بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ was samā-i waṭ ṭāriq I CALL TO witness the heavens and the night Star --
2
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ wa mā adrāka maṭ ṭāriq How will you comprehend what the night star is?
3
ٱلنَّجْمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ an-najmuth thāqib It is the star that shines with a piercing brightness --
4
إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ in kullu nafsin lammā `alayhā ḥāfiẓ That over each soul there is a guardian.
5
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ falyanẓuril-insānu mimma khuliq Let man consider what he was made of:
6
خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ khuliqa min mā-in dāfiq He was created of spurting water
7
يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ ٱلصُّلْبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ yakhruju min bayniṣ ṣulbi wat tarā-ib Issuing from (the pelvis) between the backbone and the ribs.
8
إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٌ innahu `alā raj`ihi laqādir God has certainly power to bring him back (from the dead).
9
يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ yawma tublas sarā-ir The day all secrets are examined
10
فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن قُوَّةٍ وَلَا نَاصِرٍ famā lahu min quwwatin walā nāṣir He will have no strength or helper.
11
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجْعِ was samā-i dhātir raj` So I call to witness the rain-producing sky,
12
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ wal-arḍi dhātiṣ ṣad` And the earth which opens up (with verdure),
13
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ innahu laqawlun faṣl That this (Qur'an) is a decisive word
14
وَمَا هُوَ بِٱلْهَزْلِ wa mā huwa bil hazl And no trifle.
15
إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا innahum yakīdūna kaydā They are hatching up a plot,
16
وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًا wa-akīdu kaydā But I too am devising a plan.
17
فَمَهِّلِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًۢا famahhilil kāfirīna amhilhum ruwaydā So bear with unbelievers with patience, and give them respite for a while.
