بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
`abasa watawallā
HE FROWNED AND turned away,
2
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ
an jā-ahul-a`mā
Because a blind man came to him.
3
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
wa mā yudrīka la`allahu yazzakkā
What made you think that he will not grow in virtue,
4
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ
aw yadhhakkaru fatanfa`ahudh dhikrā
Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him?
5
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ
ammā manis-taghnā
As for him who is not in want of any thing,
6
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
fa-anta lahu taṣaddā
You pay full attention,
7
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
wa mā `alayka allā yazzakkā
Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness).
8
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
wa-ammā man jā-aka yas`ā
As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness),
9
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ
wahuwa yakhshā
And is also fearful (of God),
10
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
fa-anta `anhu talahhā
You neglect.
11
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ
kallā innahā tadhkirah
Assuredly this is a reminder
12
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
faman shā-a dhakarah
For any one who desires to bear it in mind,
13
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
fī ṣuḥufin mukarramah
(Contained) in honoured pages,
14
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ
marfū`atim muṭahharah
Exalted and holy,
15
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ
bi-aydī safarah
In the hands of scribes
16
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ
kirāmin bararah
Noble and pious.
17
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ
qutilal-insānu mā akfarah
Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he!
18
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
min ayyi shay-in khalaqah
Of what substance God created him?
19
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
min nuṭfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah
From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him,
20
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
thummas sabīla yassarah
Then made his passage easy (at birth);
21
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ
thumma amātahu fa-aqbarah
He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave.
22
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
thumma idhā shā-a ansharah
Then He will raise him up again when He please.
23
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarah
But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him.
24
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
falyanẓuril-insānu ilā ṭa`āmih
Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food.
25
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا
annā ṣababnal mā-a ṣabbā
We poured down rain abundantly,
26
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا
thumma shaqaqnal-arḍa shaqqā
Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination)
27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
fa-anbatnā fīhā ḥabbā
And We made corn grow,
28
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا
wa`inaban waqaḍbā
And grapes and herbage,
29
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا
wazaytūnan wanakhlā
Olives and dates,
30
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا
waḥadā-iqa ghulbā
Orchards thick with trees,
31
وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
wafākihatan wa-abbā
And fruits and fodder:
32
مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ
matā`al lakum wali-an`āmikum
A provision for you and your cattle.
33
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
fa-idhā jā-atiṣ ṣākhhah
But when the great calamity comes
34
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ
yawma yafirrul mar-u min akhīh
Man will fly from his brother,
35
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
wa-ummihi wa-abīh
Mother and father,
36
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
waṣāḥibatihi wabanīh
As well as his wife and children.
37
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
likullim-ri-in minhum yawma-idhin sha-nun yughnīh
Each man will have enough cares that day.
38
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ
wujūhun yawma-idhin musfirah
Many faces will that day be bright,
39
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
ḍāḥikatun mustabshirah
Laughing and full of joy,
40
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ
wawujūhun yawma-idhin `alayhā ghabarah
And many will be dust-begrimed,
41
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
tarhaquhā qatarah
Covered with the blackness (of shame):
42
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ
ulā-ika humul kafaratul fajarah
They will be the unbelievers, transgressors.
