إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ idhas samā-un shaqqat WHEN THE SKY is cleft asunder,
2
وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ wa-adhinat lirabbihā waḥuqqat And hearkens to its Lord and is dutiful,
3
وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ wa idhal-arḍu muddat When the earth is stretched out taut
4
وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ wa-alqat mā fīhā watakhallat And throws out whatever it contains and is empty,
5
وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ wa-adhinat lirabbihā waḥuqqat And hearkens to its Lord and is dutiful,
6

11
فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًا fasawfa yad`ū thubūrā Will pray for death,
12
وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا wayaṣlā sa`īrā But will be roasted in the fire.
13
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا innahu kāna fī ahlihi masrūrā He lived rejoicing among his people,
14
إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ innahu ẓanna an lan yaḥūr Never thinking he will return.

بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًا balā inna rabbahu kāna bihi baṣīrā Why not? His Lord was always watching him.
16
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ falā uqsimu bish shafaq So indeed I call to witness the evening twilight,
17
وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ wal layli wa mā wasaq And the night and all it gathers,
18
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ wal qamari idhat-tasaq And the moon when at the full,
19
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ latarkabunna ṭabaqan `an ṭabaq That you will climb from stage to stage.
20
فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ famā lahum lā yu-minūn So, wherefore do they not believe?
21
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩ wa idhā quri-a `alayhimul qur-ānu lā yasjudūn ۩ And when the Qur'an is recited to them do not bow in adoration?
22
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ balil ladhīna kafarū yukadhhibūn In fact the unbelievers disavow.
23
وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ wallāhu a`lamu bimā yū`ūn But God knows what they harbour in their breasts.

25
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭ illal ladhīna āmanū wa`amiluṣ ṣāliḥāti lahum ajrun ghayru mamnūn Except those who believe and do the right: For them there is reward unending.
