بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration.
2
رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ rubamā yawaddul ladhīna kafarū law kānū muslimīn The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim).
3
ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ dharhum ya-kulū wayatamatta`ū wayulhihimul-amal ۖ fasawfa ya`lamūn Leave them to feast and revel, beguiled by hope; they will come to know soon.
4
وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ wa mā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā walahā kitābun ma`lūm Not one habitation have We destroyed but at the time determined for it.
5
مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wa mā yasta-khirūn No people can hasten or delay the term already fixed for them.
6
وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ waqālū yā-ayyuhal ladhī nuzzila `alayhidh dhikru innaka lamajnūn And yet they say: "You, to whom this Exposition has been sent are surely possessed of the Devil.
7
لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ law mā ta-tīnā bil malā-ikati in kunta minaṣ ṣādiqīn If you are a man of truth, why can't you bring the angels to us?"
8
مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ mā nunazzilul malā-ikata illā bil ḥaqqi wa mā kānū idhan munẓarīn But then We never send the angels down save with the purpose (of enforcing their doom), after which they will not be given more respite.
9
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ innā naḥnu nazzalnadh dhikra wa innā lahu laḥāfiẓūn We have sent down this Exposition, and We will guard it.
10
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ walaqad arsalnā min qablika fī shiya`il-awwalīn We had also sent apostles to people of earlier persuasions.
11
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ wa mā ya-tīhim min rasūlin illā kānū bihi yastahzi-ūn But never once an apostle came to them at whom they did not scoff.
12
كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ kadhālika naslukuhu fī qulūbil mujrimīn We place in the hearts of sinners (disbelief).
13
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ lā yu-minūna bih ۖ waqad khalat sunnatul-awwalīn So, they will not believe in it: The example of former people is there.
14
وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ walaw fataḥnā `alayhim bāban minas samā-i faẓallū fīhi ya`rujūn Even if We open a door in the heavens and they ascend through it in broad daylight,
15
لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun mas-ḥūrūn They will say all the same: "Our eyes were dazed (and clouded over). We were a people ensorcelled."
16
وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ walaqad ja`alnā fis samā-i burūjan wazayyannāhā linnāẓirīn We have placed the signs of the Zodiac in the sky, and decked it out for those who can see;
17
وَحَفِظْنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ waḥafiẓnāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīm And We have preserved it from every accursed devil,
18
إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ illā manis-taraqas sam`a fa-atba`ahu shihābun mubīn Except the ones who listen on the sly, yet they are chased away by a shooting flame.
19
وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli shay-in mawzūn We stretched the earth and placed upon it firm stabilisers, and made all things grow upon it balanced evenly.
20
وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَـٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ waja`alnā lakum fīhā ma`āyisha wa man lastum lahu birāziqīn We have provided on it sustenance for you, and for those you cannot provide.
21
وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ wa in min shay-in illā `indanā khazā-inuhu wa mā nunazziluhu illā biqadarin ma`lūm Of all things there are We have the stores, and send them down in determined measure.
22
وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِينَ wa-arsalnar riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-anzalnā minas samā-i mā-an fa-asqaynākumūhu wa mā antum lahu bikhāzinīn We send rain-impregnated winds, and water from the sky which you drink, but you are not the keepers of its store.
23
وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ wa innā lanaḥnu nuḥyī wanumītu wanaḥnul wārithūn It is We who give life and We who give death, and We are the One who will abide.
24
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ walaqad `alimnal mustaqdimīna minkum walaqad `alimnal musta-khirīn We surely know those of you who go forward and those of you who lag behind.
25
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ wa inna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum ۚ innahu ḥakīmun `alīm Your Lord will surely gather them together: Certainly He is all-wise and all-knowing.
26
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ walaqad khalaqnal-insāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūn Man We fashioned from fermented clay dried tingling hard,
27
وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ wal jānna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāris samūm As We fashioned jinns before from intense radiated heat.
28
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ wa idh qāla rabbuka lil-malā-ikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūn But when your Lord said to the angels: "I am verily going to create a human being from fermented clay dried tingling hard;
29
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqa`ū lahu sājidīn And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, bow before him in homage;"
30
فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ fasajadal malā-ikatu kulluhum ajma`ūn The angels bowed in homage in a body
31
إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ illā iblīsa abā an yakūna ma`as sājidīn Except Iblis. He refused to bow with the adorers.
32
قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ qāla yā-iblīsu mā laka allā takūna ma`as sājidīn "How is it, O Iblis," said (the Lord), "you did not join those who bowed in homage?"
33
قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ qāla lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūn "How could I bow," said he, "before a mortal whom You created from fermented clay dried tingling hard?"
34
قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ qāla fakhruj minhā fa-innaka rajīm "Go hence, execrable," (said the Lord), "from this place,
35
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ wa inna `alaykalla`nata ilā yawmid dīn Condemned till the day of Doom!"
36
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ qāla rabbi fa-anẓirnī ilā yawmi yub`athūn "O my Lord," said he, "give me respite till the day the dead are raised."
37
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ qāla fa-innaka minal munẓarīn "You are among the reprieved," (said the Lord),
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ qāla rabbi bimā aghwaytanī la-uzayyinanna lahum fil-arḍi wala-ughwiyannahum ajma`īn "O my Lord," he said, "since You have led me into error I'll beguile them with the pleasures of the world and lead them astray,
40
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ illā `ibādaka minhumul mukhlaṣīn Except the chosen ones among Your creatures."
41
قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ qāla hādhā ṣirāṭun `alayya mustaqīm (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me.
42
إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ inna `ibādī laysa laka `alayhim sulṭānun illā manit-taba`aka minal ghāwyn No power shall you have over (all) My creatures except those who fall into error and follow you,
43
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ wa inna jahannama lamaw`iduhum ajma`īn For whom the ordained place is surely Hell,
44
لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ lahā sab`atu abwābin likulli bābin minhum juz-un maqsūm Which has several gates, and each gate is marked for every section of them."
45
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ innal muttaqīna fī jannātin wa`uyūn Verily those who keep away from evil and follow the straight path shall be in the midst of gardens and springs of water.
46
ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ ud-khulūhā bisalāmin āminīn "Enter in peace and tranquility," (they will be told).
47
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ wanaza`nā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ghillin ikhwānan `alā sururin mutaqābilīn We shall cast out any grudge they may have in their hearts. (There) they will sit on couches face to face like brothers together.
48
لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ lā yamassuhum fīhā naṣabun wa mā hum minhā bimukhrajīn No weariness will come upon them, nor will they be sent away from there.

50
وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ wa-anna `adhābī huwal `adhābul-alīm But My punishment is surely a painful one.
51
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ wanabbi-hum `an ḍayfi ibrāhīm Inform them about the matter of Abraham's guests.
52

54
قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ qāla abashhartumūnī `alā an massaniyal kibaru fabima tubashhirūn "You bring me the good news now," he said, "when old age has come upon me. What good news are you giving me then?"
55

56
قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ qāla wa man yaqnaṭu min raḥmati rabbihi illaḍ ḍāllūn "Who would despair of the mercy of his Lord," he answered, "but those who go astray."

66
وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ waqaḍaynā ilayhi dhālikal-amra anna dābira hā-ulā-i maqṭū`un muṣbiḥīn We issued this command to him, for they were going to be destroyed in the morning.

73
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ fa-akhadhat-humuṣ ṣayḥatu mushriqīn So they were seized by the mighty blast at break of day;
74
فَجَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ faja`alnā `āliyahā sāfilahā wa-amṭarnā `alayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīl And We turned the city upside down, and rained on them stones of hardened lava.
75
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ inna fī dhālika la-āyātin lil-mutawassimīn Herein are really signs for those who discern.
76
وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍ wa innahā labisabīlin muqīm This (city) lies on a road that still survives.
77
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ inna fī dhālika la-āyatan lil-mu-minīn Indeed there is a portent in this for those who believe.
78
وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِينَ wa in kāna aṣ-ḥābul-aykati laẓālimīn The dwellers of the Wood (near Midian) were also wicked.
79
فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ fantaqamnā minhum wa innahumā labi-imāmin mubīn So We punished them too. They are both situated by the highway, clearly visible.
80
وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ walaqad kadhhaba aṣ-ḥābul ḥijril mursalīn The people of Al-Hijr denied Our apostles;
81
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ wa-ātaynāhum āyātinā fakānū `anhā mu`riḍīn And though We had given them Our signs they turned away from them.
82
وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ wakānū yanḥitūna minal jibāli buyūtan āminīn They used to hew dwellings in the mountains to live in security.
83
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ fa-akhadhat-humuṣ ṣayḥatu muṣbiḥīn But they were seized by the mighty blast towards the morning;
84
فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ famā aghnā `anhum mā kānū yaksibūn And all that they had done (for security) availed them nothing.
85
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ wa mā khalaqnas samāwāti wal-arḍa wa mā baynahumā illā bil ḥaqq ۗ wa innas sā`ata la-ātiyah ۖ faṣfaḥiṣ ṣafḥal jamīl We have not created but with reason the heavens and the earth and all that lies within them. The Hour (of the great change) is certain to come. So turn away (from them) with a grace.
86
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ inna rabbaka huwal khallāqul `alīm Surely your Lord is the Creator and knows (everything).
87
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ walaqad ātaynāka sab`an minal mathānī wal qur-ānal `aẓīm We have indeed given you the seven oft-repeated (examples), and the majestic Qur'an.
88
لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ lā tamuddanna `aynayka ilā mā matta`nā bihi azwājan minhum walā taḥzan `alayhim wakhfiḍ janāḥaka lil-mu-minīn So covet not things We have bestowed on a portion of them to enjoy, and do not grieve for them, and protect those who believe;
89
وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ waqul innī anan nadhīrul mubīn And say: "I am a distinct warner,"
90
كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ kamā anzalnā `alal-muqtasimīn Like (those) We had sent to those schismatics who slandered their Books
91
ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ alladhīna ja`alul qur-āna `iḍīn And severed their Scripture into fragments.
92
فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ fawarabbika lanas-alannahum ajma`īn By your Lord We shall question them one and all
93
عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ `ammā kānū ya`malūn About their deeds.
94
فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ faṣda` bimā tu-maru wa-a`riḍ `anil mushrikīn So declare to them what We have enjoined, and turn away from idolaters.
95
إِنَّا كَفَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ innā kafaynākal mustahzi-iyn We are surely sufficient to deal with those who scoff at you,
96
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ alladhīna yaj`alūna ma`allāhi ilāhan ākhar ۚ fasawfa ya`lamūn Who place other gods besides God. They will come to know soon.
97
وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ walaqad na`lamu annaka yaḍīqu ṣadruka bimā yaqūlūn We are well aware that you are disheartened by what they say.
98
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ fasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika wakun minas sājidīn But you should glorify your Lord with praises, and be among those who bow in submission;
99
وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ wa`bud rabbaka ḥattā ya-tiyakal yaqīn And go on worshipping your Lord till the certainty (of death) comes upon you.
