بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ yā-ayyuhal muzzammil O YOU ENWRAPPED in the cloak (of Prophethood),
2
قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا qumil layla illā qalīlā Keep watch all the night except some,
3
نِّصْفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا niṣfahu awin-quṣ minhu qalīlā A half of it or a little less
4
أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا aw zid `alayhi warattilil qur-āna tartīlā Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly.
5
إِنَّا سَنُلْقِى عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا innā sanulqī `alayka qawlan thaqīlā We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity).
6
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ هِىَ أَشَدُّ وَطْـًٔا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا inna nāshi-atal layli hiya ashaddu waṭ-an wa-aqwamu qīlā Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling.
7
إِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا inna laka fin nahāri sabḥan ṭawīlā Indeed during the day you have a long schedule of occupations.
8
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا wadhkuris-ma rabbika watabattal ilayhi tabtīlā But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him.
9
رَّبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا rabbul mashriqi wal maghribi lā ilāha illā huwa fattakhidh-hu wakīlā He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector.
10
وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا waṣbir `alā mā yaqūlūna wāhjurhum hajran jamīlā Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them.
11
وَذَرْنِى وَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُو۟لِى ٱلنَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا wadharnī wal mukadhhibīna ulin na`mati wa mahhilhum qalīlā Leave those to Me who deny, the lovers of ease and comfort; and bear with them for a while.
12
إِنَّ لَدَيْنَآ أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا inna ladaynā ankālan wajaḥīmā Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace,
13
وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا waṭa`āman dhā ghuṣṣatin wa`adhāban alīmā And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment
14
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا yawma tarjuful-arḍu wal jibālu wakānatil jibālu kathīban mahīlā On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand.
15
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَـٰهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا innā arsalnā ilaykum rasūlan shāhidan `alaykum kamā arsalnā ilā fir`awna rasūlā We have sent an Apostle to you as a witness against you, as We had sent an apostle to the Pharaoh.
16
فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا fa`aṣā fir`awnur rasūla fa-akhadhnāhu akhdhan wabīlā But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment.
17
فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَ شِيبًا fakayfa tattaqūna in kafartum yawman yaj`alul wildāna shībā How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary?
18
ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرٌۢ بِهِۦ ۚ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَفْعُولًا as-samā-u munfaṭirun bih ۚ kāna wa`duhu maf`ūlā The heavens itself will be rent asunder (on that day). His promise is bound to be fulfilled.
19
إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا inna hādhihi tadhkirah ۖ faman shā-at-takhadha ilā rabbihi sabīlā Verily this is a reminder. So let him who desires take the way to his Lord.
20
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَىِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةٌ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۚ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا ۚ وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌۢ inna rabbaka ya`lamu annaka taqūmu adnā min thuluthayil layli waniṣfahu wathuluthahu waṭā-ifatun minal ladhīna ma`ak ۚ wallāhu yuqaddirul layla wan nahār ۚ `alima an lan tuḥṣūhu fatāba `alaykum ۖ faqra-ū mā tayassara minal qur-ān ۚ `alima an sayakūnu minkum marḍā wa-ākharūna yaḍribūna fil-arḍi yabtaghūna min faḍlillāhi wa-ākharūna yuqātilūna fī sabīlillāh ۖ faqra-ū mā tayassara minh ۚ wa-aqīmuṣ ṣalāta wa-ātuz zakāta wa-aqriḍullāha qarḍan ḥasanā ۚ wa mā tuqaddimū li-anfusikum min khayrin tajidūhu `indallāhi huwa khayran wa-a`ẓama ajrā ۚ wastaghfirullāh ۖ innallāha ghafūrun raḥīm Your Lord surely knows that you are occupied with your devotions for nearly two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or one-third of it, as do many others with you. Yet God prescribes the measure of night and day. He knows you cannot calculate it, and so turns to you in benevolence. So recite as much of the Qur'an as you can easily. He knows some among you will be sick, and some will be travelling over the earth in search of the bounty of God, and some fighting in the way of God. So read as much from it as you can easily, and be firm in devotion, pay the zakat, and lend a goodly loan to God. And what you send for yourself of the good, you will find it with God better and greater in reward. So ask for God's forgiveness. Indeed God is forgiving and kind.
