بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ idhash shamsu kuwwirat WHEN THE SUN is folded up,
2
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ wa idhan nujūmun-kadarat The stars turn dim and scatter,
3
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ wa idhal jibālu suyyirat The mountains made to move,
4
وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ wa idhal `ishāru `uṭṭilat The ten-month pregnant female camels are abandoned,
5
وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ wa idhal wuḥūshu ḥushirat The wild beasts stampede on the run,
6
وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ wa idhal biḥāru sujjirat When the oceans surge and swell,
7
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ wa idhan nufūsu zuwwijat When souls are reunited (with the bodies)
8
وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ wa idhal maw-ū-datu su-ilat And the little girl buried alive is asked
9
بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ bi-ayyi dhanbin qutilat For what crime she was put to death;
10
وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ wa idhaṣ ṣuḥufu nushirat When the ledgers are laid open,
11
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ wa idhas samā-u kushiṭat The curtain drawn back from the skies,
12
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ wa idhal jaḥīmu su``irat When Hell is set ablaze,
13
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ wa idhal jannatu uzlifat And Paradise brought near,
14
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ `alimat nafsun mā aḥḍarat (Then) every soul will know what it had prepared (for itself).
15
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ falā uqsimu bil khunnas So, I call the receding stars to witness,
16
ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ al-jawāril kunnas The planets withdrawing into themselves,
17
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ wal layli idhā `as`as The closing night,
18
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ waṣ ṣubḥi idhā tanaffas The rising dawn,
19
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ innahu laqawlu rasūlin karīm That this is indeed the word of an honoured Messenger,
20
ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ dhī quwwatin `inda dhil `arshi makīn Full of power, well-established (in position) with the Lord and Master of the Throne,
21
مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ muṭā`in thamma amīn Obeyed and worthy there of trust.
22
وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ wa mā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūn Your companion is not mad.
23
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ walaqad ra-āhu bil-ufuqil mubīn He had surely seen Him on the clear horizon.
24
وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ wa mā huwa `alal-ghaybi biḍanīn He is not chary of making public what is unknown.
25
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ wa mā huwa biqawli shayṭānin rajīm This is not the utterance of an accursed devil.
26
فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ fa-ayna tadh-habūn So whither do you stray?
27
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ in huwa illā dhikrul lil`ālamīn This is a reminder for all the peoples of the world,
28
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ liman shā-a minkum an yastaqīm For those of you who desire to walk the path that is straight,
29
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ wa mā tashā-ūna illā an yashā-allāhu rabbul `ālamīn Though you cannot desire except as God will, the Lord of all the worlds.
