وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ wa mā adrāka mal ḥāqqah What do you comprehend by the concrete reality?
4
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌۢ بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ kadhhabat thamūdu wa`ādun bil qāri`ah The Thamud and 'Ad denied the consequential calamity.
5
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ fa-ammā thamūdu fa-uhlikū biṭ ṭāghiyah So destroyed were the Thamud by a storm of thunder and lightning;
6
وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ wa-ammā `ādun fa-uhlikū birīḥin ṣarṣarin `ātiyah And the 'Ad were destroyed by the furious cold blast of roaring wind

سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَـٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى ٱلْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ sakhharahā `alayhim sab`a layālin wathamāniyata ayyāmin ḥusūman fataral qawma fīhā ṣar`ā ka-annahum a`jāzu nakhlin khāwiyah Which He sent to assail them for seven nights and eight days running. You should have seen the people prostrate like the decayed trunks of date-palm trees.
8
فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةٍ fahal tarā lahum min bāqiyah Do you see any trace of them?
9
وَجَآءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُ بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ wajā-a fir`awnu wa man qablahu wal mu-tafikātu bil khāṭi-ah Then came the Pharaoh, and those before him whose habitations were overthrown while they were committing crimes.
10
فَعَصَوْا۟ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةً رَّابِيَةً fa`aṣaw rasūla rabbihim fa-akhadhahum akhdhatan rābiyah When they disobeyed the apostle of their Lord He seized them with an overwhelming punishment.
11
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلْمَآءُ حَمَلْنَـٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْجَارِيَةِ innā lammā ṭaghal mā-u ḥamalnākum fil jāriyah When the water rose in flood, We bore you in the ark,
12

13
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ fa-idhā nufikha fiṣ ṣūri nafkhatun wāḥidah When the single blast is sounded on the trumpet,
14
وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَٰحِدَةً waḥumilatil-arḍu wal jibālu fadukkatā dakkatan wāḥidah And the earth and mountains heaved and crushed to powder with one levelling blow,
15
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ fayawma-idhin waqa`atil wāqi`ah On that Day will come what is to come.

17
وَٱلْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرْجَآئِهَا ۚ وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَـٰنِيَةٌ wal malaku `alā arjā-ihā ۚ wayaḥmilu `arsha rabbika fawqahum yawma-idhin thamāniyah On its fringes will be angels, eight of them, bearing their Lord's throne aloft.
18

25
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَـٰبِيَهْ wa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu bishimālihi fayaqūlu yālaytanī lam ūta kitābiyah But whosoever gets his ledger in his left hand, will say: "Would that I were never given my ledger,
26
وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهْ walam adri mā ḥisābiyah And not known my account!
27
يَـٰلَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ yālaytahā kānatil qāḍiyah I wish death had put an end to me.
28
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنِّى مَالِيَهْ ۜ mā aghnā `annī māliyah ۜ Of no use was even my wealth.
29
هَلَكَ عَنِّى سُلْطَـٰنِيَهْ halaka `annī sulṭāniyah Vanished has my power from me."
30
خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ khudhūhu faghullūh "Seize him and manacle him,

33
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ innahu kāna lā yu-minu billāhil `aẓīm He did not believe in God the supreme,
34
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ walā yaḥuḍḍu `alā ṭa`āmil miskīn Nor urged others to feed the poor.
35
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ ٱلْيَوْمَ هَـٰهُنَا حَمِيمٌ falaysa lahul yawma hāhunā ḥamīm That is why he has no friend today,
36
وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ walā ṭa`āmun illā min ghislīn Nor food other than suppuration (filth)
37
لَّا يَأْكُلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَ lā ya-kuluhu illal-khāṭi-ūn Which none but the hellish eat."

41
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تُؤْمِنُونَ wa mā huwa biqawli shā`ir ۚ qalīlan mā tu-minūn And not the word of a poet. How little is it that you believe!
42
وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ walā biqawli kāhin ۚ qalīlan mā tadhakkarūn Nor is it the word of a soothsayer. Little is it that you reflect!
43
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ tanzīlun min rabbil `ālamīn It has been sent down by the Lord of all the worlds.
44
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ walaw taqawwala `alaynā ba`ḍal-aqāwyl Had he attributed falsely any words to Us,
45
لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِٱلْيَمِينِ la-akhadhnā minhu bil yamīn We would have seized him by his right hand,

49
وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ wa innā lana`lamu anna minkum mukadhhibīn We certainly know that some among you do deny it.
