يَا ابْنَ
ya ___ ibn
O [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so]!
5
هَلْ أَنْتَ عَلَى الْعَهْدِ الَّذِيْ فَارَقْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ
hal anta `alal `ahdil ladhī fāraqtanā `alayh
Are you still upon the covenant which you left us with
6
مِنْ شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
min shahādati an lā ilāha illallāh
Of testifying that there is no god but Allah
7
وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ
waḥdahu lā sharīka lah
Alone with no partner
8
وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ
wa-anna muḥammadan ṣallallāhu `alayhi wa ālih
And that Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family
9
عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
`abduhu warasūluh
Is His servant and messenger
10
وَسَيِّدُ النَّبِيِّينَ
wasayyidun nabiyyīn
And the master of the Prophets
11
وَخَاتَمُ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
wakhātamul mur-salīn
And the seal of the Messengers
12
وَأَنَّ عَلِيًّا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ
wa-anna `aliyyan amīrul mu-minīn
And that Ali is the Commander of the Faithful
13
وَسَيِّدُ الْوَصِيِّينَ
wasayyidul waṣiyyīn
And the master of the successors
14
وَإِمَامٌ افْتَرَضَ اللَّهُ طَاعَتَهُ عَلَى الْعَالَمِيْنَ
wa-imāmuniftaraḍallāhu ṭā`atahu `alal `ālamīn
And an Imam whose obedience Allah has made obligatory upon all worlds
15
وَأَنَّ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ
wa-annal ḥasana walḥusayn
And that Hasan and Husayn
16
وَعَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ
wa`aliyyabnal ḥusayn
And Ali ibn Husayn
17
وَمُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
wamuḥammadabna `aliyy
And Muhammad ibn Ali
18
وَجَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
waja`farabna muḥammad
And Ja'far ibn Muhammad
19
وَمُوْسَى بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ
wamūsabna ja`far
And Musa ibn Ja'far
20
وَعَلِيَّ بْنَ مُوسٰى
wa`aliyyabna mūsā
And Ali ibn Musa
21
وَمُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
wamuḥammadabna `aliyy
And Muhammad ibn Ali
22
وَعَلِيَّ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
wa`aliyyabna muḥammad
And Ali ibn Muhammad
23
وَالْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
walḥasanabna `aliyy
And Hasan ibn Ali
24
وَالْقَائِمَ الْحُجَّةَ الْمَهْدِيَّ
walqā-imal ḥujjatal mahdiyy
And Al-Qa'im, the Proof, the Mahdi
25
صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ
ṣalawātullāhi `alayhim
May Allah's blessings be upon them
26
أَئِمَّةُ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ
a-immatul mu-minīn
Are the Imams of the believers
27
وَحُجَجُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْخَلْقِ أَجْمَعِينَ
waḥujajullāhi `alal khalqi ajma`īn
And Allah's proofs over all creation
28
وَأَئِمَّتَكَ أَئِمَّةُ هُدًى أَبْرَارٌ
wa-a-immataka a-immatu hudan abrār
And your Imams are Imams of guidance and righteousness
29
يَا بْنَ
ya ___ ibn
O [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so]!
30
إِذَا أَتَاكَ الْمَلَكَانِ الْمُقَرَّبَانِ
idhā atākal malakānil muqarrabān
When the two honored angels come to you
31
رَسُولَيْنِ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ
rasūlayni min `indillāhi tabāraka wata`ālā
As messengers from Allah, the Blessed and Exalted
32
وَسَأَلاَكَ عَنْ رَبِّكَ
wasa-alāka `an rabbik
And they ask you about your Lord
33
وَعَنْ نَبِيِّكَ وَعَنْ دِينِكَ
wa`an nabiyyika wa`an dīnik
And about your Prophet and about your religion
34
وَعَنْ كِتَابِكَ وَعَنْ قِبْلَتِكَ
wa`an kitābika wa`an qiblatik
And about your Book and about your Qibla
35
وَعَنْ أَئِمَّتِكَ فَلَا تَخَفْ
wa`an a-immatika falā takhaf
And about your Imams, do not fear
36
وَقُلْ فِيْ جَوَابِهِمَا
waqul fī jawābihimā
And say in response to them
37
اَللَّهُ جَلَّ جَلاَلُهُ رَبِّي
allāhu jalla jalāluhu rabbī
Allah, Majestic is His Glory, is my Lord
38
وَمُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ نَبِيِّي
wamuḥammadun ṣallallāhu `alayhi wa ālihi nabiyyī
And Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, is my Prophet
39
وَالْاِسْلاَمُ دِينِي
wal-islāmu dīnī
And Islam is my religion
40
وَالْقُرْآنُ كِتَابِي
walqur-ānu kitābī
And the Quran is my Book
41
وَالْكَعْبَةُ قِبْلَتِي
walka`batu qiblatī
And the Ka'bah is my Qibla
42
وَأَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِيْ طَالِبٍ إِمَامِي
wa-amīrul mu-minīna `aliyyubnu abī ṭālibin imāmī
And the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib is my Imam
43
وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمُجْتَبَىٰ إِمَامِي
walḥasanubnu `aliyyinil mujtabā imāmī
And Hasan ibn Ali, the Chosen One, is my Imam
44
وَالْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الشَّهِيدُ بِكَرْبَلاَءَ إِمَامِي
walḥusaynubnu `aliyyinsh shahīdu bikar-balā-a imāmī
And Husayn ibn Ali, the Martyr of Karbala, is my Imam
45
وَعَلِيٌّ زَيْنُ الْعَابِدِيْنَ إِمَامِي
wa`aliyyun zaynul `ābidīna imāmī
And Ali, the Adornment of the Worshippers, is my Imam
46
وَمُحَمَّدٌ بَاقِرُ عِلْمِ النَّبِيِينَ إِمَامِي
wamuḥammadun bāqiru `ilmin nabiyīna imāmī
And Muhammad, the Splitter of the Knowledge of the Prophets, is my Imam
47
وَجَعْفَرٌ الصَّادِقُ إِمَامِي
waja`faruniṣ ṣādiqu imāmī
And Ja'far, the Truthful, is my Imam
48
وَمُوْسَى الْكَاظِمُ إِمَامِي
wamūsal kāẓimu imāmī
And Musa, the Restrainer (of Anger), is my Imam
49
وَعَلِيٌّ الرِّضَا إِمَامِي
wa`aliyyunir riḍā imāmī
And Ali, the Pleasing, is my Imam
50
وَمُحَمَّدٌ الْجَوَادُ إِمَامِي
wamuḥammadunil jawādu imāmī
And Muhammad, the Generous, is my Imam
51
وَعَلِيٌّ الْهَادِيْ إِمَامِي
wa`aliyyunil hādī imāmī
And Ali, the Guide, is my Imam
52
وَالْحَسَنُ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ إِمَامِي
walḥasanul `askariyyu imāmī
And Hasan, the Military Leader, is my Imam
53
وَالْحُجَّةُ الْمُنْتَظَرُ إِمَامِي
walḥujjatul muntaẓaru imāmī
And the Proof, the Awaited One, is my Imam
54
هٰؤُلاَءِ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ أَئِمَّتِي
hā-ulā-i ṣalawātullāhi `alayhim ajma`īna a-immatī
These, may Allah's blessings be upon them all, are my Imams
55
وَسَادَتِيْ وَقَادَتِيْ وَشُفَعَائِي
wasādatī waqādatī washufa`ā-ī
And my masters and my leaders and my intercessors
56
بِهِمْ أَتَوَلَّىٰ
bihim atawallā
I am loyal to them
57
وَمِنْ أَعْدَائِهِمْ أَتَبَرَّأُ
wamin a`dā-ihim atabarra-u
And I disavow their enemies
58
فِيْ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ
fid dunyā wal-ākhirah
In this world and the hereafter
59
ثُمَّ اِعْلَمْ يَا اِبْنَ
thumma i`lam ya ___ ibn
Be it known to you, O [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so],
60
أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى نِعْمَ الرَّبُّ
annallāha tabāraka wata`ālā ni`mar rabb
That Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, is the best Lord
61
وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ نِعْمَ الرَّسُولُ
wa-anna muḥammadan ṣallallāhu `alayhi wa ālihi ni`mar rasūl
And that Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, is the best Messenger
62
وَأَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِيْ طَالِبٍ
wa-anna amīral mu-minīna `aliyyabna abī ṭālib
And that the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib
63
وَأَوْلاَدَهُ الْاَئِمَّةَ الْاَحَدَ عَشَرَ نِعْمَ الْاَئِمَّةُ
wa-awlādahul a-immatal aḥada `ashara ni`mal a-immah
And his children, the eleven Imams, are the best Imams
64
وَأَنَّ مَا جَاءَ بِهِ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ حَقٌّ
wa-anna mā jā-a bihi muḥammadun ṣallallāhu `alayhi wa ālihi ḥaqq
And what Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, brought is truth
65
وَأَنَّ الْمَوْتَ حَقٌّ
wa-annal mawta ḥaqq
And that death is truth
66
وَسُؤَالَ مُنْكَرٍ وَنَكِيرٍ فِيْ الْقَبْرِ حَقٌّ
wasu-āla munkarin wanakīrin fil qabri ḥaqq
And the questioning by Munkar and Nakir in the grave is truth
67
وَالْبَعْثَ حَقٌّ
walba`tha ḥaqq
And resurrection is truth
68
وَالنُّشُورَ حَقٌّ
wan nushūra ḥaqq
And revival is truth
69
وَالصِّرَاطَ حَقٌّ
waṣ ṣirāṭa ḥaqq
And the path (Sirat) is truth
70
وَالْمِيزَانَ حَقٌّ
walmīzāna ḥaqq
And the scale is truth
71
وَتَطَايُرَ الْكُتُبِ حَقٌّ
wataṭāyural kutubi ḥaqq
And the distribution of the books is truth
72
وَالْجَنَّةَ حَقٌّ
waljannata ḥaqq
And Paradise is truth
73
وَالنَّارَ حَقٌّ
wan nāra ḥaqq
And Hellfire is truth
74
وَأَنَّ السَّاعَةَ آتِيَةٌ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا
wa-annas sā`ata-ātiyatun lā rayba fīhā
And that the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it
75
وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ مَنْ فِيْ الْقُبُورِ
wa-annallāha yab`athu man fil qubūr
And that Allah will resurrect those in the graves
Then, the prompter should ask:
76
أَفَهِمْتَ يَا
afahimta yā ____
Do you understand, O [so-and-so]?
According to a reported tradition, when a dead person is addressed these words, he answers, “Yes, I understand.” The prompter should then say these words:
77
ثَبَّتَكَ اللَّهُ بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ
thabbatakallāhu bil qawlith thābit
May Allah keep you firm with the established word
78
هَدَاكَ اللَّهُ إِلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ
hadākallāhu ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm
May Allah guide you to the straight path
79
عَرَّفَ اللَّهُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ أَوْلِيَائِكَ
`arrafallāhu baynaka wabayna awliyā-ik
May Allah bring about recognition between you and your guardians
80
فِيْ مُسْتَقَرٍّ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ
fī mustaqarrin min raḥmatih
In a place of His mercy
81
اَللَّهُمَّ جَافِ الْاَرْضَ عَنْ جَنْبَيْهِ
allāhumma jāfil ar-ḍa `an janbayh
O Allah, make the earth gentle on his sides
82
وَاصْعَدْ بِرُوحِهِ إِلَيْكَ
waṣ`ad birūḥihi ilayk
And raise his soul up to You
83
وَلَقِّهِ مِنْكَ بُرْهَانًا
walaqqihi minka bur-hānā
And grant him from You a clear proof
84
اَللَّهُمَّ عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ
allāhumma `afwaka `afwak
O Allah, Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness
