تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ tilka āyātul kitābil mubīn These are the verses of the illuminating Book.
3
نَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْكَ مِن نَّبَإِ مُوسَىٰ وَفِرْعَوْنَ بِٱلْحَقِّ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ natlū `alayka min naba-i mūsā wafir`awna bil ḥaqqi liqawmiy yu-minūn We narrate to you from the history of Moses and Pharaoh in all verity, for those who believe.
4
إِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ عَلَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلَ أَهْلَهَا شِيَعًا يَسْتَضْعِفُ طَآئِفَةً مِّنْهُمْ يُذَبِّحُ أَبْنَآءَهُمْ وَيَسْتَحْىِۦ نِسَآءَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ inna fir`awna `alā fil-arḍi waja`ala ahlahā shiya`an yastaḍ`ifu ṭā-ifatan minhum yudhabbiḥu abnā-ahum wayastaḥyī nisā-ahum ۚ innahu kāna minal mufsidīn The Pharaoh had become high and mighty in the land, and divided the people into different classes, and impoverished one class, slaying its males and sparing its women, for he was indeed a tyrant.
5
وَنُرِيدُ أَن نَّمُنَّ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتُضْعِفُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَنَجْعَلَهُمْ أَئِمَّةً وَنَجْعَلَهُمُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ wanurīdu an namunna `alal ladhīnas-tuḍ`ifū fil-arḍi wanaj`alahum a-immatan wanaj`alahumul wārithīn We wished to favour those who were weak in the land and make them leaders and heirs,
6
وَنُمَكِّنَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَنُرِىَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ وَجُنُودَهُمَا مِنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَحْذَرُونَ wanumakkina lahum fil-arḍi wanuriya fir`awna wahāmāna wajunūdahumā minhum mā kānū yaḥdharūn And establish them in the country; and to make the Pharaoh, Haman and their hordes beware of what they feared from them.
7
وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَرْضِعِيهِ ۖ فَإِذَا خِفْتِ عَلَيْهِ فَأَلْقِيهِ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَلَا تَخَافِى وَلَا تَحْزَنِىٓ ۖ إِنَّا رَآدُّوهُ إِلَيْكِ وَجَاعِلُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ wa-awḥaynā ilā ummi mūsā an arḍi`īh ۖ fa-idhā khifti `alayhi fa-alqīhi fil yammi walā takhāfī walā taḥzanī ۖ innā rāddūhu ilayki wajā`ilūhu minal mursalīn So We conveyed to the mother of Moses: "Suckle him. If you are afraid for him, cast him in the river without any fear or regret, for We shall restore him to you, and make him an apostle."
8
فَٱلْتَقَطَهُۥٓ ءَالُ فِرْعَوْنَ لِيَكُونَ لَهُمْ عَدُوًّا وَحَزَنًا ۗ إِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ وَجُنُودَهُمَا كَانُوا۟ خَـٰطِـِٔينَ fal taqaṭahu ālu fir`awna liyakūna lahum `aduwwan waḥazanā ۗ inna fir`awna wahāmāna wajunūdahumā kānū khāṭi-īn Then he was picked up by the family of Pharaoh (unaware) that he would become their enemy and a cause for regret. Surely the Pharaoh, Haman and their hordes were habitual sinners.
9
وَقَالَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُ فِرْعَوْنَ قُرَّتُ عَيْنٍ لِّى وَلَكَ ۖ لَا تَقْتُلُوهُ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَنفَعَنَآ أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُۥ وَلَدًا وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ waqālatim-ra-atu fir`awna qurratu `aynin lī walak ۖ lā taqtulūhu `asā an yanfa`anā aw nattakhidhahu waladan wahum lā yash`urūn The Pharaoh's wife said: "He will be a comfort to me and to you. Do not kill him. He may well be of some advantage to us, or we may adopt him as a son." They were not aware (of what the future held in store).
10
وَأَصْبَحَ فُؤَادُ أُمِّ مُوسَىٰ فَـٰرِغًا ۖ إِن كَادَتْ لَتُبْدِى بِهِۦ لَوْلَآ أَن رَّبَطْنَا عَلَىٰ قَلْبِهَا لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ wa-aṣbaḥa fu-ādu ummi mūsā fārighā ۖ in kādat latubdī bihi lawlā an rabaṭnā `alā qalbihā litakūna minal mu-minīn The mother of Moses was perturbed in the morning. Had We not strengthened her heart to remain a believer she had almost given him away.
11
وَقَالَتْ لِأُخْتِهِۦ قُصِّيهِ ۖ فَبَصُرَتْ بِهِۦ عَن جُنُبٍ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ waqālat li-ukhtihi quṣṣīh ۖ fabaṣurat bihi `an junubin wahum lā yash`urūn She told his sister: "Follow him." So she kept an eye on him from a distance, unbeknown to them.
12
وَحَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ ٱلْمَرَاضِعَ مِن قَبْلُ فَقَالَتْ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ يَكْفُلُونَهُۥ لَكُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُۥ نَـٰصِحُونَ waḥarramnā `alayhil marāḍi`a min qablu faqālat hal adullukum `alā ahli baytiy yakfulūnahu lakum wahum lahu nāṣiḥūn We made (Moses) refuse a wet nurse. So his sister said: "Should I tell you of a household that could bring him up for you and take care of him?"
13
فَرَدَدْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّهِۦ كَىْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ وَلِتَعْلَمَ أَنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ faradadnāhu ilā ummihi kay taqarra `aynuhā walā taḥzana walita`lama anna wa`dallāhi ḥaqqun walākinna aktharahum lā ya`lamūn Thus We restored him to his mother that she may be tranquil and not grieve, and know that the promise of God is true, though most men do not know.
14
وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ وَٱسْتَوَىٰٓ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ walammā balagha ashuddahu wastawā ātaynāhu ḥukman wa`il-mā ۚ wakadhālika najzil muḥsinīn When he had grown up to full maturity, We gave him wisdom and knowledge. Thus do We recompense the doers of good.
15
وَدَخَلَ ٱلْمَدِينَةَ عَلَىٰ حِينِ غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ أَهْلِهَا فَوَجَدَ فِيهَا رَجُلَيْنِ يَقْتَتِلَانِ هَـٰذَا مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ وَهَـٰذَا مِنْ عَدُوِّهِۦ ۖ فَٱسْتَغَـٰثَهُ ٱلَّذِى مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ عَلَى ٱلَّذِى مِنْ عَدُوِّهِۦ فَوَكَزَهُۥ مُوسَىٰ فَقَضَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ۖ قَالَ هَـٰذَا مِنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ عَدُوٌّ مُّضِلٌّ مُّبِينٌ wadakhalal-madīnata `alā ḥīni ghaflatim min ahlihā fawajada fīhā rajulayni yaqtatilāni hādhā min shī`atihi wahādhā min `aduwwih ۖ fastaghāthahul ladhī min shī`atihi `alal ladhī min `aduwwihi fawakazahu mūsā faqaḍā `alayh ۖ qāla hādhā min `amalish shayṭān ۖ innahu `aduwwun muḍillun mubīn He came to the city when the people were in a care-free mood, and saw two men quarrelling, one belonging to his community, the other to his enemies. The man who belonged to his community appealed for help against the one who belonged to the enemies. Moses struck him a blow with his fist and finished him off. "This is of Satan's doing," he said. "He is certainly an enemy and a corrupter."
16
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِى فَٱغْفِرْ لِى فَغَفَرَ لَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ qāla rabbi innī ẓalamtu nafsī faghfir lī faghafara lah ۚ innahu huwal ghafūrur raḥīm "O Lord," he prayed, "I have done wrong, forgive me." And God forgave him. Verily He is forgiving and kind.
17
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَىَّ فَلَنْ أَكُونَ ظَهِيرًا لِّلْمُجْرِمِينَ qāla rabbi bimā an`amta `alayya falan akūna ẓahīral lil-mujrimīn (Moses) said: "O Lord, as You have been gracious to me I will never aid the guilty."
18
فَأَصْبَحَ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ خَآئِفًا يَتَرَقَّبُ فَإِذَا ٱلَّذِى ٱسْتَنصَرَهُۥ بِٱلْأَمْسِ يَسْتَصْرِخُهُۥ ۚ قَالَ لَهُۥ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّكَ لَغَوِىٌّ مُّبِينٌ fa-aṣbaḥa fil madīnati khā-ifan yataraqqabu fa-idhal ladhis-tanṣarahu bil-amsi yastaṣrikhuh ۚ qāla lahu mūsā innaka laghawiyyun mubīn In the morning he came to the city, fearful and hesitant. Just then he who had asked him for help the day before called out for help (again). "You are indeed a meddlesome fellow," Moses said to him.
19
فَلَمَّآ أَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يَبْطِشَ بِٱلَّذِى هُوَ عَدُوٌّ لَّهُمَا قَالَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ أَتُرِيدُ أَن تَقْتُلَنِى كَمَا قَتَلْتَ نَفْسًۢا بِٱلْأَمْسِ ۖ إِن تُرِيدُ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَ جَبَّارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا تُرِيدُ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ falammā an arāda an yabṭisha bil ladhī huwa `aduwwul lahumā qāla yāmūsā aturīdu an taqtulanī kamā qatalta nafsan bil-ams ۖ in turīdu illā an takūna jabbāran fil-arḍi wa mā turīdu an takūna minal muṣliḥīn Then as he was about to lay hands on the one who was their common enemy, he cried out: "O Moses, do you want to kill me as you killed that person yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and no peacemaker."
20
وَجَآءَ رَجُلٌ مِّنْ أَقْصَا ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْعَىٰ قَالَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّ ٱلْمَلَأَ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ فَٱخْرُجْ إِنِّى لَكَ مِنَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ wajā-a rajulun min aqṣal madīnati yas`ā qāla yāmūsā innal mala-a ya-tamirūna bika liyaqtulūka fakhruj innī laka minan nāṣiḥīn There came a man running from the other part of the city. "O Moses," he said, "the chiefs are deliberating to kill you. Go away from the city. I wish you well."
21
فَخَرَجَ مِنْهَا خَآئِفًا يَتَرَقَّبُ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ نَجِّنِى مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ fakharaja minhā khā-ifan yataraqqab ۖ qāla rabbi najjinī minal qawmiẓ ẓālimīn So he left the city, fearful and hesitant, (and) prayed: "O Lord, deliver me from these wicked people."
22
وَلَمَّا تَوَجَّهَ تِلْقَآءَ مَدْيَنَ قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَن يَهْدِيَنِى سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ walammā tawajjaha tilqā-a madyana qāla `asā rabbī an yahdiyanī sawā-as sabīl Then as he turned his face to Midian, he said: "Maybe my Lord will show me the right way."
23
وَلَمَّا وَرَدَ مَآءَ مَدْيَنَ وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِ أُمَّةً مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْقُونَ وَوَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمُ ٱمْرَأَتَيْنِ تَذُودَانِ ۖ قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُمَا ۖ قَالَتَا لَا نَسْقِى حَتَّىٰ يُصْدِرَ ٱلرِّعَآءُ ۖ وَأَبُونَا شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ walammā warada mā-a madyana wajada `alayhi ummatan minan nāsi yasqūna wawajada min dūnihimum-ra-atayni tadhūdān ۖ qāla mā khaṭbukumā ۖ qālatā lā nasqī ḥattā yuṣdirar ri`ā-u ۖ wa-abūnā shaykhun kabīr And when he came to the waters of Midian he found a crowd of people watering (their flocks), and saw two maidens holding back (their cattle). He asked: "What is the trouble with you?" They said: "We cannot water our flock till the shepherds have driven away theirs, and our father is a very old man."
24
فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى لِمَآ أَنزَلْتَ إِلَىَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ fasaqā lahumā thumma tawallā ilaẓ ẓilli faqāla rabbi innī limā anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqīr So he watered (their flock), and moved into the shade and prayed: "My Lord, I have need of whatever good you send me."
25
فَجَآءَتْهُ إِحْدَىٰهُمَا تَمْشِى عَلَى ٱسْتِحْيَآءٍ قَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبِى يَدْعُوكَ لِيَجْزِيَكَ أَجْرَ مَا سَقَيْتَ لَنَا ۚ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُۥ وَقَصَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَصَصَ قَالَ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ نَجَوْتَ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ fajā-at hu iḥdāhumā tamshī `alas-tiḥyā-in qālat inna abī yad`ūka liyajziyaka ajra mā saqayta lanā ۚ falammā jā-ahu waqaṣṣa `alayhil qaṣaṣa qāla lā takhaf ۖ najawta minal qawmiẓ ẓālimīn Then one of the (maidens) came to him walking bashfully, (and) said: "My father invites you that he may repay you for having watered our flock." So, when (Moses) came to him and told him his story, he said: "Have no fear. You have escaped from the wicked people."
26
قَالَتْ إِحْدَىٰهُمَا يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱسْتَـْٔجِرْهُ ۖ إِنَّ خَيْرَ مَنِ ٱسْتَـْٔجَرْتَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْأَمِينُ qālat iḥdāhumā yā-abatis-ta-jirh ۖ inna khayra manis-ta-jartal qawiyyul-amīn Said one of the maidens: "O father, employ him. Surely the best (man) to employ is one who is strong and honest."
27
قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُنكِحَكَ إِحْدَى ٱبْنَتَىَّ هَـٰتَيْنِ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تَأْجُرَنِى ثَمَـٰنِىَ حِجَجٍ ۖ فَإِنْ أَتْمَمْتَ عَشْرًا فَمِنْ عِندِكَ ۖ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَيْكَ ۚ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ qāla innī urīdu an unkiḥaka iḥdab-natayya hātayni `alā an ta-juranī thamāniya ḥijaj ۖ fa-in atmamta `ashran famin `indik ۖ wa mā urīdu an ashuqqa `alayk ۚ satajidunī in shā-allāhu minaṣ ṣāliḥīn He said: "I would like to marry one of these two daughters of mine to you if you agree to work for me on hire for eight years. And if you stay on for ten, it is up to you. I do not wish to impose any hardship on you. God willing you will find me a man of honour."
28
قَالَ ذَٰلِكَ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكَ ۖ أَيَّمَا ٱلْأَجَلَيْنِ قَضَيْتُ فَلَا عُدْوَٰنَ عَلَىَّ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌ qāla dhālika baynī wabaynak ۖ ayyamal-ajalayni qaḍaytu falā `udwāna `alayy ۖ wallāhu `alā mā naqūlu wakīl (Moses) said: "This is (agreed) between you and me. Whichever term I fulfil, no injustice will be done to me. God is witness to our agreement."
29
فَلَمَّا قَضَىٰ مُوسَى ٱلْأَجَلَ وَسَارَ بِأَهْلِهِۦٓ ءَانَسَ مِن جَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ نَارًا قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ ٱمْكُثُوٓا۟ إِنِّىٓ ءَانَسْتُ نَارًا لَّعَلِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم مِّنْهَا بِخَبَرٍ أَوْ جَذْوَةٍ مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَصْطَلُونَ falammā qaḍā mūsal-ajala wasāra bi-ahlihi ānasa min jānibiṭ ṭūri nāran qāla li-ahlihim-kuthū innī ānastu nāral la`allī ātīkum minhā bikhabarin aw jadhwatim minan nāri la`allakum taṣṭalūn When Moses had fulfilled the term and was journeying with his family, he noticed a fire on the side of the mountain. "Wait here," he said to his family; "I have seen a fire. I may haply bring some news from there, or an ember that you may warm yourselves."
30
فَلَمَّآ أَتَىٰهَا نُودِىَ مِن شَـٰطِئِ ٱلْوَادِ ٱلْأَيْمَنِ فِى ٱلْبُقْعَةِ ٱلْمُبَـٰرَكَةِ مِنَ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ أَن يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ falammā atāhā nūdiya min shāṭi-il wādil-aymani fil buq`atil mubārakati minash shajarati an yāmūsā innī anallāhu rabbul `ālamīn When he drew near, a voice called out to him from the tree on the blessed spot on the right side of the valley: "O Moses, I am verily God, the Lord of all the worlds.
31
وَأَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهَا تَهْتَزُّ كَأَنَّهَا جَآنٌّ وَلَّىٰ مُدْبِرًا وَلَمْ يُعَقِّبْ ۚ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ أَقْبِلْ وَلَا تَخَفْ ۖ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْـَٔامِنِينَ wa-an alqi `aṣāk ۖ falammā ra-āhā tahtazzu ka-annahā jānnun wallā mudbiran walam yu`aqqib ۚ yāmūsā aqbil walā takhaf ۖ innaka minal-āminīn Throw down your staff." When he saw it wriggling like a serpent, he turned about and fled without turning. "O Moses, approach," (said the Voice), "and have no fear. You will be safe.
32
ٱسْلُكْ يَدَكَ فِى جَيْبِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَآءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوٓءٍ وَٱضْمُمْ إِلَيْكَ جَنَاحَكَ مِنَ ٱلرَّهْبِ ۖ فَذَٰنِكَ بُرْهَـٰنَانِ مِن رَّبِّكَ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ us-luk yadaka fī jaybika takhruj bayḍā-a min ghayri sū-in waḍmum ilayka janāḥaka minar rahb ۖ fadhānika burhānāni min rabbika ilā fir`awna wa mala-ih ۚ innahum kānū qawman fāsiqīn Put your hand inside your shirt. It will come out white without a tarnish of blame; and do not be perturbed or afraid. These are two proofs from your Lord for the Pharaoh and his nobles. They are certainly a rebellious people."
33
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى قَتَلْتُ مِنْهُمْ نَفْسًا فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقْتُلُونِ qāla rabbi innī qataltu minhum nafsan fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn He said: "O Lord, I have killed a man of theirs, and fear they would kill me.
34
وَأَخِى هَـٰرُونُ هُوَ أَفْصَحُ مِنِّى لِسَانًا فَأَرْسِلْهُ مَعِىَ رِدْءًا يُصَدِّقُنِىٓ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ wa-akhī hārūnu huwa afṣaḥu minnī lisānan fa-arsilhu ma`iya rid-an yuṣaddiqunī ۖ innī akhāfu an yukadhhibūn So send my brother Aaron with me as helper for he is more fluent than I with words, that he should affirm me, for I fear that they would call me a liar."
35
قَالَ سَنَشُدُّ عَضُدَكَ بِأَخِيكَ وَنَجْعَلُ لَكُمَا سُلْطَـٰنًا فَلَا يَصِلُونَ إِلَيْكُمَا ۚ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ أَنتُمَا وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكُمَا ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ qāla sanashuddu `aḍudaka bi-akhīka wanaj`alu lakumā sulṭānan falā yaṣilūna ilaykumā ۚ bi-āyātinā antumā wa manit-taba`akumal ghālibūn (And) God said: "We shall strengthen your arm with your brother, and give you power with Our signs and give you authority, so that they will not be able to harm you. Both of you and your followers will be victorious."
36
فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مُّوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا بَيِّنَـٰتٍ قَالُوا۟ مَا هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّفْتَرًى وَمَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِىٓ ءَابَآئِنَا ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ falammā jā-ahum mūsā bi-āyātinā bayyinātin qālū mā hādhā illā siḥrun muftaran wa mā sami`nā bihādhā fī ābā-inal-awwalīn But when Moses came to them with Our clear signs they said: "This is nothing but magic he has contrived, for we have not heard of this from our fathers of old."
37
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن جَآءَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ مِنْ عِندِهِۦ وَمَن تَكُونُ لَهُۥ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلدَّارِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ waqāla mūsā rabbī a`lamu biman jā-a bil hudā min `indihi wa man takūnu lahu `āqibatud dār ۖ innahu lā yufliḥuẓ ẓālimūn But Moses said: "My Lord knows well who has come with guidance from Him, and for whom is the guerdon of Paradise. But surely the wicked will not prosper."

وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَأُ مَا عَلِمْتُ لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرِى فَأَوْقِدْ لِى يَـٰهَـٰمَـٰنُ عَلَى ٱلطِّينِ فَٱجْعَل لِّى صَرْحًا لَّعَلِّىٓ أَطَّلِعُ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَـٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّى لَأَظُنُّهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ waqāla fir`awnu yā-ayyuhal mala-u mā `alimtu lakum min ilāhin ghayrī fa-awqid lī yāhāmānu `alaṭ ṭīni faj`al lī ṣarḥal la`allī aṭṭali`u ilā ilāhi mūsā wa innī la-aẓunnuhu minal kādhibīn The Pharaoh said: "O nobles, I am not aware of any other lord of yours but myself. So, O Haman, fire some clay (bricks) to build a tower for me that I may mount up (and see) the God of Moses; for I think he is a liar."
39
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ هُوَ وَجُنُودُهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا يُرْجَعُونَ wastakbara huwa wajunūduhu fil-arḍi bighayril ḥaqqi waẓannū annahum ilaynā lā yurja`ūn He and his soldiers had become arrogant in the land for no reason, and did not think that they have to come back to Us in the end.
40
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ ۖ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ fa-akhadhnāhu wajunūdahu fanabadhnāhum fil yamm ۖ fanẓur kayfa kāna `āqibatuẓ ẓālimīn So We seized him and his hordes and threw them into the sea. Behold then how was the end of the wicked!
41
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَدْعُونَ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ ۖ وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ لَا يُنصَرُونَ waja`alnāhum a-immatan yad`ūna ilan nār ۖ wayawmal qiyāmati lā yunṣarūn We made them the leaders of those who call to Hell; and on the Day of Judgement they will not be helped.
42
وَأَتْبَعْنَـٰهُمْ فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً ۖ وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ هُم مِّنَ ٱلْمَقْبُوحِينَ wa-atba`nāhum fī hādhihid dunyā la`nah ۖ wayawmal qiyāmati hum minal maqbūḥīn A curse lies upon them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be despised.
43
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَآ أَهْلَكْنَا ٱلْقُرُونَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ بَصَآئِرَ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ walaqad ātaynā mūsal kitāba min ba`di mā ahlaknal qurūnal-ūlā baṣā-ira linnāsi wahudan waraḥmatan la`allahum yatadhakkarūn After We had destroyed the earlier generations We gave Moses the Book as evidence for mankind, and a guidance and grace, so that they may remember.
44
وَمَا كُنتَ بِجَانِبِ ٱلْغَرْبِىِّ إِذْ قَضَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَى ٱلْأَمْرَ وَمَا كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ wa mā kunta bijānibil gharbiyyi idh qaḍaynā ilā mūsal-amra wa mā kunta minash shāhidīn You were not there on the western side (of Mount Sinai) when We gave the commandments to Moses, nor were you witness (to the event).
45
وَلَـٰكِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَا قُرُونًا فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْعُمُرُ ۚ وَمَا كُنتَ ثَاوِيًا فِىٓ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ تَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا وَلَـٰكِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ walākinnā ansha-nā qurūnan fataṭāwala `alayhimul `umur ۚ wa mā kunta thāwiyan fī ahli madyana tatlū `alayhim āyātinā walākinnā kunnā mursilīn We raised (many more) generations and prolonged their lives. You did not live with the people of Midian, nor recited to them Our revelations; but We kept on sending messengers.
46
وَمَا كُنتَ بِجَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ إِذْ نَادَيْنَا وَلَـٰكِن رَّحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّآ أَتَىٰهُم مِّن نَّذِيرٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ wa mā kunta bijānibiṭ ṭūri idh nādaynā walākin raḥmatan min rabbika litundhira qawman mā atāhum min nadhīrin min qablika la`allahum yatadhakkarūn You were not present on the side of Mount Sinai when We called. And all this (knowledge that you are given) is by the grace of your Lord so that you may warn a people to whom no admonisher had come before you, that they may take heed;
47
وَلَوْلَآ أَن تُصِيبَهُم مُّصِيبَةٌۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ فَيَقُولُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوْلَآ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَايَـٰتِكَ وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ walawlā an tuṣībahum muṣībatun bimā qaddamat aydīhim fayaqūlū rabbanā lawlā arsalta ilaynā rasūlan fanattabi`a āyātika wanakūna minal mu-minīn And in case disaster comes upon them for what they have done themselves, they should say: "O Lord, why did You not send an apostle to us that we should have followed Your commands, and been with those who are believers;"
48
فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِنْ عِندِنَا قَالُوا۟ لَوْلَآ أُوتِىَ مِثْلَ مَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ أَوَلَمْ يَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ قَالُوا۟ سِحْرَانِ تَظَـٰهَرَا وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِكُلٍّ كَـٰفِرُونَ falammā jā-ahumul ḥaqqu min `indinā qālū lawlā ūtiya mithla mā ūtiya mūsā ۚ awalam yakfurū bimā ūtiya mūsā min qabl ۖ qālū siḥrāni taẓāharā waqālū innā bikullin kāfirūn But when the truth came to them from Us, they said: "Why is he not given the like of what was given to Moses?" Did they not disbelieve before in what was given to Moses? They said: "Both are imposters one like the other," and added: "We do not believe in either."
49
قُلْ فَأْتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبٍ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ أَهْدَىٰ مِنْهُمَآ أَتَّبِعْهُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ qul fa-tū bikitābin min `indillāhi huwa ahdā minhumā attabi`hu in kuntum ṣādiqīn Say: "Then bring a Book from God which gives better guidance than these so that I may follow it, if you speak the truth."
50
فَإِن لَّمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَكَ فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يَتَّبِعُونَ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ بِغَيْرِ هُدًى مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ fa-in lam yastajībū laka fa`lam annamā yattabi`ūna ahwā-ahum ۚ wa man aḍallu mimmanit-taba`a hawāhu bighayri hudan minallāh ۚ innallāha lā yahdil qawmaẓ ẓālimīn Then, if they cannot give you an answer, know that they are only following their lusts. And who can be farther astray than he who follows his lust without any guidance from God? And certainly God does not guide an unjust people.
51
وَلَقَدْ وَصَّلْنَا لَهُمُ ٱلْقَوْلَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ walaqad waṣṣalnā lahumul qawla la`allahum yatadhakkarūn We have been sending word to them that they may take a warning.
52
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبْلِهِۦ هُم بِهِۦ يُؤْمِنُونَ alladhīna ātaynāhumul kitāba min qablihi hum bihi yu-minūn Those to whom We gave the Book before this do believe in it;
53
وَإِذَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦٓ إِنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلِهِۦ مُسْلِمِينَ wa idhā yutlā `alayhim qālū āmannā bihi innahul ḥaqqu min rabbinā innā kunnā min qablihi muslimīn And when it is read out to them, say: "We believe in it. It's the truth from our Lord. We had committed ourselves before it came."
54
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُؤْتَوْنَ أَجْرَهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَيَدْرَءُونَ بِٱلْحَسَنَةِ ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ ulā-ika yu-tawna ajrahum marratayni bimā ṣabarū wayadra-ūna bil ḥasanatis sayyi-ata wa mimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūn These will be given their recompense twice, for they persevered and repelled evil with good, and spent of what We had given them.
55
وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱللَّغْوَ أَعْرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ لَنَآ أَعْمَـٰلُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا نَبْتَغِى ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ wa idhā sami`ullaghwa a`raḍū `anhu waqālū lanā a`mālunā walakum a`mālukum salāmun `alaykum lā nabtaghil jāhilīn When they hear idle talk they turn aside and say: "To us our actions, to you yours. Peace on you; we do not look for the ignorant."
56
إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِى مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ innaka lā tahdī man aḥbabta walākinnallāha yahdī man yashā-u ۚ wahuwa a`lamu bil muhtadīn You cannot guide any one you like: God guides whosoever He please. He knows best who will come to guidance.
57
وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِن نَّتَّبِعِ ٱلْهُدَىٰ مَعَكَ نُتَخَطَّفْ مِنْ أَرْضِنَآ ۚ أَوَلَمْ نُمَكِّن لَّهُمْ حَرَمًا ءَامِنًا يُجْبَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ ثَمَرَٰتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ رِّزْقًا مِّن لَّدُنَّا وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ waqālū in nattabi`il hudā ma`aka nutakhaṭṭaf min arḍinā ۚ awalam numakkin lahum ḥaraman āminan yujbā ilayhi thamarātu kulli shay-in rizqan min ladunnā walākinna aktharahum lā ya`lamūn They say: "If we followed your guidance we would be driven from the land by force." Have We not set up a sanctuary for them, to which is brought a wealth of everything as provision from Us? But most of them do not understand.
58
وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍۭ بَطِرَتْ مَعِيشَتَهَا ۖ فَتِلْكَ مَسَـٰكِنُهُمْ لَمْ تُسْكَن مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ wakam ahlaknā min qaryatin baṭirat ma`īshatahā ۖ fatilka masākinuhum lam tuskan min ba`dihim illā qalīlā ۖ wakunnā naḥnul wārithīn How many habitations that had come to boast of their resources have We destroyed? These their dwellings were never inhabited except rarely after them; and they came back to Us.
59
وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ مُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يَبْعَثَ فِىٓ أُمِّهَا رَسُولًا يَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا ۚ وَمَا كُنَّا مُهْلِكِى ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ إِلَّا وَأَهْلُهَا ظَـٰلِمُونَ wa mā kāna rabbuka muhlikal qurā ḥattā yab`atha fī ummihā rasūlan yatlū `alayhim āyātinā ۚ wa mā kunnā muhlikil qurā illā wa-ahluhā ẓālimūn But your Lord does not destroy habitations without having sent an apostle to their metropolis to read out Our commandments to them. We would never have destroyed cities if their inhabitants were not given to wickedness.
60
وَمَآ أُوتِيتُم مِّن شَىْءٍ فَمَتَـٰعُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتُهَا ۚ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ wa mā ūtītum min shay-in famatā`ul ḥayātid dunyā wazīnatuhā ۚ wa mā `indallāhi khayrun wa-abqā ۚ afalā ta`qilūn Whatsoever has been given you is the stuff this life is made of, and only its embellishment. What is with your Lord is better and abiding. Will you not understand?

62

We clear ourselves before You: They never worshipped us."
64
وَقِيلَ ٱدْعُوا۟ شُرَكَآءَكُمْ فَدَعَوْهُمْ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَهُمْ وَرَأَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ۚ لَوْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يَهْتَدُونَ waqīlad-`ū shurakā-akum fada`awhum falam yastajībū lahum wara-awul `adhāb ۚ law annahum kānū yahtadūn (The sinners) will be told: "Invoke your partners." They will call on them, but they will not answer; and they will see the torment (and wish) if only they had come to guidance.
65

66

67

The good is not for them to choose. Too holy and high is God for what they associate with Him.
69
وَرَبُّكَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُكِنُّ صُدُورُهُمْ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ warabbuka ya`lamu mā tukinnu ṣudūruhum wa mā yu`linūn Your Lord well knows what they hide in their breasts and what they disclose.

فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ فِى زِينَتِهِۦ ۖ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا يَـٰلَيْتَ لَنَا مِثْلَ مَآ أُوتِىَ قَـٰرُونُ إِنَّهُۥ لَذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ fakharaja `alā qawmihi fī zīnatih ۖ qālal ladhīna yurīdūnal ḥayātad dunyā yālayta lanā mithla mā ūtiya qārūnu innahu ladhū ḥaẓẓin `aẓīm Then he came before his people in all pomp; and those enamoured of this world, said: "Ah would that we had what Qarun has been given! He indeed possesses great good fortune."

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا وَلَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ waqālal ladhīna ūtul `il-ma waylakum thawābullāhi khayrul liman āmana wa`amila ṣāliḥan walā yulaqqāhā illaṣ ṣābirūn But those who knew better, said: "Alack-a-day! God's guerdon is better for those who believe and do the right. Only those who persevere will receive it."

There was not a body that could help him against (the will) of God, nor was he able to save himself.

Had God not been gracious to us He could have (opened up) the earth and made it swallow us. Surely the infidels will not succeed."

تِلْكَ ٱلدَّارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ نَجْعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوًّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فَسَادًا ۚ وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ tilkad dārul-ākhiratu naj`aluhā lilladhīna lā yurīdūna `uluwwan fil-arḍi walā fasādā ۚ wal `āqibatu lil-muttaqīn We shall give the mansion of the Hereafter to those who do not want to be haughty in the land and spread corruption. The future belongs to those who take heed for themselves and follow the straight path.

مَن جَآءَ بِٱلْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُۥ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهَا ۖ وَمَن جَآءَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجْزَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ إِلَّا مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ man jā-a bil ḥasanati falahu khayrun minhā ۖ wa man jā-a bis sayyi-ati falā yujzal ladhīna `amilus sayyi-āti illā mā kānū ya`malūn Whoever does good will receive better than what he has done; and whoever does ill shall be requited but to the extent of what he does.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِى فَرَضَ عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لَرَآدُّكَ إِلَىٰ مَعَادٍ ۚ قُل رَّبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مَن جَآءَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ وَمَنْ هُوَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ innal ladhī faraḍa `alaykal qur-āna larādduka ilā ma`ād ۚ qul rabbī a`lamu man jā-a bil hudā wa man huwa fī ḍalālin mubīn He who has assigned (the propagation) of the Qur'an to you will bring you back to the destination. Say: "My Lord knows who has come to guidance, and who is clearly in error."

وَمَا كُنتَ تَرْجُوٓا۟ أَن يُلْقَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۖ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ ظَهِيرًا لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ wa mā kunta tarjū an yulqā ilaykal kitābu illā raḥmatan min rabbik ۖ falā takūnanna ẓahīral lilkāfirīn You did not expect that the Book would be given to you except by the favour of your Lord. So do not be the helper of unbelievers,

وَلَا يَصُدُّنَّكَ عَنْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بَعْدَ إِذْ أُنزِلَتْ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَٱدْعُ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ walā yaṣuddunnaka `an āyātillāhi ba`da idh unzilat ilayk ۖ wad`u ilā rabbik ۖ walā takūnanna minal mushrikīn Nor should you let them turn you away from the commandments of God once they have been delivered to you; and call them to your Lord, and do not be an idolater,

There is no god but He. All things will perish save His magnificence. His is the judgement, and to Him will you be brought back in the end.
