بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
ALL PRAISE BE to God who has revealed to His votary the Book which is free of all obliquity,
2
قَيِّمًا لِّيُنذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا مِّن لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا qayyimal liyundhira ba-san shadīdan min ladunhu wayubashhiral mu-minīnal ladhīna ya`malūnaṣ ṣāliḥāti anna lahum ajran ḥasanā Immutable, so that it may warn of a severe punishment from Him; and give happy tidings to those who believe and do the right that there is a better reward (of Paradise) for them,
3
مَّـٰكِثِينَ فِيهِ أَبَدًا mākithīna fīhi abadā Where they will abide for ever;
4
وَيُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدًا wayundhiral ladhīna qālut-takhadhallāhu waladā And that it may warn those who say: "God has begotten a son."
5
مَّا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ وَلَا لِـَٔابَآئِهِمْ ۚ كَبُرَتْ كَلِمَةً تَخْرُجُ مِنْ أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۚ إِن يَقُولُونَ إِلَّا كَذِبًا mā lahum bihi min `il-min walā li-ābā-ihim ۚ kaburat kalimatan takhruju min afwāhihim ۚ in yaqūlūna illā kadhibā They have no knowledge of this, as their fathers did not have. How terrible are the words they utter! They speak nothing but lies.
6
فَلَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمْ إِن لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَسَفًا fala`allaka bākhi`un nafsaka `alā āthārihim in lam yu-minū bihādhal ḥadīthi asafā Will you kill yourself for grief of them if they do not believe in this presentation?
7
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا innā ja`alnā mā `alal-arḍi zīnatan lahā linabluwahum ayyuhum aḥsanu `amalā We have made whatever exists on the earth its adornment to test and try them (and) know who acts better;
8
وَإِنَّا لَجَـٰعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا wa innā lajā`ilūna mā `alayhā ṣa`īdan juruzā For We shall certainly turn it to barren dust.
9
أَمْ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْكَهْفِ وَٱلرَّقِيمِ كَانُوا۟ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا عَجَبًا am ḥasibta anna aṣ-ḥābal kahfi war raqīmi kānū min āyātinā `ajabā Do you think the men of the cave and Ar-Raqim were so strange among Our signs?
10
إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا idh awal fityatu ilal-kahfi faqālū rabbanā ātinā min ladunka raḥmatan wahayyi-lanā min amrinā rashadā When those young men took shelter in the cave, and prayed: "O Lord, grant us Your favour and dispose our affair aright,"
11
فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ فِى ٱلْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَدًا faḍarabnā `alā ādhānihim fil kahfi sinīna `adadā We sealed off their ears in the cave for a number of years,
12
ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَـٰهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ أَىُّ ٱلْحِزْبَيْنِ أَحْصَىٰ لِمَا لَبِثُوٓا۟ أَمَدًا thumma ba`athnāhum lina`lama ayyul ḥizbayni aḥṣā limā labithū amadā Then roused them to ascertain which of the two groups could account for the period they had stayed.
13
نَّحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نَبَأَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنَـٰهُمْ هُدًى naḥnu naquṣṣu `alayka naba-ahum bil ḥaqq ۚ innahum fityatun āmanū birabbihim wazidnāhum hudā We narrate their story to you in all truth. They were a few young men who believed in their Lord; so We gave them greater guidance.
14
وَرَبَطْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ إِذْ قَامُوا۟ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ لَن نَّدْعُوَا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَـٰهًا ۖ لَّقَدْ قُلْنَآ إِذًا شَطَطًا warabaṭnā `alā qulūbihim idh qāmū faqālū rabbunā rabbus samāwāti wal-arḍi lan nad`uwa min dūnihi ilāhā ۖ laqad qulnā idhan shaṭaṭā And strengthened their hearts when they stood up and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We shall invoke no god beside Him, for we shall have uttered a blasphemy then.
15
هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمُنَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ ءَالِهَةً ۖ لَّوْلَا يَأْتُونَ عَلَيْهِم بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۭ بَيِّنٍ ۖ فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا hā-ulā-i qawmunat-takhadhū min dūnihi ālihah ۖ lawlā ya-tūna `alayhim bisulṭānin bayyin ۖ faman aẓlamu mimmanif-tarā `alallāhi kadhibā As for these our people here, they have taken to other gods apart from Him. Then why do they not bring a clear authority for them? Who is more wicked than he who fabricates a lie against God?"
16
وَإِذِ ٱعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ فَأْوُۥٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ يَنشُرْ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِهِۦ وَيُهَيِّئْ لَكُم مِّنْ أَمْرِكُم مِّرْفَقًا wa idhi'-tazaltumūhum wa mā ya`budūna illallāha fa-uwū ilal-kahfi yanshur lakum rabbukum min raḥmatihi wayuhayyi-lakum min amrikum mirfaqā (And they said to each other:) "Now that you have withdrawn from them and what they worship beside God, it is better to take refuge in the cave. Your Lord may bestow of His mercy on you, and facilitate your affair."
17
وَتَرَى ٱلشَّمْسَ إِذَا طَلَعَت تَّزَٰوَرُ عَن كَهْفِهِمْ ذَاتَ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَإِذَا غَرَبَت تَّقْرِضُهُمْ ذَاتَ ٱلشِّمَالِ وَهُمْ فِى فَجْوَةٍ مِّنْهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ مَن يَهْدِ ٱللَّهُ فَهُوَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِ ۖ وَمَن يُضْلِلْ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُۥ وَلِيًّا مُّرْشِدًا watarash shamsa idhā ṭala`at tazāwaru `an kahfihim dhātal yamīni wa idhā gharabat taqriḍuhum dhātash shimāli wahum fī fajwatim minh ۚ dhālika min āyātillāh ۗ man yahdillāhu fahuwal muhtad ۖ wa man yuḍlil falan tajida lahu waliyyan murshidā You may well have seen when the sun came up it moved away to the right of the cave, and when it went down it turned away to the left, and they stayed in its open space. This was among the signs of God. Whoever is guided by God follows the right path; and whosoever goes astray will not find a guide to show him the way.
18
وَتَحْسَبُهُمْ أَيْقَاظًا وَهُمْ رُقُودٌ ۚ وَنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَذَاتَ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۖ وَكَلْبُهُم بَـٰسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيْهِ بِٱلْوَصِيدِ ۚ لَوِ ٱطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا wataḥsabuhum ayqāẓan wahum ruqūd ۚ wanuqallibuhum dhātal yamīni wadhātash shimāl ۖ wakalbuhum bāsiṭun dhirā`ayhi bil waṣīd ۚ lawiṭ-ṭala`ta `alayhim lawallayta minhum firāran walamuli-ta minhum ru`bā You may have thought that they were awake, yet they were asleep. We made them turn right and left, while their dog lay with his forelegs stretched across the threshold. If you had looked at them you would have surely turned away and fled with horror at the sight.
19
وَكَذَٰلِكَ بَعَثْنَـٰهُمْ لِيَتَسَآءَلُوا۟ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ قَآئِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ ۚ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثْتُمْ فَٱبْعَثُوٓا۟ أَحَدَكُم بِوَرِقِكُمْ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ فَلْيَنظُرْ أَيُّهَآ أَزْكَىٰ طَعَامًا فَلْيَأْتِكُم بِرِزْقٍ مِّنْهُ وَلْيَتَلَطَّفْ وَلَا يُشْعِرَنَّ بِكُمْ أَحَدًا wakadhālika ba`athnāhum liyatasā-alū baynahum ۚ qāla qā-ilun minhum kam labithtum ۖ qālū labithnā yawman aw ba`ḍa yawm ۚ qālū rabbukum a`lamu bimā labithtum fab`athū aḥadakum biwariqikum hādhihi ilal-madīnati falyanẓur ayyuhā azkā ṭa`āman falya-tikum birizqin minhu walyatalaṭṭaf walā yush`iranna bikum aḥadā Even so We roused them that they may question one another. One of them asked: "How long have you stayed here?" They said: "A day or less than a day." "Your Lord knows best," they said, "how long you have stayed. So send one of you to the town with this money of yours to look for wholesome food and bring it for you; but he should be careful not to let your presence known.
20
إِنَّهُمْ إِن يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ يَرْجُمُوكُمْ أَوْ يُعِيدُوكُمْ فِى مِلَّتِهِمْ وَلَن تُفْلِحُوٓا۟ إِذًا أَبَدًا innahum in yaẓharū `alaykum yarjumūkum aw yu`īdūkum fī millatihim walan tufliḥū idhan abadā If they come to know of you they will stone you to death, or force you to go back to their creed; then you will never succeed."
21
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَعْثَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَأَنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَآ إِذْ يَتَنَـٰزَعُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَمْرَهُمْ ۖ فَقَالُوا۟ ٱبْنُوا۟ عَلَيْهِم بُنْيَـٰنًا ۖ رَّبُّهُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِهِمْ ۚ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ غَلَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرِهِمْ لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ عَلَيْهِم مَّسْجِدًا wakadhālika a`tharnā `alayhim liya`lamū anna wa`dallāhi ḥaqqun wa-annas sā`ata lā rayba fīhā idh yatanāza`ūna baynahum amrahum ۖ faqālub-nū `alayhim bunyānā ۖ rabbuhum a`lamu bihim ۚ qālal ladhīna ghalabū `alā amrihim lanattakhidhanna `alayhim masjidā Thus did We inform the people about them that they may know the promise of God is true, and there is no doubt that the Hour will come. As they were arguing among themselves as to what should be done with them, (some) said: "Erect a monument over them. Their Lord is best cognisant of them." Those who prevailed, said: "We shall build a place of worship over their (sepulchre)."
22
سَيَقُولُونَ ثَلَـٰثَةٌ رَّابِعُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ خَمْسَةٌ سَادِسُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ رَجْمًۢا بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۖ وَيَقُولُونَ سَبْعَةٌ وَثَامِنُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ ۚ قُل رَّبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِعِدَّتِهِم مَّا يَعْلَمُهُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ ۗ فَلَا تُمَارِ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا مِرَآءً ظَـٰهِرًا وَلَا تَسْتَفْتِ فِيهِم مِّنْهُمْ أَحَدًا sayaqūlūna thalāthatun rābi`uhum kalbuhum wayaqūlūna khamsatun sādisuhum kalbuhum rajman bil ghayb ۖ wayaqūlūna sab`atun wathāminuhum kalbuhum ۚ qul rabbī a`lamu bi`iddatihim mā ya`lamuhum illā qalīl ۗ falā tumāri fīhim illā mirā-an ẓāhiran walā tastafti fīhim minhum aḥadā Some will say: "They were three, and their dog was the fourth;" and some will also say: "They were five and their dog was the sixth," -- guessing in the dark. And some will even say: "They were seven, and their dog the eighth." Say: "My Lord alone knows best their number; none but only a few know of them." So do not argue about it with them but lightly, and do not enquire about them from any one of them.
23
وَلَا تَقُولَنَّ لِشَا۟ىْءٍ إِنِّى فَاعِلٌ ذَٰلِكَ غَدًا walā taqūlanna lishay-in innī fā`ilun dhālika ghadā Do not say of any thing: "I will do it tomorrow,"

25

26

He alone knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth. How distinctly He sees and hears! They have no other guardian but Him, and He does not share His authority with any one."
27
وَٱتْلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِن كِتَابِ رَبِّكَ ۖ لَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَلَن تَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا watlu mā ūḥiya ilayka min kitābi rabbik ۖ lā mubaddila likalimātihi walan tajida min dūnihi multaḥadā Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no one who can change the word of God; and you will not find refuge except in Him.
28

Do not turn your eyes away from them, seeking the splendours of this world, and do not follow him whose heart We have made oblivious to Our remembrance, who follows his own lust and exceeds the bound.
29

We have prepared for the sinners a fire which will envelope them in its tent. If they ask for water they will be helped to liquid like molten brass that would scald their mouths. How evil the drink, and evil the resting-place!

How excellent the guerdon, and excellent the resting-place!

فَعَسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَن يُؤْتِيَنِ خَيْرًا مِّن جَنَّتِكَ وَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهَا حُسْبَانًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيدًا زَلَقًا fa`asā rabbī an yu-tiyani khayran min jannatika wayursila `alayhā ḥusbānan minas samā-i fatuṣbiḥa ṣa`īdan zalaqā Yet, my Lord may haply give me a garden better than yours, and He may send a thunder-bolt, from the skies and in the morning it will be a barren plain;
41
أَوْ يُصْبِحَ مَآؤُهَا غَوْرًا فَلَن تَسْتَطِيعَ لَهُۥ طَلَبًا aw yuṣbiḥa mā-uhā ghawran falan tastaṭī`a lahu ṭalabā Or else of a morning its water may sink underground, and you will not find a trace of it."
42
وَأُحِيطَ بِثَمَرِهِۦ فَأَصْبَحَ يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَنفَقَ فِيهَا وَهِىَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَيَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى لَمْ أُشْرِكْ بِرَبِّىٓ أَحَدًا wa-uḥīṭa bithamarihi fa-aṣbaḥa yuqallibu kaffayhi `alā mā anfaqa fīhā wahiya khāwiyatun `alā `urūshihā wayaqūlu yālaytanī lam ushrik birabbī aḥadā And his vines were overtaken (with disaster), and he began to wring his hands (at the loss) of what he had spent on them, for the vines had fallen upon their trellises; and he said: "Would to God that I had not associated any one with my Lord."

وَلَمْ تَكُن لَّهُۥ فِئَةٌ يَنصُرُونَهُۥ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا كَانَ مُنتَصِرًا walam takun lahu fi-atun yanṣurūnahu min dūnillāhi wa mā kāna muntaṣirā He had no body to help him other than God, nor was he able to save himself.

45
وَٱضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا كَمَآءٍ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَٱخْتَلَطَ بِهِۦ نَبَاتُ ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَصْبَحَ هَشِيمًا تَذْرُوهُ ٱلرِّيَـٰحُ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مُّقْتَدِرًا waḍrib lahum mathalal-ḥayātid dunyā kamā-in anzalnāhu minas samā-i fakhtalaṭa bihi nabātul-arḍi fa-aṣbaḥa hashīman tadhrūhur riyāḥ ۗ wakānallāhu `alā kulli shay-in muqtadirā Present to them the example of the life of this world so like the water We send down from the skies that mingles with the earth to nourish its vegetation, which then on the morrow turns to stubble and is blown away by the wind. God has power over everything.
46
ٱلْمَالُ وَٱلْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ أَمَلًا al-mālu wal banūna zīnatul ḥayātid dunyā ۖ wal bāqiyātuṣ ṣāliḥātu khayrun `inda rabbika thawāban wakhayrun amalā Wealth and children are only the gloss of this world, but good deeds that abide are better with your Lord for recompense, and better for expectation.

وَيَوْمَ نُسَيِّرُ ٱلْجِبَالَ وَتَرَى ٱلْأَرْضَ بَارِزَةً وَحَشَرْنَـٰهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا wayawma nusayyirul jibāla wataral-arḍa bārizatan waḥasharnāhum falam nughādir minhum aḥadā The day We shall move the mountains, and you see the earth an open plain, We shall gather them together, leaving none behind.
48
وَعُرِضُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفًّا لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۭ ۚ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَلَّن نَّجْعَلَ لَكُم مَّوْعِدًا wa`uriḍū `alā rabbika ṣaffal laqad ji-tumūnā kamā khalaqnākum awwala marrah ۚ bal za`amtum allan naj`ala lakum maw`idā They will be arraigned before their Lord row on row, (and He will say): "Well, you have come to Us as We had first created you, even though you imagined We had fixed no time for this meeting."
49
وَوُضِعَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ فَتَرَى ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا فِيهِ وَيَقُولُونَ يَـٰوَيْلَتَنَا مَالِ هَـٰذَا ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً إِلَّآ أَحْصَىٰهَا ۚ وَوَجَدُوا۟ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ حَاضِرًا ۗ وَلَا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدًا wawuḍi`al kitābu fataral mujrimīna mushfiqīna mimmā fīhi wayaqūlūna yāwaylatanā māli hādhal kitābi lā yughādiru ṣaghīratan walā kabīratan illā aḥṣāhā ۚ wawajadū mā `amilū ḥāḍirā ۗ walā yaẓlimu rabbuka aḥadā The ledger (of their deeds) would be placed before them. Then you will see the sinners terrified at its contents, and say: "Alas, what a written revelation this, which has not left unaccounted the smallest or the greatest thing!" They will find in it whatsoever they had done. Your Lord does not wrong any one.

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِـَٔادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِۦٓ ۗ أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُۥ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُۥٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِى وَهُمْ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّۢ ۚ بِئْسَ لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بَدَلًا wa idh qulnā lil-malā-ikatis-judū li-ādama fasajadū illā iblīsa kāna minal jinni fafasaqa `an amri rabbih ۗ afatattakhidhūnahu wadhurriyyatahu awliyā-a min dūnī wahum lakum `aduww ۚ bi-sa liẓẓālimīna badalā When We said to the angels: "Bow before Adam in adoration," they all bowed but Iblis. He was one of the jinni and rebelled against his Lord's command. And yet you take him and his offspring as your friends instead of Me, even though they are your enemies. How sad a substitute for the evil-doers!
51
مَّآ أَشْهَدتُّهُمْ خَلْقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا خَلْقَ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَمَا كُنتُ مُتَّخِذَ ٱلْمُضِلِّينَ عَضُدًا mā ash-hadtuhum khalqas samāwāti wal-arḍi walā khalqa anfusihim wa mā kuntu muttakhidhal muḍillīna `aḍudā I did not call them to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor their own creation. I would not take as helpers those who lead (men) astray.
52
وَيَوْمَ يَقُولُ نَادُوا۟ شُرَكَآءِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُمْ فَدَعَوْهُمْ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَا بَيْنَهُم مَّوْبِقًا wayawma yaqūlu nādū shurakā-iyal ladhīna za`amtum fada`awhum falam yastajībū lahum waja`alnā baynahum mawbiqā The day He will say: "Call those you had called My compeers," they will call them, but will get no response, and We shall place a gulf between them.
53
وَرَءَا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ ٱلنَّارَ فَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُم مُّوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُوا۟ عَنْهَا مَصْرِفًا wara al mujrimūnan nāra faẓannū annahum muwāqi`ūhā walam yajidū `anhā maṣrifā The sinners will see the Fire and know that they will be thrown into it and will not find a way of escape from it.
54
وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِى هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانِ لِلنَّاسِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَكْثَرَ شَىْءٍ جَدَلًا walaqad ṣarrafnā fī hādhal qur-āni linnāsi min kulli mathal ۚ wakānal-insānu akthara shay-in jadalā We have explained in various ways all things to men in this Qur'an; but of all things man is most contentious.
55
وَمَا مَنَعَ ٱلنَّاسَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ إِذْ جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ قُبُلًا wa mā mana`an nāsa an yu-minū idh jā-ahumul hudā wayastaghfirū rabbahum illā an ta-tiyahum sunnatul-awwalīna aw ya-tiyahumul `adhābu qubulā There is nothing to prevent men from believing when the guidance has come to them, and asking for their Lord's forgiveness, unless they want the example of earlier people visited upon them, or the punishment to appear right before their eyes.
56
وَمَا نُرْسِلُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ ۚ وَيُجَـٰدِلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا۟ بِهِ ٱلْحَقَّ ۖ وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ ءَايَـٰتِى وَمَآ أُنذِرُوا۟ هُزُوًا wa mā nursilul mursalīna illā mubashhirīna wa mundhirīn ۚ wayujādilul ladhīna kafarū bil bāṭili liyud-ḥiḍū bihil ḥaqq ۖ wattakhadhū āyātī wa mā undhirū huzuwā We never send apostles but to convey happy tidings, and to warn. But those who disbelieve contend with false arguments to nullify the truth. They make a mockery of My revelations and of what they had been warned.
57
وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا وَنَسِىَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ ۚ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا ۖ وَإِن تَدْعُهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ فَلَن يَهْتَدُوٓا۟ إِذًا أَبَدًا wa man aẓlamu mimman dhukkira bi-āyāti rabbihi fa-a`raḍa `anhā wanasiya mā qaddamat yadāh ۚ innā ja`alnā `alā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wafī ādhānihim waqrā ۖ wa in tad`uhum ilal-hudā falan yahtadū idhan abadā Who is more unjust than he who, on being reminded of his Lord's revelations, turns away from them, and forgets the evil deeds he had committed in the past. Verily We have placed a covering on their hearts so that they do not understand, and a deafness in their ears so that however you may call them to guidance they will never be guided aright.
58

If He had pleased to punish them for their doings He would have punished them immediately. But a term is fixed for them from which they will find no escape.

61

Only Satan made me forget to mention this; but the wonder is the fish escaped to the sea."
64

You have done a strange thing!"

There they found a wall that was crumbling, which he repaired. Moses remarked: "You could have demanded wages for it if you liked."

I damaged it because there was a king after them who used to seize every ship by force.
80
وَأَمَّا ٱلْغُلَـٰمُ فَكَانَ أَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِينَآ أَن يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَـٰنًا وَكُفْرًا wa-ammal ghulāmu fakāna abawāhu mu-minayni fakhashīnā an yurhiqahumā ṭughyānan wakufrā As for the boy, his parents were believers, but we feared that he would harass them with defiance and disbelief.

Their father was an upright man. So your Lord willed that on reaching the age of maturity they should dig out their treasure as a favour from their Lord. So, I did not do that of my own accord. This is the explanation of things you could not bear with patience."

إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ سَبَبًا innā makkannā lahu fil-arḍi wa-ātaynāhu min kulli shay-in sababā Say: "I will cite before you his commemoration." We gave him authority in the land and means of accomplishing every end.
85
فَأَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا fa-atba`a sababā So he followed a certain road
86
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِى عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًا ۗ قُلْنَا يَـٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّآ أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّآ أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًا ḥattā idhā balagha maghribash shamsi wajadahā taghrubu fī `aynin ḥami-atin wawajada `indahā qawmā ۗ qulnā yādhal qarnayni immā an tu`adhhiba wa immā an tattakhidha fīhim ḥusnā Till he reached the point of the setting sun, and saw it set behind a muddy lake, and near it found a people. We said: "O Dhu'l-Qarnain, you may either punish them or treat them with kindness."
87
قَالَ أَمَّا مَن ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهُۥ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ فَيُعَذِّبُهُۥ عَذَابًا نُّكْرًا qāla ammā man ẓalama fasawfa nu`adhhibuhu thumma yuraddu ilā rabbihi fayu`adhhibuhu `adhāban nukrā He said: "I shall punish whosoever is wicked. He will then be sent back to his Lord who will inflict on him a terrible punishment.
88
وَأَمَّا مَنْ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا فَلَهُۥ جَزَآءً ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ وَسَنَقُولُ لَهُۥ مِنْ أَمْرِنَا يُسْرًا wa-ammā man āmana wa`amila ṣāliḥan falahu jazā-anil-ḥusnā ۖ wasanaqūlu lahu min amrinā yusrā But he who believes and does the right will have an excellent reward, and we shall make things easy for him."
89
ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا thumma atba`a sababā He then followed (another) road
90
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُم مِّن دُونِهَا سِتْرًا ḥattā idhā balagha maṭli`ash shamsi wajadahā taṭlu`u `alā qawmin lam naj`al lahum min dūnihā sitrā Till he reached the point of the rising sun, and saw it rise over a people for whom We had provided no shelter against it.
91
كَذَٰلِكَ وَقَدْ أَحَطْنَا بِمَا لَدَيْهِ خُبْرًا kadhālika waqad aḥaṭnā bimā ladayhi khubrā It was so, for We were fully informed about him.
92
ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا thumma atba`a sababā He then followed (another) road
93
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ ٱلسَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَّا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا ḥattā idhā balagha baynas saddayni wajada min dūnihimā qawmal lā yakādūna yafqahūna qawlā Till he reached a place between two mountains, and found this side of it a people who understood but little of what was spoken.
94
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجًا عَلَىٰٓ أَن تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدًّا qālū yādhal qarnayni inna ya-jūja wa ma-jūja mufsidūna fil-arḍi fahal naj`alu laka kharjan `alā an taj`ala baynanā wabaynahum saddā They said: 'O Dhu'l-Qarnain, Gog and Magog are oppressing the land. May we pay you some tribute so that you could build a rampart between us and them?"
95
قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّى فِيهِ رَبِّى خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِى بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا qāla mā makkannī fīhi rabbī khayrun fa-a`īnūnī biquwwatin aj`al baynakum wabaynahum radmā He said: "The ability my Lord has given me is better. So help me with your manual labour; I will build a wall between you and them.
96
ءَاتُونِى زُبَرَ ٱلْحَدِيدِ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا سَاوَىٰ بَيْنَ ٱلصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ ٱنفُخُوا۟ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَعَلَهُۥ نَارًا قَالَ ءَاتُونِىٓ أُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْرًا ātūnī zubaral ḥadīd ۖ ḥattā idhā sāwā baynaṣ ṣadafayni qālan-fukhū ۖ ḥattā idhā ja`alahu nāran qāla ātūnī ufrigh `alayhi qiṭrā Bring me ingots of iron," (which they did) until the space between two mountain sides was filled up. "Blow your bellows," he said; (and they blew) until it was red hot. "Bring me molten brass," he said, "that I may pour over it."
97
فَمَا ٱسْطَـٰعُوٓا۟ أَن يَظْهَرُوهُ وَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ لَهُۥ نَقْبًا famas-ṭā`ū an yaẓharūhu wa mas-taṭā`ū lahu naqbā Thus (Gog and Magog) could neither climb over it nor dig a hole through (the rampart).
98
قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَحْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّى ۖ فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعْدُ رَبِّى جَعَلَهُۥ دَكَّآءَ ۖ وَكَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّى حَقًّا qāla hādhā raḥmatun min rabbī ۖ fa-idhā jā-a wa`du rabbī ja`alahu dakkā-a ۖ wakāna wa`du rabbī ḥaqqā "This is the benevolence of my Lord," he said; "but when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will reduce it to a mound of dust; and the promise of my Lord is true."
99
وَتَرَكْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَمُوجُ فِى بَعْضٍ ۖ وَنُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَجَمَعْنَـٰهُمْ جَمْعًا wataraknā ba`ḍahum yawma-idhiy yamūju fī ba`ḍ ۖ wanufikha fiṣ ṣūri fajama`nāhum jam`ā We shall leave them on that day surging like waves pressing one against the other, and the trumpet blast will be sounded, when We shall gather them all together.
100
وَعَرَضْنَا جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَرْضًا wa`araḍnā jahannama yawma-idhin lilkāfirīna `arḍā Then We shall bring Hell right before the infidels
101
ٱلَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِى غِطَآءٍ عَن ذِكْرِى وَكَانُوا۟ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا alladhīna kānat a`yunuhum fī ghiṭā-in `an dhikrī wakānū lā yastaṭī`ūna sam`ā Whose eyes were veiled against My warning, and they could not hear.
102
أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَن يَتَّخِذُوا۟ عِبَادِى مِن دُونِىٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۚ إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ نُزُلًا afaḥasibal ladhīna kafarū an yattakhidhū `ibādī min dūnī awliyā-a ۚ innā a`tadnā jahannama lilkāfirīna nuzulā Do the unbelievers think they can make My own creatures their protectors against Me? We have prepared Hell for the hospitality of infidels.
103
قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِٱلْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَـٰلًا qul hal nunabbi-ukum bil-akhsarīna a`mālā Say: "Shall I tell you whose labour will be wasted?
104

105
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَلِقَآئِهِۦ فَحَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ فَلَا نُقِيمُ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ وَزْنًا ulā-ikal ladhīna kafarū bi-āyāti rabbihim waliqā-ihi faḥabiṭat a`māluhum falā nuqīmu lahum yawmal qiyāmati waznā They are those who reject the signs of their Lord, and the meeting with Him. So their good deeds will be fruitless, and on the Day of Judgement We shall not appoint any weighing for them.
106
ذَٰلِكَ جَزَآؤُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُوا۟ وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ ءَايَـٰتِى وَرُسُلِى هُزُوًا dhālika jazā-uhum jahannamu bimā kafarū wattakhadhū āyātī warusulī huzuwā Their requital will be Hell, because they disbelieved and mocked My signs and messengers.
107
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتُ ٱلْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا innal ladhīna āmanū wa`amiluṣ ṣāliḥāti kānat lahum jannātul firdawsi nuzulā But surely those who believe and do the right will have gardens of Paradise as gift,

110
