to him that (his father) was an enemy of God, he broke away from him, though Abraham was soft hearted and kind.

When a section of them were about to lose courage He turned to them in His mercy, for He is compassionate and kind.

So He softened towards them that they may repent; for God surely accepts repentance and is merciful.

Surely God does not let the recompense of those who do good to go waste.

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ wa-ammal ladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun fazādat-hum rijsan ilā rijsihim wa mātū wahum kāfirūn But it adds disbelief to disbelief for those whose hearts are filled with doubt, and they die disbelieving.

أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ awalā yarawna annahum yuftanūna fī kulli `āmin marratan aw marratayni thumma lā yatūbūna walā hum yadhhakkarūn Do they not know that they are tried every year once or twice? Even then they do not repent and take heed.

وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَىٰكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ ۚ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ wa idhā mā unzilat sūratun naẓara ba`ḍuhum ilā ba`ḍin hal yarākum min aḥadin thumman-ṣarafū ۚ ṣarafallāhu qulūbahum bi-annahum qawmul lā yafqahūn Whenever a Surah is revealed they look at each other (so as to ask): "Is anyone looking at Us?" and then turn away. Indeed God has turned their hearts away (from the truth), for they cannot discern the law of heaven.

لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ laqad jā-akum rasūlun min anfusikum `azīzun `alayhi mā `anittum ḥarīṣun `alaykum bil mu-minīna ra-ūfun raḥīm To you has come an Apostle from among you. Any sorrow that befalls you weighs upon him; He is eager for your happiness, full of concern for the faithful, compassionate and kind.

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ fa-in tawallaw faqul ḥasbiyallāhu lā ilāha illā huw ۖ `alayhi tawakkalt ۖ wahuwa rabbul `arshil `aẓīm So, if they turn away, say to them: "God is sufficient for me. There is no God but He; I depend on Him alone, the Lord of the glorious Throne."
