Abasa (#80)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ `abasa watawallā He frowned and turned away
2
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ an jā-ahul-a`mā when the blind man approached him.
3
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ wa mā yudrīka la`allahu yazzakkā And how do you know, maybe he would purify himself,
4
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ aw yadhhakkaru fatanfa`ahudh dhikrā or take admonition, and the admonition would benefit him!
5
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ammā manis-taghnā But as for someone who is wealthy,
6
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ fa-anta lahu taṣaddā you attend to him,
7
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ wa mā `alayka allā yazzakkā though you are not liable if he does not purify himself.
8
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ wa-ammā man jā-aka yas`ā But as for someone who comes hurrying to you,
9
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ wahuwa yakhshā while he fears [Allah],
10
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ fa-anta `anhu talahhā you are neglectful of him.
11
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ kallā innahā tadhkirah No indeed! These [verses of the Quran ] are a reminder
12
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ faman shā-a dhakarah —so let anyone who wishes remember—
13
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ fī ṣuḥufin mukarramah in honoured scriptures,
14
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ marfū`atim muṭahharah exalted and purified,
15
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ bi-aydī safarah in the hands of envoys,
16
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ kirāmin bararah noble and pious.
17
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ qutilal-insānu mā akfarah Perish man! How ungrateful is he!
18
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ min ayyi shay-in khalaqah From what did He create him?
19
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ min nuṭfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah He created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid; then proportioned him.
20
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ thummas sabīla yassarah Then He made the way easy for him;
21
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ thumma amātahu fa-aqbarah then He made him die and buried him;
22
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ thumma idhā shā-a ansharah and then, when He wished, resurrected him.
23
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarah No indeed! He has not yet carried out what He has commanded him.
24
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ falyanẓuril-insānu ilā ṭa`āmih Let man consider his food:
25
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا annā ṣababnal mā-a ṣabbā We pour down plenteous water [from the sky],
26
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا thumma shaqaqnal-arḍa shaqqā then We split the earth making fissures in it
27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا fa-anbatnā fīhā ḥabbā and make the grain grow in it,
28
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا wa`inaban waqaḍbā as well as vines and vegetables,
29
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا wazaytūnan wanakhlā olives and date palms,
30
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا waḥadā-iqa ghulbā and densely-planted gardens,
31
وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا wafākihatan wa-abbā fruits and pastures,
32
مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ matā`al lakum wali-an`āmikum as a sustenance for you and your livestock.
33
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ fa-idhā jā-atiṣ ṣākhhah So when the deafening Cry comes—
34
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ yawma yafirrul mar-u min akhīh the day when a man will evade his brother,
35
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ wa-ummihi wa-abīh his mother and his father,
36
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ waṣāḥibatihi wabanīh his spouse and his sons—
37
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ likullim-ri-in minhum yawma-idhin sha-nun yughnīh each of them will have a task to keep him preoccupied on that day.
38
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ wujūhun yawma-idhin musfirah Some faces will be bright on that day,
39
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ḍāḥikatun mustabshirah laughing and joyous,
40
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ wawujūhun yawma-idhin `alayhā ghabarah and some faces on that day will be covered with dust,
41
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ tarhaquhā qatarah overcast with gloom.
42
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ ulā-ika humul kafaratul fajarah It is they who are the faithless, the vicious.
