At-Takwir (#81)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ idhash shamsu kuwwirat When the sun is wound up,
2
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ wa idhan nujūmun-kadarat when the stars scatter,
3
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ wa idhal jibālu suyyirat when the mountains are set moving,
4
وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ wa idhal `ishāru `uṭṭilat when the pregnant camels are neglected,
5
وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ wa idhal wuḥūshu ḥushirat when the wild beasts are mustered,
6
وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ wa idhal biḥāru sujjirat when the seas are set afire,
7
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ wa idhan nufūsu zuwwijat when the souls are assorted,
8
وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ wa idhal maw-ū-datu su-ilat when the girl buried-alive will be asked
9
بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ bi-ayyi dhanbin qutilat for what sin she was killed.
10
وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ wa idhaṣ ṣuḥufu nushirat When the records [of deeds] are unfolded,
11
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ wa idhas samā-u kushiṭat when the sky is stripped off,
12
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ wa idhal jaḥīmu su``irat when hell is set ablaze,
13
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ wa idhal jannatu uzlifat when paradise is brought near,
14
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ `alimat nafsun mā aḥḍarat then a soul shall know what it has readied [for itself].
15
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ falā uqsimu bil khunnas So I swear by the stars that return,
16
ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ al-jawāril kunnas the comets,
17
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ wal layli idhā `as`as by the night as it approaches,
18
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ waṣ ṣubḥi idhā tanaffas by the dawn as it breathes:
19
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ innahu laqawlu rasūlin karīm it is indeed the speech of a noble apostle,
20
ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ dhī quwwatin `inda dhil `arshi makīn powerful and eminent with the Lord of the Throne,
21
مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ muṭā`in thamma amīn one who is obeyed and is trustworthy as well.
22
وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ wa mā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūn Your companion is not crazy:
23
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ walaqad ra-āhu bil-ufuqil mubīn certainly he saw him on the manifest horizon,
24
وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ wa mā huwa `alal-ghaybi biḍanīn and he is not miserly concerning the Unseen.
25
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ wa mā huwa biqawli shayṭānin rajīm And it is not the speech of an outcast Satan.
26
فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ fa-ayna tadh-habūn So where are you going?
27
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ in huwa illā dhikrul lil`ālamīn It is just a reminder for all the nations,
28
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ liman shā-a minkum an yastaqīm for those of you who wish to walk straight;
29
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ wa mā tashā-ūna illā an yashā-allāhu rabbul `ālamīn but you will not wish unless it is wished by Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
