6

16
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ idh yaghshas sidrata mā yaghshā When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over;
17
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ mā zāghal baṣaru wa mā ṭaghā Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds.
18
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ laqad ra-ā min āyāti rabbihil kubrā Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord.
19
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ afara aytumullāta wal `uzzā Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza,
20
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ wa manātath thālithatal-ukhrā And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)?
21
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ alakumudh dhakaru walahul-unthā Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him?
22
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā This is certainly an unjust apportioning.
23
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ in hiya illā asmā-un sammaytumūhā antum wa-ābā-ukum mā anzalallāhu bihā min sulṭān ۚ in yattabi`ūna illaẓ ẓanna wa mā tahwal-anfus ۖ walaqad jā-ahum min rabbihimul hudā These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord.
24
أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ am lilinsāni mā tamannā Can ever man get what he desires?
25
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ falillāhil-ākhiratu wal-ūlā To God belong the End and the Beginning.
26
وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ wakam min malakin fis samāwāti lā tughnī shafā`atuhum shay-an illā min ba`di an ya-dhanallāhu liman yashā-u wayarḍā Many as the angels be in heaven their intercession will not avail in the least without God's permission for whomsoever He please and approve.
27
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ innal ladhīna lā yu-minūna bil-ākhirati layusammūnal malā-ikata tasmiyatal-unthā Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give the angels names of females.
28
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا wa mā lahum bihi min `il-m ۖ in yattabi`ūna illaẓ ẓann ۖ wa innaẓ ẓanna lā yughnī minal ḥaqqi shay-ā Yet they have no knowledge of this, and follow nothing but conjecture, but conjecture cannot replace the truth.
29
فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا fa-a`riḍ `an man tawallā `an dhikrinā walam yurid illal-ḥayātad dunyā So you turn away from him who turns away from Our rememberance and wants nothing but the life of this world:
30
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ dhālika mablaghuhum minal `il-m ۚ inna rabbaka huwa a`lamu biman ḍalla `an sabīlihi wahuwa a`lamu bimanih-tadā This is the farthest limit of their knowledge. Surely your Lord alone knows best who has strayed away from the path and who has come to guidance.
31
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى walillāhi mā fis samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍi liyajziyal ladhīna asā-ū bimā `amilū wayajziyal ladhīna aḥsanū bil ḥusnā To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, that He may requite those who do evil, in accordance with their deeds, and those who do good with good.
32
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ alladhīna yajtanibūna kabā-iral-ithmi wal fawāḥisha illallamam ۚ inna rabbaka wāsi`ul maghfirah ۚ huwa a`lamu bikum idh ansha-akum minal-arḍi wa idh antum ajinnatun fī buṭūni ummahātikum ۖ falā tuzakkū anfusakum ۖ huwa a`lamu bimanit-taqā As for those who avoid the greater sins and shameful acts, except minor trespasses, your Lord's forgiveness surely has great amplitude. He is fully knowledgeable of you as He produced you from the earth, and since you were a foetus in your mother's womb. So do not assert your goodness; he is better who takes heed and preserves himself.
33
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ afara aytal ladhī tawallā Have you seen him who turns his back,
34
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ wa-a`ṭā qalīlan wa-akdā Who gives but little, and is niggardly?
35
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ a`indahu `il-mul ghaybi fahuwa yarā Has he knowledge of the Unknown that he perceives everything?
36
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ am lam yunabba-bimā fī ṣuḥufi mūsā Has he not heard what is contained in the Book of Moses,
37
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ wa ibrāhīmal ladhī waffā And of Abraham who fulfilled his trust? --
38
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ allā taziru wāziratun wizra ukhrā That no one who carries a burden bears another's load;
39
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ wa-an laysa lilinsāni illā mā sa`ā That a man receives but only that for which he strives;
40
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ wa-anna sa`yahu sawfa yurā That his endeavours will be judged,
41
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ thumma yujzāhul jazā-al-awfā And only then will he receive his recompense in full;
42
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ wa-anna ilā rabbikal muntahā And that to your Lord is your returning;
43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ wa-annahu huwa aḍ-ḥaka wa-abkā That it is He who makes you happy and morose,
44
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا wa-annahu huwa amāta wa-aḥyā And He who ordains death and life;
45
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ wa-annahu khalaqaz zawjaynidh dhakara wal-unthā That He created pairs, male and female,
46
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ min nuṭfatin idhā tumnā From a drop of semen when emitted;
47
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ wa-anna `alayhin nash-atal-ukhrā That the second creation is incumbent on Him;
48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ wa-annahu huwa aghnā wa-aqnā That it is He who makes you rich and contented;
49
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ wa-annahu huwa rabbush shi`rā That He is the Lord of Sirius;
50
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ wa-annahu ahlaka `ādanl-ūlā That it was He who destroyed the 'Ad of old,
51
وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ wathamūda famā abqā And Thamud, and did not leave them,
52
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ waqawma nūḥin min qabl ۖ innahum kānū hum aẓlama wa-aṭghā Like the people of Noah before them, who were surely oppressors and rebellious;
53
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ wal mu-tafikata ahwā And He overthrew the Cities of the Plain,
54
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ faghashhāhā mā ghashhā So that they were covered over by what they were covered over.
55
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ fabi-ayyi ālā-i rabbika tatamārā How many favours of your Lord will you then deny?
56
هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ hādhā nadhīrun minan nudhuril-ūlā He who warns you is one of the warners of old.
57
